Realistic Expectations

Recommended Posts

We hear about it all the time about any team that isnt one of the so called big 6, we should all be hoping to (A) avoid relegation and (B) think 7th or 8th is a magnificent season if you can get there. That should basically be a realistic expectation and if achieved a great and successful season.

Now on the face of it when you are competing against clubs with the support and history of the likes of Everton, West Ham and Newcastle etc you would say Leicester, a proverbial yo-yo club if you erase the last 2/3 years should be delighted in being a top half club. However, my opinion on this is that regardless of the size of the club or what the so called experts should keep reeling out with there boring football rhetoric, the reality is that our recruitment has been much better than most clubs coupled with the youths starting to make an impression that we should be aiming high.

If you look at say Watford who currently occupy 7th, how many of there players would be good enough for the top 6? Maybe the PSG target Doucouré? Wolves have some talented players like Neves who may be good enough for a top team but for me even the likes of Coady, Jota and Moutinho arent at that level. The argument is we have a team full of top players. Maguire can walk into most top 6 defences and is an England International whilst by his side Chilwell has become Englands first choice left back and could waltz into most of the top 6 side. After a shaky start, Ricardo looks different class.Any side who wants an attacking defence like Arsenal or Man Utd would love him in their team surely. Ball winning midfielders are in demand and I could see Ndidi playing in Man Citys midfield when Fernandinho moves on. Imagine him after a season of training with them technical players? He would be awesome there or Spurs IMO Liverpool. Schmeichel IMO would be better than what Arsenal have. Vardy would waltz into Chelseas starting line up. We then have kids like Hamza, Harvey Barnes, Demerai Gray and last and by no means least James Maddison who all look destined for a high end career. We even have players like Benkovic who is rated as Celtics best defender this season who looks the real deal.

The point is we are not that small club who yo-yo`ed the leagues with over achieving pants players and we need to change our mentality. We actually have the nucleus of an absolutely outstanding side. I know we will always sell our best players like we have done with Kante and Mahrez but there is no reason why we cant be a sort of Borussia Dortmund who sell there best players for tens of millions and then add younger players who they turn into superstars. In between that as a club they still manage to secure honours.

What do you think our realistic expectations should be? I think with a couple of signings we could really kick on. I also dont feel with Puel, a very honourable man BTW has the ability or likeability to get the most out of his players. Jose Mourinho has shown that that cold unapproachable boring way is the stuff of yesterdays managers. You need passion and to get these rich players fighting for you. Unfortunately for Puel he doesnt seem like he has what it takes.

Anyway, looking at our team, squad, finances etc what do you think our realistic expectations should be?

This season is a transition season. Would hope for a top 10 finish but wouldn't be surprised if we finished lower. Realistically 7th is the best a club like ours can realistically aim for, with the occasional year where we sometimes finish one or two places higher if the "money" teams have a bad season. So realistically I think 7-10th is what we should expect, though I think given that Mahrez left even top 10 was at the start of the season optimistic.

Our expectations are unrealistic because we've all seen the greatest story in football history. That season was like a drug that we are all having withdrawal symptoms from. Every single week you were bouncing and pinching yourself, it was an unbelievable feeling. We all wished it would return.

The only chance a non money team has to become a great team is to try and build a young team from scratch, develop them together and then hold onto them when they get good. That's what Spurs have done, and although they haven't won anything, it's the reason why they are now a top 4 team. This is the strategy our club is trying to implement and I applaud them for doing it. I believe it's the only realistic strategy we can try to try and win another trophy. Doesn’t matter who the manager is, just stick to the plan.

To be honest I am just happy that we are back in the Premier League and are a half decent team. We were stuck in the Championship for years it felt like and after Deeney Day I thought we'd never return.

9-12 I would expect if we were challenging for cups but as we are out I would have to go with 7-10. Looking at the history of the club anywhere in these brackets would be a good season compared to what we have seen.

Top half with the occasional europa league showing. Everything is in place to support the top 6. FFP is a joke so outside of the big 6 is it's own league. Best of the rest is the best we can hope for.

I personally think with the players we have and money we spent we should be minimum of 7 or 8th looking to push the top six. One thing that I feel has changed recently is the tv deal in the premier league has become so huge financially it’s kind of a leveller.

I agree that we have some really good players and our squad has more talent now than when we won the league. The problem is they don’t play together as a team, they seem to lack the esprit de courts as it were.

With these players and owners I’d say top 6 wasn’t out of the question at all; possibly higher. Puel seems to struggle to get the best out of them though. They need leading and he doesn’t strike me as a leader; he’s more of a director of football I’d say.

We might lose our way altogether at this rate, and a golden generation could end up underachieving. I wouldn’t sack him, I’d kick him upstairs.

We have a right to be ambitious and expectations should be high which is why we don’t want to settle for the current state of affairs.

I REALISTICALLY EXPECT people on here to go crackers and predict a heavy loss after the squad announcement an hour before kick off.

I REALISTICALLY EXPECT brain farts by the players to be attributed to the manager.

I REALISTICALLY EXPECT people to overlook the transition of the team, the development of young players and the change in playing style.

I REALISTICALLY EXPECT Puel not to survive our spoilt fanbase who want it all and want it yesterday. :(

I'm sad.

This squad under Puel is a random number generator.

We are easily the best outside the top six (wins v Man City and at Chelsea  ...  assets like Vardy, Ricardo, and two England starters).

We are also down with the dregs  (losses v Cardiff and at Newport ... "assets" like the other strikers plus most of the bench).

I think we may be underachieving.  But It's hard to even construct an argument because who knows?

To me it's more maddening than boring.

As others have said, top half and the chance of a shot at Europe - so long as we actually take the shot!

Breaking into the top six now will take years - FFP has broken the league into three effectively:

- Top six: Ruling the roost

- 7th-12th: Pushing for Europe

- 13th & below: Surviving

Nothing is as fixed as people think. In the current top 6 we have two clubs who were put there by ambitious billionaires (Chelsea and Man City), three who have been there a long time of which two haven’t won the league for a long time, and Spurs who are in there after a few good years but could easily fall into the best of the rest section.

A few years before people mostly spoke of the top 4 and before that the top 2.

We we need consistent gates of 40k, a few more trophies and another 3-5 years of growth to get into that group but population and owners wise it’s not illogical.
