Famous people you have met. What were they like? Did any of them play for City? Famous people your mates have met.

Recommended Posts

Met a fair few. Chatted to Englebert seems a nice guy. Sat drinking till about 4am with a few famous bands in the early seventies, The Sweet, Hot Chocolate, Wizard and he who should not be named. Initials G G.

Met Matt Elliott several times as he used to frequent my local.

Dean Richards and several tigers players also been in there for a drink.

Most famous other than Englebert though has to be when I sat at a bar drinking with none other with Michael Caine, he is a really cool guy.

And not a lot of people know that

About this time umpty dumpty years ago, I came home late from work and pulled into Sileby Tesco car park in the dark. The car next to me was a black merc I think.

I was going to buy some fags. One bloke walked to the shop and another just stood there.

When I opened my car door I did a double take and said " aye up Sven, are you lost?"

He said " I turn on your lights".

I think he must have meant the Rothley Christmas lights and Sileby was the nearest open shop at that time.

I just walked passed and got my fags smiling to myself.

I'll always remember though.

Bet no one can beat this: had a chat with Ritchie Wellens after leaving the club while he was in the dugout at the Doncaster promotion game. Seemed like a decent guy.

Also met Alan Shearer when I was younger. My dad stayed well away from him, which I found out later was because of his stamp on Lennon in 98...

Norman Wisdom - my girlfriend was hugging him on the steps to his coach so he said "she's coming with me to Scarborough" (next show). I grabbed her arm, "No Norman, she's staying with me". Several minutes later we were still going with this tug of war both crying with laughter, mid way through I thought "**** I'm in a Norman Wisdom routine and I'm making HIM laugh". Lovely sweet man, same offstage as onstage.

Lineker was my guest for Christmas dinner at Hazel Street School. Ian Wilson & Bobby Smith presented me with a medal for a 3 legged football tournament.

Worked with the coaches and squad at the end of the Pleat era.

Spent a night in Branigans with Philpott who was a friend of a friend but didn't twig it was him until the next day.

On another occasion, Heskey, by then a Liverpool player, was outside Branigans and witnessed me getting a punch in the ribs from a passing random drunkard. He took time to come over and say "Are you alright mate" as I picked myself up. When I gave a police statement they asked if there was a witness. I said "no" because one call to the Sun and it would be "England star in nightclub brawl" !

Graham "Crossy" Cross was in my Dads Cricket team and I met him several times.

Knocked Garth Crooks over outside Filbert Street whilst he was being filmed (I was walking not driving!)

Flirted with Kim Wilde at Ainleys Record shop, made her laugh, then expanded the story a little bit to mates...

Toured with All About Eve and The Church meeting various 80's / 90's indie characters along the way. Including David Gedge of The Wedding Present.

Also met Adam Ant (very short), Marillion and a disappointing encounter at an after gig signing (a formal queue up one) with Kevin Rowland of Dexys,"What do you want?", "Er..I really enjoyed the show, it's been a great night, could you sign this please", "Haven't I signed it before?", I look at unsigned item, "maybe someone else had the same.....", he begrudgingly signed whilst chatting to someone next to him. The girl in front of me had put him in that state, she asked why he hadn't sung "Too Rye Aye"(she meant "Jackie Wilson Said") but he misunderstood and went into a state of paranoia, "She said I forgot the words...did I forget the words...hey Mick (Talbot - Keyboard player) did I forget the words, did I sing it wrong...." When you've waited 25 years to meet someone the reality can be disappointing. I still blame the girl though, it was well known he was in a post heroin addiction stage and not particularly stable.

At another signing Darth Vader crushed my hand in the basement of Dominoes Toy shop after I suggested he tried a pack of Tunes to help with his breathing.

Was it in the early to mid 80's that you met Darth Vader in Dominoes? I remember having my photo in the paper wearing a black balaclava :)

I know a local billionaire who has been my Father's friend since he was a member and then eventually president of the same golf club (80's or 90's can't remember which) in Leicestershire (Kirby Muxloe).

Briefly met Paul Dickov just before he purchased a house from my Father in Markfield when he played over here. Very down-to-earth and respectful.

Met Jamie Oliver whilst on a cruise holiday around the Greek Isles. Rather a reserved, surprisingly, character keeping to himself and away from public decking area etc.

Talked to Willie Thorne a few times in a pub in Leicester Forest East and Desford. Heard he's sadly bankrupt now? He can talk about anything for hours.

I met Emile Heskey once at anti-racism conference at Filbert Street, he signed my Match Magazine and was in a bit of a rush but was really cool. I met the Birch when my Dad's friend got us into a box for an FA Cup game against Bristol City, he was also lovely and signed copies of his book and chatted for a little while.

Just after Ranieri was appointed I walked past him near, ironically enough Leicester square in London, I wasn't sure that it was him but when I realised he had already walked a little far away so I shouted his name and he turned round and smiled. I met Robbie Savage after a BT Sport event, I knew he was gonna be there so I brought my 2000 Worthington Cup final program which he signed which was great.

Was on a train in the 90s - had bought a copy of the music Magazine Q to read on the journey....

...first article I read was "Top 10 Rock Stars that have been locked up in Jail" - Number One in the list was Hugh Cornwall Lead Singer with The Stranglers (who had been banged up in Nice, France apparently - hence the song "It's nice in Nice")......

.....anyway I glance up from the mag and who should be walking towards me up the carriage? Yes you guessed it Hugh Cornwall swinging a guitar case. Hugh sat a couple of rows down from me but facing me. On this occasion I chickened out of showing him the mag article !

Soft furnishings trade.

They say gambling addiction is difficult to defeat than alcohol and drug-related ones, and do feel for Willie as was a hobby that just obviously turned sour.

Just thought of a good one .

Met Eddie Edwards t at Gloucester Hotel Golf and dry ski way back -introduced himself as a plasterer and our only ski jumper looking for sponsors -we declined as he  was obviously destined for obscurity and would never be worth backing !

Ayrton Senna and two Miss Worlds (that was a bit greedy by him) at Donington Park.Eddie Jordan is top man as well really genuine just as he comes over on the TV

I can confirm that gambling is a very difficult addiction to deal with...

Mathew Horne saved me from someone trying to make me go into their shop in London.

Not met any city players other than Gillespie. Met quite a few Tigers players, including austin healey who was a massive twat to 6 year old me. Used to watch "Hole in the Wall" in the hopes that the wall would malfunction and crush him.

Saw Jamie XX coming out a girl's tent at Bestival one morning and gave him an approving nod.

Most of the 1993 Leicester team for my 18th Birthday (a girl well connected to the club had her 21st on the same date, so let me have a joint party). Iwan Roberts absolute Legend spent most of the night chatting to him (hey, I've got your drinks covered for the night don't go near that bar), Whitlow as grounded as they come, Joachim as you'd expect struggled to actually construct a sentence, Grayson unusually shy (odd, probably me), skippy again shy, Brian Little was very humble and an all round nice guy.  Matt Elliott met in Copenhagen off my face at 3am in a dive bar, again sound. Met celebs but they didn't play for Leicester, so can't be arsed to name drop.
