I can remember as a kid a pop van going down our street once every week. If you bought a bottle of pop from him and you gave him back the empty glass bottle back he’d give you £0.10p off your next bottle.

Was gonna say Corona but I'm several replies too late

Pop isn't that common a phrase here anymore, but everyone knows what you mean if you call it that

Usually "fizzy drink", or "soft drink" (formal)

Calling every fizzy drink a "coke" would piss me off. Like how Mancunians call all sweets (candy) a toffee, even if it's not made of toffee, or not toffee flavour.

I remember sweets being called tuffies. Nothing to do with toffee but no idea of the origin.

I'm sitting here, drinking Vimto, thinking how underrated it is. Dandelion and Burdock is another old fashioned treat. I like Cola but which one is best?

How did I miss this thread?  The answer is, of course, Dr Pepper.  X

As an Englishman who moved to Scotland I have fallen foul of such semantics.  In the first week of my new job when I first moved here I was asked to get some "juice" from the shop for a colleague.  I returned with some orange juice.  Little did I know "juice" not only meant "fizzy drink" but that in 99% of occasions it pretty much just means Irn Bru.  Obviously I was pointed and laughed at which was fair enough.  X

It must be something to do with toffee, surely. Not sure if you're joking.

Anyway, my favourite is root beer. It's not for everyone, and it does vary a lot in quality. It's also pretty hard to find. Some bigger Sainsbury's and Asdas do a decent one in the world foods aisle by Tropical Sun. The best one I've had is the Soda Folk one they serve at Grillstock in Leicester. It's got maple syrup in it. Fuching gorgeous.

Other contenders are Dr Pepper, normal Coke, Cherry Coke, Vanilla Coke, Ginger Beer, Fanta Fruit Twist, Rubicon Lychee, Irn Bru and Orangina.

Haven't seen Orangina in shops for a long time, though. Can you still get it?

Who remembers Tab Clear? Early 90s, I think. It was just Coke with no colour. I think it was ended because it caused cancer.

Anyone remember Witch's Brew? Heard someone mention it. I think it's before my time. Maybe early 80s?

All diet/zero/max/no added sugar drinks can get straight in the bin. They all taste like washing up liquid to me and go flat very quickly. I'm a bit worried that they'll all that will be available in the future. Coke released new flavours recently, but only in no added sugar form, and I've noticed my local Tesco very rarely, if at all, stock the proper versions of their own brand stuff. They did a decent ginger beer for pennies, but now they only ever have the shite diet version.

I met someone from Derbyshire who called them that, but never anyone from here.

Whatever happened to Shandy? Had a look for some cans to put in the fridge during the really hot spell a few weeks back, but couldn't find any of the smaller supermarkets in Leicester selling it. If I remember I'll have to have a look at the bigger places in Fosse Park to see if they still sell it. Or has the government banned it because it might encourage youngsters into a life of drink-sozzled oblivion.

Shandy Bass I think still pops up in off licenses but I don't think the big supermarkets stock it anymore. Just make your own, get some nice lemonade like R Whites and a smidge of lager, job done

Furnivals of Fleckney lemonade was a lovely thirst quenching pop.

Furnivals of Fleckney "Sola Cola" was sugared paint stripper.

Worked there in the summer holidays when I were a nipper. £8 a week & all the pop you could drink.
