davieG Posted 26 October 2015 Posted 26 October 2015 Paul Merson has told Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday that Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy would keep Newcastle United, Sunderland and Aston Villa in the Premier League. Vardy has scored 10 goals already this season, and he currently leads the Premier League's goalscoring charts. The 28-year-old has been in scintaliting form, but Merson is worried that Vardy could look to leave the King Power Stadium in January. The former Arsenal midfielder predicts that teams like Newcastle, Sunderland and Villa, who are all in the bottom three at the moment, will be trying to sign Vardy in the new year - and he claims that he would be a great addition for any of the struggling sides. "They need to offer him a new deal," Merson said. "There's three big football teams in the bottom three and they would all take him - and he would get them out of trouble. "Why wouldn't he go to one of them? He would keep them up. Not because of his great skill, but because of his enthusiasm and work-rate. He would score goals. View image | gettyimages.com "I would love to play number 10 with him, I wouldn't even have to look. He's so willing. He's a dream, he's an absolute dream." Sunderland, Villa and Newcastle have all struggled for goals this term, and there is no question that Vardy would improve their forward ranks. The former Fleetwood Town has been in blistering form this campaign, and he is oozing with confidence whenever he gets a chance to go through on goal. Claudio Ranieri's men are in fifth place in the Premier League, and they will be determined to keep hold of Vardy for as long as possible.
EverybodyDannsNow Posted 26 October 2015 Posted 26 October 2015 "Why wouldn't he go to them?" I could think of a million reasons Merson. The blokes lost the plot
Gerard Posted 26 October 2015 Posted 26 October 2015 Clueless by Merson. I mean leaving to go to Newcastle or Villa is absurd but Sunderland I would argue that any player in the world who would join Newcastle or Villa is just as likely to join Leicester if given the option. Also I'd be interested in how much he thinks these clubs would have to pay to get Vardy. Ooh £8m is a lot of money for a club like Leicester to reject, FFS
Footballwipe Posted 26 October 2015 Posted 26 October 2015 Name me one player who has gone to Sunderland in recent seasons and done well. It's a graveyard of mediocre talent. Millions upon millions wasted. I'm sure Sam Allardyce has the right style of football ready for JV. If he gets a new contract and extension to 2019 or 2020 then he deserves it, as he does with his pay rise. I'm sure Mahrez's new deal secured him one so JV deserves his. If any bids came in like Mahrez the opening gambit would be £35-40m. I'd accept less if it (somehow) was a high profile foreign club but otherwise we don't need to sell to weaken the squad and strengthen a rival. It's probably all just easy BS of course but it's really annoying. Would it really be wise for him to go off to Spurs, Liverpool etc and risk not playing enough or suffering when he's on the brink of getting into what might be the only tournament squad he'll ever make? It's fantasy land all of it. Poch, Klopp, whoever can consider making all the bids they like, we've got to accept it. That's the most annoying thing I think with all this speculation, it's being written like any bid would be a fait accompli and they just need to snap their fingers and he's theirs.
EverybodyDannsNow Posted 26 October 2015 Posted 26 October 2015 To be honest those quotes from Merson are the most ridiculous quotes I've read from anyone, let alone someone who is paid to talk about football. The bloke has lost his head

hornyhollthefox123 Posted 26 October 2015 Posted 26 October 2015 He signed a 4 year deal in August 2014 on roughly £40k a week. Do we really need to offer a new one? Surely he knows how important he is to us and isn't going to demand a significantly larger amount than that! Not yet anyway, i hope.

If Plonker Merson is right and its teams like Sunderland and Villa who would take him then no, but if teams like Liverpool and Tottenham start to show an interest? His head could get turned.
lifted*fox Posted 26 October 2015 Posted 26 October 2015 You'd like to think he's sensible enough to realise he is the hero here and he could very quickly become the zero at a club like Spurs, Liverpool, etc. I suppose you have to wonder what his main driving goal is - I don't think it's money tbh. I think he's the kind of player who'd rather leave a legacy behind at a club than end up wasting away on someone's bench somewhere. A few years back he wouldn't have dreamed of being where he is now - I think he owes a lot to the club, the fans and the players around him and he'll know that. I don't have him down as the kind of player to risk his status, his chances at the Euros and his overall game for an extra few quid. Still, who knows.

lifted*fox Posted 26 October 2015 Posted 26 October 2015 £60k might be his agent's target and I think we'd pay it too. Would be worth every penny if it keeps him here. Jamie Vardy is the spirit of this team at the moment - he encompasses everything we strive to be - his tenacity, spirit and work-ethic are worth their weight in gold. Not even worth considering selling the guy to someone else.
biggs Posted 26 October 2015 Posted 26 October 2015 The grass is not always greener on the other side. A different style of play could turn everything around for Vardy......and for what it matters we're in 5th spot with only 4 teams above us playing the style he thrives on !!!

Our team is set up for Vardy to score goals, he has excellent conditions at Leicester to get the most out of his game. He's at his best when we counter and given a through ball with lots of space between the defenders and GK. If he went to another club he may find the opposition generally park the bus and he has to play in front of the opposition's whole team. It could easily turn into a bad move for him as he wouldn't be the focal point and his team wouldn't optimise his strengths. The grass isn't always greener and six months down the line could be pining for what he had at Leicester. Stay here and become a legend Jamie.

Guest Posted 26 October 2015 Posted 26 October 2015 That's the same Merson who said we'd go down last year because we had a nice ground. Stealing a living as a pundit
Thracian Posted 26 October 2015 Posted 26 October 2015 Merson must be stuck in a time warp. Vardy being tempted by someone like Real Madrid I could understand for all that I'd hope he'd resist the move. But Newcastle, Sunderland or Villa? All three could feature in an "All Our Yesterdays" video. I don't say they'll never come gain. But all three will need a big dose of footballing Viagra just to win this season's survival battle and then the sort of rebuild my ageing Peugeot needed the other month, after clocking past 320,000 miles! .

"Time warp" is the words in a nutshell. Merson obviously has no clue about modern football, long gone are the days when the likes of Villa or Newcastle can come and pick up Leicester's best player and Sunderland have never been in that position. Vardy has probably five good years left maximum and there is nothing to suggest that Villa, Newcastle or Sunderland can offer him anything more than Leicester can in that time period.
fuchsntf Posted 26 October 2015 Posted 26 October 2015 Merson must be white lining... 3 clubs mentioned, if they Vardy plus agent even thought of going down those lines, then I tell you in Gods name I would give up football. Vardy couldnt be that stupid Lets get this right among ourselves, the fans. Vardy is in the headlines, every nonsecle small time journalist, or depressed sunday paper reporter wants to jump on the band wagon, and be part of the slipstream that surrounds Vardy. You know what its not exciting, its quite pathetic. one reason I drop out and get lost in regular intervals.
Buzzell Posted 26 October 2015 Posted 26 October 2015 Merson has had a right mare there. Sunderland, Newcastle and ****ing Villa?! lol
Gerard Posted 26 October 2015 Posted 26 October 2015 Merson has had a right mare there. Sunderland, Newcastle and ****ing Villa?! lol I love to see him try and explain it in depth. How much do you think Leicester would sell Vardy for? How much do you think Villa, Newcastle or Sunderland would pay? Do you not think a better club would hijack it? Do you think Vardy would leave for a relegation threatened team? Use you're fecking brain Merson.
