Callabinho Posted 5 July 2017 Posted 5 July 2017 It does confuse me though. He will arrive expecting to start week in week out....can't see Danny or N'didi being dropped....it's a potential Inler all over again....he's good, I just don't understand why we are signing him.....when we could go for a younger understudy?

I can most certainly see DD bring dropped. He was generally quite poor last season and if Iborra is technically superior and also hard working, then why not?

Obviously we need cover if he's off form but an on-song DD would still be my first choice.

Can't argue with that, I think DD at times looked like he was carrying something but I do agree he was nowhere near replicating his title winning form...I still think DD is excellent, but how much of that was Kante?
Babylon Posted 5 July 2017 Posted 5 July 2017 Anyone thinking this fella will be a starter in a 442 needs to rewatch our game with them. I really can't see it, he's far too rigid and lumbering from what I saw.
Arriba Los Zorros Posted 5 July 2017 Posted 5 July 2017 9 hours ago, Albert said: Absolutely. Pretty certain Mendy will be off as it just hasn't worked out and we've got a direct replacement in Matty James who I hope can prove his fitness in pre-season. Shakey has faith in him & He'll defo be involved if he stays fit. People seem to forget what a good player he is. Instrumental in our promotion season and was keeping Drinky out of the team in the great escape. Watched him a few times for the U21's last yr and he was a class above. Excellent news re Matty James. No idea why people keep on writing him off or making out he's not up to it when he's clearly good enough to start for us if fit.
Thracian Posted 5 July 2017 Posted 5 July 2017 A squad is a squad and every player in it should be capable of shining in Premiership football rather than going to Millwall and getting embarrassed. There was so little real competition for places last season as emphasised by how vulnerable we became when we had a few injuries and a lot of tired regulars at the end of last season. We simply hadn't got sufficient depth or quality within what we did have. Drinkwater was an example and may well have tried to play while coping with an injury judging by his form. Hopefully that won't be necessary this season because no-one will need to be playing while less than fully fit. As for our first choice selection, surely that depends on performance in pre-season and the system or systems our management decide upon. Right now we don't even know the squad let alone who's likely to be in our first choice team so speculation is pointless. Iborra could well be used as a utility player in any case and according to circumstances. He sounds extremely versatile. As for Drinkwater, I'd certainly be looking for better than he delivered for much of last season for all that I'd never question his effort and commitment. What I'm saying is that he's got his faults and is no less dropable than anyone else - or shouldn't be. We were lucky the year we won the title because we enjoyed the rare luxury of having very few injuries and a settled, almost constantly in-form team. Last season was more demanding with the Champions League fixtures on top of everything else - including AFCON - and we were stretched to the limits both in terms of ability. fitness and strategic options. Hopefully we'll learn from that and be stronger in every situation. although replacing Mahrez won't be easy and for the media to suggest Deeney is such a man is, whether he joins us or not, flippant nonsense. We badly need a genuine and durable replacement winger and perhaps even two. Gray is not the answer as yet and we need to retain our pace and threat on the break. .

I don't really see DD as a dynamic midfielder, when was the last time he was on song and even when he is it's very few and far between. I'd rather have Iborra consisitanly good throughout the season compared to Drinky who is on song every 5 games.

But he's a lot more dynamic than Iborra ... and he has a great understanding with Vardy. Iborras main strength is his physicality and presence on the pitch ... he is an excellent addition to the squad and will bring height (yes thats important) and leadership qualities .. as for exactly how he fits in I'll leave that to Mr Shakespeare. Great cover imo which at the moment is much more important than bringing in an 'understudy' ... last season we did not have anybody to really replace DD and he ended up gassed.

We'd all love Iborra to come and be consistently brilliant, fit in our system... but there are no guarantees of that.
lifted*fox Posted 5 July 2017 Posted 5 July 2017 Drinky is a solid professional who looked worse than he is last season due to carrying an injury. Back to full fitness and a good, sensible pre-season will see him back to his best. When he's at his best, he's excellent - can't quite believe how quickly people are willing to dismiss him from the squad.

Think we will see him start in games that we expect to have more of the ball. N'didi and DD play best when we're playing a counter attaking style but the minute that we have a bit more possession, they struggle. Iborra is better on the ball than our current CM pairing which will come in handy against teams in the bottom half of the table.

Callabinho suggested that DD's excellence in the previous season may have been enhanced by being alongside Kante, and there must be some truth in that, but we shouldn't forget his performances alongside Matty James in our promotion season, albeit in the Championship. Actually, that can be looked on optimistically for next season. A fully fit DD, and a rejuvenated James (which is not guaranteed but could well happen), in addition to Iborra and Ndidi as our prime contenders, would see us with a good amount of ability, flexibility and cover in our midfield next season.

In the same way I didn't see how Mendy fit into our style or how Slimani would work in our system. If I see an issue, then I'll flag it up. As @Finnegan said yesterday, we might be raising these issues. But you can guarantee it will be us who are defending the bloke when he's getting ripped to shreds after three months for not living up to expectations. I need to see much more of him to make a proper judgement, but from what I saw it's a concern.
Dames Posted 5 July 2017 Posted 5 July 2017 This reeks of Inler. Can see this being a waste of money and the chap will be back in Spain by January.
