Vardinio'sCat Posted 1 May 2017 Posted 1 May 2017 Simpson is a clever defender, as he was last year, I don't see much of a change. It has to be Benny for me, although I barely saw him last year. He has been an important part of our revival, and has covered for Morgan far better than I expected.
Wymsey Posted 1 May 2017 Posted 1 May 2017 Agree about Simpson, rarely gets caught out of position now. He's more of an improvement to Benalouane as Simpson had often been criticised about going too far up many times last season, whilst with Benalouane he's just not been considered by Ranieri at all really. Most disappointed with Musa, though some players flourish during their second season, so therefore willing to give him a bit more time for him to show he's useful and effective.
Detroit Blues Posted 1 May 2017 Posted 1 May 2017 I think Simpson is more "underrated" than "improved." He was a steady defensively last season, but he has not developed any sort of offensive game (not that we necessarily need him to). I think for me, it has to be Albrighton. Last season he was great defensively because of his work rate, and he played some great crosses into the box, but he was always looking for that early pass into Vardy and defenders we're starting to figure it out. Last season I thought the writing was on the wall for Albrighton, and that Demarai Gray would have displaced him from the starting XI sometime this season, but it really goes to show the improvement Marc has made that we're actually debating benching Mahrez instead. Marc has added some quick passing and movement to his game, and he has even contributed a few key champions league goals. In the last 8 or so games since Shakespeare took over, Marc is playing about the best quality football that I've seen him play, I hope one day he'll get his chance at the international level.
Guest Col city fan Posted 1 May 2017 Posted 1 May 2017 How can Simpson be 'most improved? He was brilliant last season? And we won the title. Naff thread cos there ain't one
Chico1958 Posted 1 May 2017 Posted 1 May 2017 If we're really honest and I mean really honest should this post be: The most improved player since February ? Because I still remember the Swansea game and thread................. Fuchs, Simpson, Schmeicel got slaughtered In fact up until Liverpool apart from CL games they all came in for a bit of a hammering at one time or another. So my vote goes to Ndidi as the most improved player since last season as I didn't get to see him, until he came, he saw and he conquered. Other than that........... It's The Little French Guy who is now playing for the Champions Elect or Kramaric who will be play CL next year and scored 12 goals. By the way, if our players can achieve anything similar to what they achieved last season, next season I'll vote

StriderHiryu Posted 1 May 2017 Posted 1 May 2017 Kasper for me. He was really good and consistent last year, but this year he has become truly world class. I'd put him in the top 5 in Europe right now along with Buffon, Neuer, Obliak and De Gea. He has single handedly kept us in games this season, and that save versus West Ham was incredible.
AKCJ Posted 1 May 2017 Posted 1 May 2017 Kasper for me. Gone from a really good keeper to a genuinely brilliant one. I put him alongside anyone barring Neuer, Buffon and De Gea.
Lovejoy Posted 1 May 2017 Posted 1 May 2017 I wouldn't say Danny Simpson, thought he was genuinely excellent for us last season and in truth remained half decent when our other defenders forgot how to play football earlier this season. This is a bit left of field, but Marc Albrighton only contributed one goal and two assists in the whole of 2016. Could be a shout if not going for the obvious choice of #yb29.
Hammo Posted 1 May 2017 Posted 1 May 2017 Looking at this season as a whole - and not just post-Ranieri - not a single member of last season's title-winning team has played better in 2016/17. Only Kasper has more or less consistently maintained the same high standard. Several, alas, have been a lot worse.

Guest Danny Clender Posted 2 May 2017 Posted 2 May 2017 I'd say, in terms of overall improvement and throughout the season, Kasper Schmeichel. He's always been good, but good for us, and only now are the big teams genuinely considering him. At the end of last season, he was not in our targeted top 3 of leaving, this year he's number 1. Not saying that shows pure evidence, but his distribution, stopping, organisation and presence have all improved. Simpson is a contender, but I agree, he's been the most consistent. Benny in terms of places gained, i.e U23 outcast to first choice CB contender, that's not bad.

Even in the last year he's come on loads. It's hard to remember too many match-defining contributions from him last season (he was reliable when called upon) but this season he's either dug us out of trouble or turned a potential massacre into a not-too-heavy beating on several occasions. Absolutely mad to think that people (myself included) were ready for a change (or at least a rest) back in December 2014 when he got injured.
ozleicester Posted 2 May 2017 Posted 2 May 2017 Not sure that anyone has improved on last year (bloody hard to do to be honest). I would say that Fuchs, Kasper and Simpson have maintained last years high standard. The rest have not been better than last year.
Monsell1976 Posted 2 May 2017 Posted 2 May 2017 On the basis of playing the season of their life's last season, none have improved. A very inconsistent season from most, if not all. If the change hadn't have been made, and the introduction of nididi in Jan, this team was taking us down. Some players have gone backwards, Okazaki, king, Leo, gone backwards massive, and to a lesser extent drinkwater and mahrez.

There was even a thread called "Fuchs off"... Not that I paid much attention mind, he's the best left back we've had since.................... ever, really
Foxxed Posted 2 May 2017 Posted 2 May 2017 Danny and Marc for me, the players that worried me the most last season and who've worried me least this.

Man that feels so long ago. Between roughly then and before Seville away we were as bad as we'd ever been since I've been watching us (10 years). In that time our noticeably terrible performances/results Watford (A) - loss Boro (H) - draw if not for the referee Sunderland (A) - loss Porto (A) - loss Bournemouth (A) - loss Everton (H) - loss Boro (A) - loss Southampton (A) - loss Burnley (A) - loss Swansea (A) - loss Millwall (A) - loss To think anyone thought Ranieri deserved to keep his job. We took ONE point from those nine league fixtures. One. Genuinely embarrassingly shit.

He's done good this season and his reading of the game is much improved. Even his passing out of defence is the least hoofball like of the back line now matching Fuchs. Its a well done to Danny boy from me. I wouldn't say Danny Simpson has been our most improved player as I thought he was really good last season as well. He is massively underrated because he isn't like the modern day full back who bombs on and gets goals/assists. Defensively though he is really good and has a knack of reading danger and being in the right place at the right time. Even when our defence was a shambles he was the better out of the 4 of them. Plays with real passion and pride as well.

Naughton was good and Berner was solid - both in the Championship of course - but I'd go as far as saying Simpson is our best right back since Grayson (though I was a big fan of Sinclair) and I cannot recall a better left back than Fuchs in my time of following the club. Not looking to disagree with you as I also love Fuchs......but what about Pontus Kamark?!? http://www.gazettelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/pontus-kamark-day-marked-juninho-12247213
