Leicester City in talks with FA to host England game

The King Power Stadium could be the venue for England's clash with Switzerland

 

Leicester City are in talks with the FA over the possibility of the King Power Stadium hosting the England international against Switzerland in September.

City are in very early negotiations and it is yet to be agreed, but if the King Power Stadium was chosen as the venue it would be another coup for the club.

 

The King Power Stadium was used recently to host games in the Rugby World Cup, and City have shown their ambition by also announcing plans to build a new state-of-the-art training ground in Charnwood as well as exploring ideas on how to expand the stadium.

Attracting a high-profile England game would further raise the profile of the city and the stadium.

The King Power Stadium has been used to host a senior England game before, when Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side entertained Serbia & Montenegro in 2003, and it has also hosted internationals between Brazil and Jamaica, also in 2003, and Jamaica versus Ghana in 2006.

 

The last time the stadium was used for international football was when England under-21s beat Montenegro in 2007.

Gareth Southgate’s men are already set to take on Costa Rica in a World Cup warm-up match at Leeds United’s Elland Road ground on June 7 and the FA are exploring opportunities to take the England team around the country again after the success of playing at different locations around the country while Wembley was being rebuilt.

Joe Cole crowned an impressive appearance as a substitute with England's winner against Serbia & Montenegro at Leicester.

Cole - who had been demoted to under-21 duty by Sven-Goran Eriksson in recent months - sent a message to the England coach ahead of the Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia next Wednesday.

Steven Gerrard gave England the lead on a night of more experimentation by Eriksson, but Nenad Jestrovic equalised on the stroke of half-time.

And as the game looked to be heading for a draw, Cole fired home a powerful 20-yard free-kick that carried the trademark of absent captain David Beckham.

 

It made for a satisfactory night for England, with the crowd inside the Walkers Stadium also behaving impeccably.

 

KEY MOMENTS
35 mins: Steven Gerrard puts England in front.
45 mins: Nenad Jestrovic heads Serbia & Montenegro level.
82 mins: Joe Cole fires home England's winner from a free-kick.
England coach Eriksson gave Emile Heskey the nod in attack, with Everton's teenager Rooney kept on the bench.

And it was a low-key first 45 minutes, with England in control without imposing full authority on Serbia & Montenegro.

 

Liverpool's Gerrard was England's best performer in the early exchanges, and he was rewarded with the opening goal 10 minutes before the interval.

Gerrard was instrumental in creating and finishing the goal, driving forward to exchange passes with Michael Owen before sliding home a good finish from ten yards.

 

But just as England looked set to take an advantage into the half-time interval, a moment of defensive carelessness gave the visitors an equaliser.

 

Zvonomir Vukic's corner found Jestrovic unmarked and he headed home via Ashley Cole's boot to restore equality.

Eriksson made five changes before the start of the second half, with Ashley Cole, Gerrard, Owen, Gareth Southgate and Paul Scholes all coming off.

They were replaced by Rooney, debutant John Terry, Jermaine Jenas, Wayne Bridge, Owen Hargreaves and Joe Cole.

Serbia & Montenegro also made a host of changes and it made for a disjointed and colourless second half.

Rooney was involved in a couple of hefty challenges, and Cole brought the best out of substitute goalkeeper Dragan Zilic with a powerful run.

And Cole made his mark even more when he put England ahead with eight minutes remaining, firing a 20-yard free-kick past Zilic.

Zilic then saved brilliantly from Rooney in injury-time as England ended the game well in command to make it a satisfying night for Eriksson.

Because people have been begging for a tour around the grounds for Friendlies


And because as much as they say '60K attendance' the last we friendlies haven't been far above 40-45k

And probably due to the fact we have nicer, more recently updated facilities..... oh and money.... mostly money... that'll be why

This would be good for the club and the city.

 

If nothing else, recent international football would hold us in good stead to be one of the host cities on the next World Cup/Euros bid.

Fvcking hell are people really grousing about this on here. Such an FT thing to do. Get the cvnts out of London and playing in as many provincial backwaters as possible, I say. Great stuff.

I guess we will be paying loads of dosh to stage it

 

the problem the FA have is that if England have a decent World Cup then the supporters will moan that 32k doesn’t give them the opportunity to say thank you. On the flip side, they may be better off at anstey nomads ........

It was well worth it for us to see the USMNT here in the Gold Cup last summer.  But that was a rarity, especially in a non-soccer city.  Usually I would have to travel over 300 miles just for a friendly.

 

How big a deal is it to get a friendly in your home ground?  You guys can drive to London faster than I can drive to Columbus, much less Chicago.

The attendances are fairly high because the practically give a lot of tickets away

I'd be delighted for an England game to be held at the KP because it's impractical for me to go to London to watch them.

 

Of course I'd go and can imagine it would sell out easily.  Don't see how you can moan its win win for us lol

Will be England fans and England Fans Travel Club first I imagine then anything left goes to public.
