Vassell retires at age 35

Without a club since 2012 so no big shock. I happened to like him whilst at Leicester under Sven so wish him all the best in his retirement at the grand old age of 35 (2 years younger than me!!)

Good luck to him. Liked him when he was here. Even if he wasn't really good enough.

He was good enough for the level we were at at the time which was an upper-mid table Championship side though. I was always surprised another Championship side didn't take him on after he left us.

He did well for us but I'm sure the last game he played was under Sven and after that we never saw him again.

Scored or set up a goal against Forest and scored a cracker against Nigels Hull away. Since then I thought he hadnt signed for anyone, maybe Indian Super League but he's not had a club at least 2 years surely? lol He had that music video up on Youtube tho, maybe he's gone full time on that

What was the main reason he never found another club following his departure at Leicester?

I know he had been injured, but surely he would've had enough talent and will to continue for another two to three seasons.

Did he simply never fully recover or was he spent?

He had/has a niggling knee issue.

Didn't he wreck his knee while he was here, and was out injured shortly before Sven's departure, and only came back toward the end of the season. Clearly wasn't Nige's man so he let him leave. Possibly never truly recovered from that knee problem.

That goal against Hull on New Years Day...

I always liked Darius when he was here, scored a few decent goals in his time at Leicester.

Was OK for us but was never going to be a prolific goal scorer. Was surprised he hasn't been able to find a club in over 3 years..  Unless he wanted a decent wage, must be a load of league 1 or league 2 teams who would have taken a chance on him. Weird. happy retirement!

A lot of people questioned when he was signed was he good enough?, but to be honest while he was he never really did anything wrong. When he did play his work rate was excellent. It's a shame when Pearson returned he didn't show any interest in him, should have a gave a few more games. Wonder what happened to him after he left Leicester?

I said at the time when we released him I was dissapointed because I thought he had another year in him at least here. Was a good player for us, no doubt about it. His goal away at Hull certainly livened up my News Years Day.

I’m sure he was a decent bloke and he had a good career before he joined us. But his signing was indicative of everything that was wrong with us under Sven.

An ex-England player who was well past his best by the time we signed him.

He was favoured over Matty Fryatt simply because of his reputation. A decision that looked ever odder as Fryatt went on to play in the Premiership with Hull,  whilst Vassell just dribbled the last few years of his career in the football wilderness.

Makes me shudder to think back to those days…!
