I find the saddest thing about it the way UEFA probably don't even think he had a bad game. He's got previous for it, and yet has refereed semi finals in the past.

There's absolutely no defence for it. No-one can possibly enjoy that.

Gavin Ward, Jon Moss. All is forgiven.

Fuchs what now? And Amartey's "wild slide tackle" won the ball, but accidentally caught a guy in the head cos he was almost on the floor.

You do do know that a player can be given a foul for recklessness and endangering his opponent after winning the ball, right?

Maybe you two would enjoy the rugby a little more.

I thought the ref had a very good game.  He was strict but fair.  And he used the advantage rule very well.  Even to the point of waiting quite some time to bring the play back when no advantage ultimately occurred.  It's too easy to blame the ref for free-kicks and bookings and stoppages.  If the players step over the mark and commit fouls it's not the refs fault.

It's not the refs job to entertain, it's the players.  It's the refs job to enforce the rules.

What about if the wind blows and they go down like the've been hit by a train?

He's one of the top refs in Europe as he is often given finals and big games. He was poor but tbf both sides gave away so many clumsy fouls. The game was stop start in part due to the clumsiness of both teams. Ref didn't help much mind you.

And you do know that what you refer to as "field" hockey is just hockey. It came first and ice hockey is the variant. But of course the U.S. is the only country in the world and what the rest of the world calls stuff... football/soccer... baseball/crappy-wave-bat-miss... basketball/male netball... is irrelevant.

He was terrible. You could tell it got to a point where he stopped handing out yellow cards because he couldn't remember who he'd booked already.

Based on the way he refereed the game, Slimani definitely should have gone for a late challenge he made while on a booking.

He lost complete control and set an awful precedent at the start of the game and followed through with it. Porto were falling over at any opportunity and he fell for it at every opportunity.

I can't imagine he's refereed many games where the team likes to hassle people as much as we do though.

As I say unfortunately I couldn't go last night so had the benefit of watching replays etc on tv but Slimani certainly shouldn't have been sent off!

It was a hideous dive by Layun at the end of the first half. And apart from Layun diving again in the second half on the halfway line which the ref gave he got most others correct. It may have been scrappy but Huth and Wes need to smarten up. They were pushing / elbowing players who need no excuse to exaggerate contact but still the majority of them were fouls..

Very strange performance from the ref, he was all over the place. We've seen some bad ones over the years, but that really took me back to Atletico at Filbert Street- the occasion, the atmosphere, the floodlights, the feeling that winning the game was out of our control.

I'm so proud of our boys for playing how they did and grinding out the win in the circumstances. You could tell Porto were veterans of European competition. They knew how to manipulate the officials to turn the game in their favour, and credit to us for seeing it out.

Shite as the ref was the worry is the yellow cards. How many is it for a match ban. And am I right thinking they get wiped at the end of the group stage.

Anyone who's been to watch a match in Spain or Italy can expect this standard of bizarre officiating. Breathe a little too heavily on the opposition and they go down, instant free kick. Thank god we have the Premier League to look forward to.

The ref was picky but could have been a lot worse. Welcome to European football.  if you don't want to have free kicks awarded against you then keep your arms down. Both vardy and slimani were plain stupid - vardy has played at international level and slimani has plenty of European experience..

this is guy is one of uefa's best.  Prepare yourselves was for worse than him!

I assume they must have introduced the rule "player on floor equals a free kick" this week then, if we're assuming he enforced the rules properly.

So if this is European Football how come I've not seen other games where a ref has been so intent on being the centre of attention with his nit-picking approach, how many of those supposed fouls actually warranted a yellow card?.

On the plus side I think Porto's feigning tactics and the ref's finickiness actual affected Porto's play more than ours, at the start of the game before it became the norm I thought they where going to cut us apart with some slick inter and defence splitting passes but the constant stop / start restricted them.

I was, yes, but I don't count that frankly because I believe completely that that was fixed. I felt cheated. Gary Parker getting sent off for taking a quick free kick still sets me off ranting.

But this was something else entirely. This wasn't one man against Leicester. This was one man against the sport.

The thing that gets me is the one time he actually should of pulled a yellow card out for Danilo? When he scythed through Slimani, he completely bottled it because he was already on a yellowlol

He was utter shit.

Shit ref, I hope he never refs for us again. He forgot who was booked and who wasn't halfway through the second half so stopped showing cards

See plenty of games officiated like that in European football. You probably don't notice it as much when your team isn't involved.

I was more annoyed that the game calmed down in the last 30, i had money on each team to get 30, 40 and 50 booking points haha

There are not that many games with quite THAT many fouls, anywhere.

What did @MattP Say, 46 in 90? Ridic.

Andre Andre pulled off the worst tackle of the game on Drinkwater about 7 minutes in without a booking. Went straight through the back of him.

Yeh I thought the ref was very poor tonight. We slate the refs in the prem but give me any of them over these foreign idiots anytime. But Porto were pathetic for diving and cheating so they thoroughly deserved to get beat. Even better that Slim scored against them haha

I'm surprised people thought the ref did a great job.... he was terribly inconsistent!!!!! with his decisions. Bloody painful game to watch.

I know the sports well, and grew up playing the "ice" variant. You knew what the guy was saying but you couldn't help yourself and had to be a dick about it. Glad I was able to teach new a new football rule, though.

If you don't like the word "soccer," blame your own country for creating the word (which is a perfectly acceptable name for the sport, only relatively recently derided, and not just used in America).

Glad you have such strong opinions about the names of sports-- perhaps you can get everyone to call a bread roll whatever name you feel is most appropriate.
