Ladies n Gentlemen...We have a defence..!!!

Whether in or Out for Puel....

No matter, what Backline he puts out(all permatations)....

We have, not a super defence,.....but a damn good one!!! (Picking up on lndividual gameda  small errors,is a post wasted)

Some words for 2 title heroes,    Simmo &Wes have more than held their own.  I even, when defending them, have been so pleasantly suprised, they both

have bought not poor-avg performances, but even with the odd Slip up,Wes longer maybe but both have had good.avg- top performances this season...

That alone, has given us a big positive from this 1st year from Puel..!!

We do, but don't underestimate the effect that the Mendy / Ndidi / Hamza trio has on our defence! If you look at them throughout the game, their positioning is fantastic. The compress the play and it keeps the team compact. It means teams have to play out wide and cross it in where our tall and aerially dominant centre halves can head it out with ease... sounds familiar to a style we used in 15/16. Supposedly that was quite a good season?

Whilst we lose something going forwards with the 433, the stability it gives us means we have a platform to build on. Against Chelsea and Man City and Everton we never looked like we were going to be thrashed. Chelsea did have two fantastic opportunities but they came more from individual errors than cutting us open.

Hamza deserves massive credit. He was everywhere today with lots of great challenges. If those three could improve their passing, we'd really be in business! Even the usually reliable Papy Mendy was a bit all over the shop with his delivery.

Imo has to play evans alongside maguire in league games. Nothing against wes but those 2 should be the preffered centre backs.

7 clean sheets in 12 games for Wes, bit harsh there.

I just think long term it is the obvious partnership. Also the amount of games in a short space of time is taking it's toll on wes.

Johnny Evans has been exceptional as well as SlabHead. I was a doubter when we signed him but he is fuching good. Great Stuff From Ricardo as per usual and Chilwell showed glimpses despite being slow off the mark. GG

And herein lies a problem for many on here. When we won the title we went out all guns blazing under Claudio, Arsenal taught us a lesson at the KP and we went back to basics. A solid defence makes it so much easier to win games, we are a few players from making the next step up but looking at the last 6 league games, 3 wins 3 losses Kasper has had very little to do including the loss to Spurs we have played 3 of the top 4 and gave away very little chance wise. Whatever some may want to deny we are going In the right direction. Not sure still why anybody wants to risk changing the management at the moment and taking such a gamble. Souness summed up Puel by saying he does a good job with what he has got, with some players about to move on and Barnes and Benko waiting in the wings you would hope fans would be happier.

I agree, Evans was very solid today & plays well alongside Maguire.

It took 3 defensive midfielders to recreate Kante, but we’ve finally done it :D

probably tongue in cheek,from you...but

Just shows really, without no over/under statement... What Kante was/is as a player...

And he's still maturing...He's the one player After leaving Leicester, that I enjoy watching developing & playing.

Now if one of our 3 can pick up,his scoring antics...lol

Agree in some circumstances..but if you take in and think about, how often our defence has been put under pressure,by these same 3 players,by actual

poor ball holding, and given away passes in front of goal...then the defence again takes the plaudits.

today.  Mendy did a top covering tackle that helped Simmo, but Simmo and Evans reciprocated more time in like...

in today's game, especially first half, there was some abysmal giving and loss of easy ball from both sides....!!I

Next game I would rest Ndidi/Mendy,and get on the front foot with Maddison,Choudry, with one of the for mentioned,

Doing the hard DM role

lol No it isn't, he's getting better if anything. Stop trying to make a case for playing new signings for the sake of it.  This isn't football manager.

So why didn't he play the last 2 games? Illness/injury so it is taking it's toll. Also evans played well today. Mom on sky.

Joint fewest goal conceded outside the top four.

Just need to work on the attack now.

That is actually a phenomenal stat.

Weve conceded only 2 goals more than Spurs.

Was he though?

Could have been sent off for a terrible tackle and then gave a terrible header away and lunged in giving a free kick away in a poor position.

The rest he was really solid.

.....

If Soyuncu did the same he'd be slammed, but Evans gets away with it. I may have missed it but havent seen it mentioned.

Not singling out you here, but its amazing how a win seems to change peoples judgement!

I think Wes has done very well since his last red card.

Simmon has hopefully just played himself back into the side. He was awesome on defense.

Evans should really be starting more. Question is does he replace Wes or MacGuire. Wes is stronger of the two defensively but MacGuire is generally better on the ball (except yesterday!).

With other good players we have on defense, we are in a good position re defense!

im possibly guilty of exuberance here but... Hamza has made a WORLD of difference, he is superb at positioning, his timing is exquisite and his pace and push forward is a joy to watch.

We have a gem here and his inclusion makes the whole team look better.

It's not just the amount of goals either- the only game we've dropped points in where we've taken the lead is Arsenal away, so there's a lot of mental resilience there.

We've conceded 9 less than Man Utd and 7 less than Arsenal.

The 3 DMs helps quite a bit though.

8 in 13 for Evans now, after a far from smooth introduction, so it is quite balanced.

I wonder what Harry has managed as a comparison...

For the matches they've played over 60 mins in:

Maguire: 6 clean sheets in 16, 18 goals conceded

Evans: 8 clean sheets in 12, 5 goals conceded

Morgan: 7 clean sheets in 17, 17 goals conceded

Soyuncu: 2 clean sheets in 5, 3 goals conceded

Going purely by that (I know, not the full picture), Evans is our best defender.

Wes has been brilliant so far this season, I really don’t understand the calls for him not to play

8 goals conceded in 11 games and 23 all season, which is bettered by only the top four. It's gone quite under the radar but this is something Puel needs to take some credit on. We are genuinely quite decent defensively after an early fear (Bournemouth A, Everton H, Arsenal A) that we wouldn't be.

Keep it up.
