Who is Luke Thomas? Lowdown on Leicester City's newest England international
Young left-back has been called up to England Under-18s

15:00, 9 NOV 2018UPDATED15:06, 9 NOV 2018

Young Leicester City defender Luke Thomas has been rewarded for his fine form with a maiden England Under-18s call-up.

The left-back has been named in a 20-man squad that will face the Netherlands, Republic of Ireland and Belgium in a mini-tournament in Murcia, Spain, this month.

The call-up is richly deserved for a player growing in prominence at City.

One of three nominees for City’s academy player of the season last year, missing out to eventual winner Conor Tee, Thomas has continued his progress with the under-18s this season.

He has played every game in the Under-18 Premier League, captaining City in recent weeks as they have risen to fourth in the South division.

Not content with just completing his defensive duties, Thomas has contributed in attack too, scoring three goals and setting up another in eight games.

Thomas made his debut for the under-23s last season and his displays this term have seen him feature more regularly for the development squad.

In midweek, Thomas enjoyed an excellent cameo in the Checkatrade Trophy against Rochdale.

Coming on with 35 minutes to go, Thomas helped City level proceedings at 2-2 and then kept the pressure on the League One side, whipping in several dangerous crosses from the left flank.

In the shoot-out, he stepped up and confidently tucked away his penalty.

England Under-18s head coach Neil Dewsnip is excited to see what Thomas and the other new faces can do.

"We have a few injuries at the moment, which has meant that we’ve been able to call up Daniel Adshead (Rochdale), Luke Thomas and Morgan Whittaker (Derby) for the first time,” said Dewsnip.

“It’s a great chance for them to show what they can do, hopefully perform well and start their junior international careers.”

Thomas is one of four City players called up to represent the Three Lions this month, with Ben Chilwell in the senior squad and Demarai Gray and Harvey Barnes in the Under-21 side.

England Under-21s took their unbeaten run to 21 matches with a 2-1 victory over Italy Under-21s in Ferrara.

With the home side having started the better, Solanke's eighth-minute opener came against the run of play.

England responded after the interval, with Demarai Gray a threat, and Solanke scored the winner with a smart side-foot finish from inside the six-yard box.

It was an Africa Cup of Nations qualification game to forget for Nigeria's Kelechi Iheanacho.

Buhle Mkhwanazi's own goal had put Gernot Rohr's men in front after a sublime finish but a resurgent display from South Africa saw them equalise thanks to Lebo Mothiba.

And Iheanacho was at the heart of a calamitous outing for the three-time African kings, as his numerous misses cost his side victory at the FNB Stadium.

Sky say Shaw is expected to start. Harsh on Chilly after bossing the last 3 England games and being in good form for us ?

Yes agree. Although Shaw has probably been uniteds best player so not like he's out of form. Hopefully Chilwell won't get dropped back to the under 21s when Danny Rose is fit again

Defensive pair Harry Maguire and Ben Chilwell, two men to feature in City’s starting XI at Turf Moor, have once again been selected for duty by England manager Gareth Southgate.

The Three Lions will contest UEFA European Championships qualifiers against Czech Republic, on Friday, and Montenegro, on Monday, after securing their place in June's Nations League finals.

Czech Republic will visit Wembley (7:45pm GMT kick-off), while England’s assignment against Montenegro sees them head to Podgorica City Stadium (7:45pm GMT kick-off).

City’s English representation continues at Under-21s level with Academy graduates Hamza Choudhury and Harvey Barnes being joined by James Maddison and Demarai Gray.

A duo of international friendlies await the Young Lions – verses Poland at Ashton Gate on Thursday, and Germany at Vitality Stadium on Tuesday (both 7:45pm GMT kick-offs).

With the summer’s U21 European Championships on the horizon, the Foxes quartet will be determined to impress manager Aidy Boothroyd as he looks to assess his squad.

.

There’s also an Under-18s call-up for City left-back Luke Thomas, who has stepped up from the Club’s Academy side to represent the Development Squad in Premier League 2 this year.

Thomas, 18, will hope to be involved when the England youngsters face Japan, Czech Republic and Mexico in the UAE Sports Chain Cup.

They take on Japan on Wednesday and Czech Republic on Friday (both 4pm GMT kick-offs), before Sunday's meeting with Mexico (1:30pm GMT kick-off).

Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel’s Denmark, on the other hand, will contest an international friendly in Kosovo on Thursday (6pm GMT kick-off).

Following that fixture, the 2018 Danish Player of the Year will hope to appear in a European Championships qualifier in Switzerland on Tuesday (7:45pm GMT kick-off).

Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans, on loan from AS Monaco, has also been selected by his country for a double-header of qualifiers.

First, Roberto Martínez's 2018 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists tackle Russia in Brussels on Thursday, before heading to Cyprus on Sunday (both 7:45pm GMT kick-offs).

Middle man Wilfred Ndidi is also in contention for his country this month as Nigeria complete their Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign with a fixture against Seychelles on Friday.

That match kicks off at 3pm GMT with Ndidi’s side top of Group E with 10 points from five matches, one above second-place South Africa and three better off than Libya in third.

Elsewhere, defender Jonny Evans has once again been selected by Northern Ireland, who are scheduled to face Estonia and Belarus in European Championships qualifying.

They welcome Estonia to Windsor Park on Thursday, before taking on Belarus, also at home, on Sunday (both 7:45pm GMT kick-offs).

Evans' defensive partner Çağlar Söyüncü, of Turkey, meanwhile, could come up against Albania on Friday (7:45pm GMT kick-off) and Moldova on Monday (5pm GMT kick-off).

Although Andy King, on loan at Derby County, is currently injured, fellow Wales internationals Danny Ward and George Thomas, with Scunthorpe United this term, are set for duty.

They entertain Trinidad & Tobago in a friendly at the Racecourse Ground on Wednesday (7:45pm GMT kick-off) before a Euro qualifier of their own, against Slovakia, in Cardiff on Sunday (2pm GMT kick-off).
