lol

Couldn't see a thread already.

Anyone got anything good to say about this? On the face of it it's a ludicrous and completely undeserved appointment.

Seems he's had to get off social media sharpish as some ill-advised comments have already been dragged up.

Seems to have been lifted into this position by name only - has no previous experience in coaching, particularly women's football.

The FA's wondrous ways continue.

The Women's Sport Trust aren't overly happy with the appointment, either:

Quote

The vocal public response to the appointment of Phil Neville as the new manager of the England Women’s Team is indicative of just how invested the nation now is in the success of the Lionesses.

'The profile of the national team, and rapid growth of the women’s game in recent years, is largely down to the significant increased investment and focus on the women’s game by the FA which is to be welcomed.

'That said, the Women’s Sport Trust is disappointed at the apparent lack of transparency and process in the appointment of Phil Neville as the new Manager for the England Women’s Football Team.

'Our National Women’s Team deserve the very best coach available to fulfil their enormous potential and inspire millions of men and women.'

'To see a high profile, former professional footballer virtually parachuted in to such a significant role in football without the level of experience required, undermines the coaching pathway and will be a blow to hundreds of football coaches, both male and female, currently working towards their badges at all levels.

'Despite the huge growth in the women’s game in recent years, this appointment has also highlighted that we still don’t have enough female coaches at the highest level.

'We are also saddened by Phil Neville’s historical tweets and the lack of comment about this from the FA. In the age of MeToo and TimesUp, all individuals and organisations must be more aware of past sexist behaviour and respond to it appropriately.

'The strangest silver lining to this matter is that the population now seem to care about who is appointed manager of our women’s national team – something that reflect rising profile and value of women’s sport.'

According to Sky's Debate programme last night they were reporting that the FA spoke to a number of female coaches and they were not interested and those that expressed an interest didn't have the required skills etc unlike Phil Neville of course :P

Yep, I heard from someone supposedly with links to the women's team (on TalkSport, but sounded fairly legit) that basically no-one with the qualifications and any experience applied for the job, and Neville basically got the job by default

First move was to say he's looking forward to 'working with the girls' :wes:

Cracking start... wouldn't think it would be that difficult to say Women would you!

Imho..A massive fauxpas in not getting a woman on board

His tenure could last as little as Allardyce's did, with those tweets now revealed..

Trust may well become an issue, already.

Let's be honest, the first time he upsets a player, they're going to come out and accuse him of sexism.

He may as well not bother.

Exactly my thoughts, wouldn't go near that lot in the dressing room, more hassle than it's worth.

The only plus for him is he doesn't have a career, any public respect, a managerial reputation or any sort of self-esteem to destroy anyway.

If anything he should have said 'players', being an (allegedly) serious job - but a lot of managers would refer to their male players as 'the lads'. So not really an issue.

'Result makes it even harder for Leicester'

Sevilla 2-1 Leicester

Phil Neville

Former Manchester United defender on Radio 5live

You saw the difference in class and ability between the two sides. Leicester have made it even harder for themselves with this result. Fans were expecting to lose 4-0 and now they're almost dreaming of getting to the quarter-finals and that's how much this result means to them. Sevilla played the second half in second gear and Leicester still have to face one of the best teams in La Liga.

This is the level of insight the women's team can expect.

A good appointment in my opinion.

A man so ugly that not even the most desperate lady footballer could possibly have romantic inclinations for him, thus enabling our Lady players to concentrate solely on their football?

This is why no woman wanted to take on the job - according to the FA's director of women's football, Baroness Sue Campbell:

Quote

"We actually looked at 147 candidates across 30 countries. I'm not going to name names but you could say any name in the women's game and I could tell you we spent quality time talking to those people," she added.

"Many of them were interested in the role but they were not willing to put themselves into this very difficult - as they saw it - and challenging role.

"Moving your family halfway round the world and then being subjected to what they thought might be massive intrusion into their lives was a risk they were not wiling to take, and I respect that."

So, the limelight was the decisive factor for women to decline the role?

Something doesn't add up here... Bit too simplistic. I mean, one, two, three women can feel the same - but all or at least the majority? No way.

Probably has something to do with the FA having a bad reputation at the moment.

No idea how Neville got this gig...what experience does he have of the Women's game? Should have gone to Mo Marley or a WSL coach.

The England Ladies only make headlines for negative reasons and when they do it's never actually about their football. I don't blame anyone for not wanting to take the managerial role. Of course it sounds like a great team to manage, they're the third best team in the world! But that's just football, which isn't the whole equation. What I find funny is when I heard Phil's interview on 5Live about the "type of job he was looking for", I thought he sounded like he wanted to lead a program that would get the results almost despite him. And since then he's been appointed and that tweet came out. And the bombshell that there were 147 candidates. It sounds like he took the job no one else would. That's crazy. I don't think many of those 147 are reading about the latest negative press around the Ladies this week thinking they made the wrong choice turning it down or missing out on the job.

The title of this thread would make for a hilarious sequel to Mike Bassett: England Manager.
