Atletico Madrid (1997) - Sevilla (2017)

I can't help drawing comparisons between our 2nd Leg home tie against Sevilla to the one we had 20 years ago vs Atletico Madrid.

We were 2-1 down from the first leg as well.

We were certainly the better team in the 2nd leg only to be cheated by the French ref ,Remy Harrrel,....who never refereed another UEFA match again after his shambolic display at Filbert Street.

I remember the excitement of the build up of that night only to be completely  heartbroken at the end of the match and our European adventure. I hope lightning doesn’t strike twice.

What are your memories of the Atletico match?

Sending off of Garry Parker still ranks as the most horrendous refereeing decision I have seen.  I felt then that the ref had be sorted to make sure we lost the match.  Hope we never see anything like that again.

Didn't they have flares etc. Tim flowers said he could see but then they scored from thirty yards. I think that might have been red star actually

Parker got sent off for taking a free kick I remember that!

The look on Parker's shocked and disconsolate face as he headed towards the tunnel which matched mine.

It was the worst refereeing performance i have ever seen in 50 years of watching football. Leicester should have had at least 3 stonewall penalties for fouls on Muzzy. I thought at the time the ref had been got at and the intervening years have not changed my opinion. The fact that he never officiated at that level again spoke volumes

Seem to remember we should have had a couple of penalties for fouls on Muzzy Izzet but with that ref we were lucky to be allowed to kick off one of the halves. I hope his free spanish appartment has foundation problems and leaky pipes.

No, that was the home tie we played later against another team (name escapes me) under Taylor (we were in Europe on back of league cup win v Tranmere). They got a free kick in the opening minutes jnot much beyond the halfway line. It was thick smoke all the way from there to our goal. Flowers had no chance to see the shot. Some criticized Taylor's nativity - he should have insisted the ref not allow the kick to be taken till the smoke had cleared.

In the earlier game v Athletico it was the worst travesty I've ever seen. We should have scored 6  (and had that many pens). I think an Athletico official was later convicted of bribery or some similar financial misdemeanor. Parker had a v soft initial booking. His second was for taking a  freekick before the whistle had been blown! I've never seen that again in 60 years of watching footy.

Not sure I've even been so pissed off at a match as that one. Seen some inept reffing over the years, but that was just corrupt.

I know it's daft given all that's happened since, but I still can't bring myself to watch that clip!

The injustice still rankles. Guess we'll just have to make up for that next week.

The Atletico & Red Star games were all rather bad tempered affairs TBH.

I felt completely let down by the whole European experience at the time.

And that home tie against Atletico?

In O'Neills words: "a game that we couldn't win"

I was hoping that things would be a lot more pleasant this time around - and so far it has been.

Long may it continue....

I remember sitting in restricted view seats, with tickets we'd had to beg at the club for because they'd been put on sale and all sold out while we were in Madrid for the away fixture.

I remember the atmosphere being like nothing I'd ever experienced before at Filbert Street, and the injustice I felt afterwards was enough to still make me cross to this day.

Absolutely buzzing for next week, it really can't come soon enough.

Have to make sure we are on the ref as much as the Spanish teams are when Sevilla come to town.

To be fair their conduct was superb in the first leg aided by a great ref.
