Yet we've never played him there! If we see that as his position, why don't we give him a chance there? The club obviously sees him as a DR/MC utility player.

The club obviously sees him as a DR/MC utility player. For now sure. The more versatile you are the less likely you are to get a chance in your favored position. For example, Phil Jones at United had to switch from RB, CM and CB for years until he is now only playing at CB. Lets not forget he is our youngest senior CB by far, he will get his chance in the future as our CB's are aging.
