reynard Posted 31 January 2019 Posted 31 January 2019 Great result and one I didn't expect at all. Great credit to Puel who got his tactics absolutely correct for this one. Maguire's yellow is absolutely correct. The ball is travelling away from goal and there is no certainty that Mane would even have got there, might even have slipped over on such a wet pitch. The penalty that wasn't should have been but then they might not have scored it in any case. I never go with the argument that not being awarded a penalty costs one side the game. It isn't a goal until the ball crosses the line. Just as if Gray had squared to Maddison he might have scored but equally might not. The clearing of the snow is gamesmanship but it is all about home advantage and most teams would do similar at their own ground. Feel we have just helped keep the title race alive though Man City were really quite poor against Newcastle and for me Liverpool remain firm favourites.

Son got the first My bad, I went with the BBC live scores yesterday, and they mentioned him first as the goalscorer. In any case, I think even with "only" Llorente up front, his performance yesterday will have given him some belief back that he is capable at this level, which makes it a bit harder for us...

We have one striker, one just about consistent winger and loads of massively inconsistent young lads (the defence is sound). There is a lot of potential in the squad, but they aren't going to be able to reach the levels some think we should be at just yet. We have too many raw and inconsistent players, which should improve as time goes on. A few games that play the the strengths we've always had, defending and countering don't change that. You must be reading a different forum to me then!
foxy boxing Posted 31 January 2019 Posted 31 January 2019 Really great performance and result especially after conceading such an early goal. You would have expected Liverpool to be all over us wanting to get the result but we played extremly well and had chances to win it!. we need to play like we are playing the top six every week!.
Blanchflower78 Posted 31 January 2019 Posted 31 January 2019 Liverpool guys I was with were very complimentary on us and cannot see why anyone would question Puel. Explained it was mainly about home performances and a lack of intent. If we can get that on track and with the younger players getting better and more experience we could really become a solid Prem side. Chilly outstanding again.
Nathan mcc Posted 31 January 2019 Posted 31 January 2019 Great to see Leicester fans finally agreeing with us norn iron men regarding J.Evans quality ! We’ve been watching the guy for years and he’s absolute quality !! Should have had more game time this season!
Wortho Posted 31 January 2019 Posted 31 January 2019 Great performance from all the team. I really think we could give United a game on Sunday. I don't think we will see Simpson and Morgan in the team much more. They have been brilliant for us in the past.
danlcfc4ever Posted 31 January 2019 Posted 31 January 2019 Great to throw a spanner in the works for the scousers! Good performance too, we are a much better side against teams who will attack us, our problem really comes when a team sits in and we have to break them down. The scousers I was sat near (I was given a ticket in the home end) were the most annoying football fans I've experienced so far!
DerbyshireFox Posted 31 January 2019 Posted 31 January 2019 I thought Wilf and Mendy had their best games in weeks last night, Chilwell did fantastically well shackling Salah and Ricardo again stood out. Not even worth debating Maguire’s booking - it’s 40 yards from goal, not a cat in hells chance it’s a clear goal scoring opportunity. Credit to the Liverpool fans who had a Vichai banner next to the away end before the game
Matt_Lcfc Posted 31 January 2019 Posted 31 January 2019 Brilliant performance. A gritty performance and thought we could’ve taken all 3. Everybody was brilliant imo, nearly another textbook away performance at a big club. just more frustrating in a way how we can compete with the big teams yet we can’t dispatch teams like Cardiff and Southampton. anyway onto Sunday
Cadno'r Cymoedd Posted 31 January 2019 Posted 31 January 2019 Some twat on the Guardian website comments: As a Leicester fan this ought to have been a good result, but given the alternative options available I'd love to see Liverpool win it ahead of the other challengers so spent the end of the match last night willing a home goal. It never came. What a knob.
fazzyfox Posted 31 January 2019 Posted 31 January 2019 Debating the pitch sweeping incident on Talk Sport right now. I know we couldn't have expected it but is there any rule to say any of our staff or subs (or filbert) would not be allowed to clear the other end? Better take some brooms next time! I know it was more to do with the flow of the ball but had there been an injury at our end after they'd had the opportunity to make it safer there would be a case to answer.

Fitness has been an issue, so whilst I agree he should have had a few more games, it is probably in single figures tbf. I can't see him being dropped unless he breaks down again, because he clearly helps whoever is his CB partner play better. Was he regarded as (just) a touch injury prone at previous clubs?
Vardinio'sCat Posted 31 January 2019 Posted 31 January 2019 Interesting take on Henderson https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/jan/30/jordan-henderson-liverpool-right-back-leicester-city Getting the job done by any means necessary is a trait of any title winner and it will encourage Liverpool, even after an underwhelming draw against Leicester, how skilled they have been at the art this season. “It’s this mindset of ‘finding a way’ that will be critical for us,” said Jürgen Klopp on what is required in the final four months of a tantalising campaign. For the first time this season the leaders found no way to victory over a team outside the Premier League top six, but it could have been worse. Klopp has sought a variety of internal solutions to the problematic right-back position that Leicester belatedly exploited at Anfield. On Wednesday it was Jordan Henderson’s turn to fill a role that Nathaniel Clyne, Rafael Camacho, Fabinho and James Milner have all assumed in recent months due to injuries, suspensions and illness. The England man deputised well but at cost to the control and balance of the Liverpool midfield. Klopp must hope positive medical bulletins on Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who may return from knee-ligament trouble for Monday’s trip to West Ham, are accurate and that relief is on the horizon for the run-in. “We had to find a solution,” the Liverpool manager explained of Henderson’s switch. “We tried Rafa Camacho as well because Hendo couldn’t train all week but in the end I decided for a more defensive and experienced solution in that position because they go for that side. [Ben] Chilwell enjoys their offensive game, he is overlapping constantly, and I didn’t want to give Rafa, in his first game, such a big test. But Hendo did really well. It was all good from that point of view.” It may not be what the club captain wishes to hear for the long term but on the limited evidence from his Liverpool career, Henderson makes for an able full-back when need arises. You had to go back to April 2012 for the midfielder’s last extended display at right-back. That was at Blackburn Rovers when Liverpool’s stand-in goalkeeper Doni was dismissed after 25 minutes, prompting the then manager Kenny Dalglish to substitute Jon Flanagan and move Henderson into the back-line with impressive results in a 3-2 win. Klopp’s switch also paid dividends initially, although Claude Puel’s strange decision not to target Liverpool’s well-documented weakness with Demarai Gray helped the midfielder settle into an unaccustomed role. Henderson did not have a direct opponent to track for 23 minutes, with James Maddison tucked inside on the left and Gray starting on the right. That gave the 28-year-old freedom to support the attack in a dominant opening by the home side. He was so supportive as to be further forward than Mohamed Salah when Andy Robertson and Virgil van Dijk exchanged passes on the left of the home defence, putting him in position to deliver inviting crosses for Xherdan Shaqiri and Roberto Firmino during the brightest spell. The captain’s crisp passing on a difficult, icy pitch was as sharp as his crossing. It contributed to the 30-pass move that resulted in Sadio Mané’s swift breakthrough and offered Salah several opportunities to run at Chilwell and Harry Maguire. The two defenders were outstanding throughout, however, and won their individual challenges regularly. Henderson’s only problems in the early exchanges came from self-inflicted errors. An over-elaborate backheel on his part squandered possession and resulted in Joel Matip collecting a booking for a foul on Jamie Vardy. There was also a minor penalty scare when, from the first of two wayward clearances by Alisson, Maddison tumbled over the emergency full-back inside the area but his appeals for a spot-kick were rightly dismissed by the referee Martin Atkinson. Only when the Leicester manager corrected the error midway through the first half and switched Gray to the left, pinning him on Henderson, did the flow of the game and the quality of Liverpool’s performance turn. In an instant, the right-back had to abandon his attacking duties and concentrate on previously untested defensive duties. His absence from the midfield battle was felt keenly as Naby Keita and Shaqiri struggled. Gray sprinted clear when Leicester first broke after Puel’s tactical change. His dangerous low cross towards Vardy was intercepted by Van Dijk who, having missed several days training over the past week through illness, was caught out when Maguire equalised. Henderson and Van Dijk were the defenders closest to the England international when Chilwell’s header dropped back into the danger zone but Maguire was the latter’s man and was lost to damaging effect. It could and should have been worse given the quality of chances Leicester created and missed. Gray broke free on the counterattack in the 73rd minute but wastefully shot straight at Alisson instead of squaring for the unmarked Maddison. A point gained on Manchester City at the top, but Liverpool departed with regret.

Guest Col city fan Posted 31 January 2019 Posted 31 January 2019 Like most, if they are being honest, I feared the worst when we conceded so early. Then we just looked a different side and were the better side for parts of the game imo. The best chances went to Leicester. What a Jekyll and Hyde side we are. I have problem fathoming us out!

Puel moved Gray over to the left to force Henderson back who though was at RB was allowed too much space in front of him and supplemented their midfield. So I guess it’ll probably come down to Puel crap should have started like that or Super Puel for spotting what was happening and making the change.
oxtonfox Posted 31 January 2019 Posted 31 January 2019 I watched the first 6 minutes in a pub in London overwhelmed with Liverpool fans. I walked out then as I couldn’t stand what I was hearing and watching. I guess we had possession for about 15 seconds during that time. Lack of faith maybe but I was pleasantly surprised on MOTD later. Perhaps we should have won the game? Really pleased so hope we can go one better on Sunday. I think I’ll stay away from live games in the future.

Agreed, I was on the verge of giving Sunday a miss until last night, but they’ve dragged me back from the edge. Good performance but i’m not expecting anything remotely recognisable to it on Sunday. Wolves aside it’s beginning to get to me seeing how we play away and then having to put up with the home performances we’ve had.
Guest ttfn Posted 31 January 2019 Posted 31 January 2019 The biggest issue with the idea that Maguire should have been sent off is that it was a dive from Mane, much as it was a dive from Maddison for us early on. Maguire has barely touched Mane and he’s just thrown himself to the floor. Clearly Mane didn’t think it was a goal scoring opportunity otherwise he wouldn’t have gone down like he’d been shot from a brush of his arm. The brush-of-the-arm dive is probably my least favourite of all of the dive varieties.
