Buzzell Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 He's finished in an England shirt. Time to move forward.
Tielemans63 Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 The thing is boys, this is only going to get worse not better. Too many people making far too much money from the Premier League gravy train - administrators and players. They pay lip service to international football but I'm absolutely convinced that the majority of England players see internationals as a bit of inconvenience to their club career- if they cared half as much as they claim the do then they'd have been way more urgent and way more aggressive yesterday. If the people who run the game really did give a shit about England they'd have made serious moves to correct a problem that's been festering for 20 years now but they don't want to tarnish the holy grail of the Premier League. It's been painfully obvious for at least 15 years that the number of English players in the top flight is dwindling at an alarming rate but nothing has been done. Absolutely jack shit and that is appalling. Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
Guest Col city fan Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 I have heard that Phil Jones is a natural leader. Genuine, not bs Trouble is, he ain't that good. He's not as good as many thought he'd be tbf.
Munshi Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 Smalling anyone? If only Morgan hadn't chosen Jamaica a couple of years back id have him up there for England captain right now
StanSP Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 No-one in the squad stands out to be captain. Barely any real leaders. Look at other national teams. Influential characters who don't buckle when things get a bit tough. They have some steel about them, some charisma, some assertiveness and knowing when to step up to the plate to spur their team on. That attitude to wear their heart on the sleeve and literally give all they have for their nation. They don't buckle. Rooney may have the attitude internally but he doesn't show it on the pitch (moaning and shouting angrily at anyone on the pitch doesn't mean he has any of those qualities). Italy - Buffon France - Lloris Germany - Neuer (?) Spain - Ramos Croatia - Srna Brazil - Dani Alves Portugal - Ronaldo Uruguay - Godin Argentina - Messi I can't think of any English players who have the capability to be a successful leader right now.
Dan Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 We've got to move on from Rooney now. I'm surprised he's only 30 but he's so far past-it now. At the absolute least we need to knock him down a peg or two.
Buzzell Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 You just know someone like Henderson will become the next captain
Dan Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 Dier I'm unsure on. Maybe. There's no-one ideal really. Chris Smalling might actually be our best shout. How on earth has it come to that? I suppose in fairness Smalling didn't have that bad a tournament.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 I have heard that Phil Jones is a natural leader. Genuine, not bs Trouble is, he ain't that good. He's not as good as many thought he'd be tbf. I actually feel a bit sorry for Phil Jones, somewhere in my head still thinks he'd be one of the first names on the teamsheet at centre half if he'd have just been played there regularly for his club. Made the wrong move, in hindsight.
BenTheFox Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 I think Rooney should be moved on now. We need to start building the team around someone else. As for a new England captain. Who knows? Chris Smalling, maybe? Yikes...
AyewJoking Posted 29 June 2016 Posted 29 June 2016 Hart needs dropping altogether to see if he can recapture the form at club level that got him where he is now. what about Dier? he is young but does he have the type of character needed for captain? Anyway, im afraid Rooney will stay as captain with Cahill vice. maybe Wilshere for a future captain in the unlikely event he stays fit??
Finnegan Posted 29 June 2016 Posted 29 June 2016 @@Vacamion had it right. Don't pick a captain. Where's the rule that says you NEED to have a permanent squad captain? Just appoint a senior player on a game by game basis.

I read/saw something that said Mourinho wanted Jones to be United's John Terry, and that he can be the leader in the defence. Really hope this is true, as he could be a candidate and we could have 3 defenders from the same team in Jones, Smalling and Shaw. That would be positive, hope it comes to fruition !

Phil Jones career has been hampered by his versaltilty and injury. What he needs is a manager that believes in him and a good run without injury and he could become a decent CB. He should be kept far away from RB and CM as possible though.
TiffToff88 Posted 29 June 2016 Posted 29 June 2016 I always found the idea of needing a captain on the pitch to be a bit pointless really. what does being a captain actually add to a game? surely the only difference it makes is that he's the person who takes part in the coin toss? Why does there need to be one person on the pitch wearing an armband? all it does is inflate the ego of that one player and make him think he's indispensable. If a team has enough leaders on the pitch anyway there's no need for a captain at all. Maybe there needs to be a Rugby inspired rule where the only person on the pitch who can interact with the referee is the captain. that would give more meaning to the role and reduce abuse of officials.
Captain... Posted 29 June 2016 Posted 29 June 2016 To pick a captain you need someone who is going to start every game for the next few years, I really can't think of any England player that deserves their place on performances in an England shirt. On this tournament's performances none of them deserve to even start the next game, I include Vardy in this. All the blame lies on the management though. We have been clueless, shapeless, directionless for years, apart from the second half against Germany and arguably the second half against Wales. Having the odd good half of football makes it more frustrating. First we need the management sorted, and what kind of manager we get dictates the captain. I expect we will get a manager that will go back to basics and pick a team and formation that can defend, if we can't find a good centre back pairing and full backs that can defend we go 3 at the back. Russia: 2 shots on target 1 goal Wales: 2 shots on target 1 goal Slovakia: 2 shots on target 0 goals Iceland: 5 shots on target 2 goals All those goals came from errors, we need defenders that can defend and someone in there that can organise them, Cahill probably should be captain and he should have had experience to call upon, Jagielka should have been there. He is not the best defender in the world, but he has been there, done it and knows how to defend and defend simply and effectively. Look at Morgan and Huth, or Gareth Mcauley for NI or the Italian back line. Experience is so important and we went with very little of it, it doesn't help that we have so few central defenders playing regularly in the top flight, and that includes Cahill who lost his place this season, but it is just... It is just all shit really, we have defenders that can't defend and we ask them to attack, attackers that can't score and we ask them to defend, midfielders who can't create and we had the arrogance to make a raft of changes against Slovakia and refuse to pick players that can actually do the job they are being asked to do. How we can make any of that shower captain I don't know.
purpleronnie Posted 29 June 2016 Posted 29 June 2016 I don't see Rooney as a leader he doesn't command that role at all. One of the many reasons we failed was lack of leadership on the pitch especially after we went 2-1 down.
Sol thewall Bamba Posted 29 June 2016 Posted 29 June 2016 There's not one leader in that team. Previously I would have been OK with Cahill but after seeing what a awful job he did when Rooney came off, he can get in the bin as well. Best part of Roy going is we might see the back of Milner as well.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 29 June 2016 Posted 29 June 2016 I'm not sure why anyone needs to be lead when playing football for club or country. Or why you even need a captain. There should be 11 of them on the pitch. Far too much emphasis is placed on having one
BlueTillIDie Posted 29 June 2016 Author Posted 29 June 2016 Grasping at straws and the best of a bad bunch i am leaning towards Dier, seems to have a good temprament and plays in the middle of the park.
nettle Posted 30 June 2016 Posted 30 June 2016 Definitely don't want Dier as captain he comes across in interviews as arrogant and I think he's over rated, not a patch on Drinky.
