ealingfox Posted 29 March 2019 Posted 29 March 2019 It's a shame I'm moving out of Umunna's constituency next week as I was very much looking forward to voting against him and watching him lose his seat. Never mind, seeing some of the others get annihilated will be decent.

Foxxed Posted 29 March 2019 Posted 29 March 2019 So if this vote fails to pass we either completely throw in the towel in - sign nothing, agree to nothing, plan little and hold strong to the idea exiting the EU ain't no big deal - or ask the people if they like the withdrawal agreement and deal, the agreement and deal that MPs from all parties refuse to accept. Amazing.

Capt Farage will be sailing SS Great Britain into bold new territories soon, having adventures where problems are solved by angrily blaming foreign institutions and sailing far, far away where the need for political and economic cooperation gloriously evaporates under a sky decorated by union jacks.

He also fails to mention that the European Union isn't a fixed construct, it has evolved and grown massively over time. The European Union 25 years ago isn't comparable to the institution today at all. Also, he's absolving the Union of all responsibility for the UK crisis, instead blames it on the media and Parliament. Where's the self-criticism from the EU's point of view? It's great that we have had peace for roughly 70+ years now, but at what cost and for how much longer? Economic uncertainties in many (Southern) countries, implementations of EU law over national law, rise of populism in Eastern Europe and mass migration are pressing and important issues. You can't just have some countries benefitting from the Union whilst others continue to languish. People need to be educated about the EU's history, its initial cause and goals, and the Union needs to come under scrutiny for some of its current or recent decisions and intentions. I'd be very wary of a European Superstate that dictates your everyday life. Remain skeptic, question the construct and its influence on your daily life, stay in touch with your local MPs, push them to respect the voters/citizens and don't accept anything for granted. I don’t disagree with what you said, but it has been a one-sided bashing of the EU for a long time. It has been scapegoat number 1 for various governments. Either directly or indirectly with the constant attacks on immigrants. Nobody thinks the EU is perfect it is a multifaceted legislative organisation trying to balance out the needs and wants of a lot of very different countries. It’s a tough job and every decision results in 30 odd countries interpreting it in the way the best suits them. It’s a tough job but it has lead to greater unity and collaboration between it's member states that has seen huge benefits. It is those core principles that make me think the EU is still worth being a part of. There really is no need for Ashworth to list it’s failings at this point, there have been people doing that for decades, it is just sad that it is such a rarity to hear someone extolling it’s virtues. Even in the remain campaign we only heard the bad stuff that would happen if we left and no one banging the drum for all the positives if we remain. I do get annoyed with some arguments, yes some countries have struggled economically and yes the EU hasn’t handled it well, but there is no telling what state Greece or Ireland or Portugal would have been in without the EU. Many countries periodically have boom and bust and complete financial meltdown whilst you may disagree with what the EU did it might have been a greater crisis if Greece had been on it’s own for the last 20 years ending up with a huge run on the drachma causing hyper inflation and even greater levels of poverty and crisis. Or it could have been fine. We’ll never know. The fact was the EU was there to try and deal with the crisis and the EU needs to be held accountable but just because it made some mistakes doesn’t make it a complete busted flush.
Nick Posted 29 March 2019 Posted 29 March 2019 In every other member state there’s flags everywhere marking the funding and the achievements of EU from hospitals, beaches, theatres, research centres, arts, housing, sanitation, highways.. the list is endless but I never really saw much of that in England. I do feel for all the EU’s failings and beurocracy the achievements were not celebrated or publicised in England, just very much the focus always appeared to be slander by any avenue possible. Just sayin.

Innovindil Posted 29 March 2019 Posted 29 March 2019 Truly is amazing, it's taken a random old dude noone had even heard of before yesterday giving a one-sided but well made speech to show people that screeching "reeeeeeeeee racism!" doesn't do as much as actually putting forward the positives of your "side". Finally. Thank you random old dude.
Wymsey Posted 29 March 2019 Posted 29 March 2019 So, to the people who voted to leave the EU, do you regret your actions now or do you still believe that it'll work out eventually?..

I don't regret the way I voted at all, I do regret the way it has gone down. I think anyone that predicted both of the main parties becoming completely inept to the point of literally having NO idea of the way forward deserves a cookie. I still believe it could have worked, but there are far too many people with their own agendas to unite everyone behind it. It's literally the final hour and we've got politicians still playing the game, tory MP's wanting a shot at the top, Labour still trying to bring down the tories for their own gain. SNP sniping from the sides trying to lay foundations for another Scottish referendum. DUP in a ridiculous position consider how irrelevant they were before. Anyone claiming this isn't a complete flustercluck is on some proper serious drugs tbh.
Buce Posted 29 March 2019 Posted 29 March 2019 "Ultimately the United Kingdom is more important to me than the European Union. So if the DUP felt the United Kingdom were being divided up in the deal, then that would mean it were impossible to vote for the deal under any circumstances." - Jacob Rees-Smug yesterday. Votes for May's deal today. “If we vote for the PM’s lamentable withdrawal agreement we are skewered.” - Bozo Johnson yesterday. Votes for May's deal today.
