Why Brendan Rodgers' arrival could scupper Leicester's move for Harry Wilson

Neil Jones Liverpool FC Correspondent
The Foxes had targeted the winger for next season but the appointment of the former Reds boss complicates matterLiverpool will look to secure a Premier Leagu eloan for Harry Wilson next season – but Brendan Rodgers’ arrival at Leicester may end the Foxes’ hopes of signing the Walesinternational.

Wilson is one of a number of loanees whose future will be assessed by the Reds in the summer, as Jurgen Klopp looks to streamline his squad.

The 21-year-old has caught the eye with Derby County in the Championship this season, scoring 12 goals for Frank Lampard’s promotion-chasing outfit.

After a similarly productive spell with Hull Cityduring the second half of last season, Liverpool believe the next step for the Wales international is to play top-flight football.

Wilson signed a new, improved long-term contract with the Reds before moving to Derby last summer, and Goal understands that discussions have already taken place with the player and his representatives as to his next move.

Leicester had expressed strong interest in taking Wilson to the King Power Stadium next season, with Foxes head of recruitment Eduardo Macia holding talks with Michael Edwards, Liverpool’s sporting director, about a potential deal.

But with Rodgers having replaced the sacked Claude Puel recently, a loan deal is unlikely to progress. Rodgers wanted to sign Wilson for Celtic last summer, but the Reds had reservations over his willingness to trust young players over the course of a full season. The case of Charly Musonda, who made just four appearances after joining Celtic from Chelsea, was noted.

Furthermore, it is anticipated that Rodgers will look to add experience in the transfer market this summer as he looks to make an impact upon his return to the Premier League. Macia's future, meanwhile, is uncertain with the Foxes considering a shake-up behind the scenes.

As for Wilson, his focus remains with Derby, as he looks to help Lampard’s side reach the play-offs come the end of the season.

He started as the Rams came from behind to beat Wigan 2-1 on Tuesday night, a result which leaves them outside the top six on goal difference only. It was the Wrexham-born youngster’s 35th appearance of the campaign.

Liverpool expect there will be significant interest come the end of the season, both for loan deals and permanent transfers. They already believe Wilson could fetch in excess of £20 million if he were to be sold, but the preference at this stage is a domestic loan move

so Macia IS still with us! i think. maybe.

Well he set up or discussed the deal at some point and BR is binning it so that doesn’t look like a marriage made in heaven

Doubt we’d start developing other clubs players for them given our ambitions, so I’d rule out a loan.

Also £20m is quite excessive.

Not likely.

The price isnt excessive, that is the going rate for a highly rated young player ripping up the Championship. Hence the £24m we paid for Maddison and hence if we were to sell Barnes it would be for at least that.

So much in that article doesn't stack up. Rodgers is known to trust young players, I doubt he'll only be signing experience, I'm not sure we'll be looking to develop Liverpools players next season and why are Liverpool bothered that a Chelsea player didn't prove good enough for Celtic anyway?

Whatever happens I just hope that Rodgers and his team are in early for new players to give them time to settle and none of the last minute rush to buy, state early who is leaving as well.... :scarf:

Agreed, I didn't quite get the part about Musonda. Celtic have signed plenty of loan players recently that see a lot of game time, Benkovic (pre-injury) included. Nothing to do with Rodgers' youth policy, maybe Musonda just didn't impress?

Not worth 21 million. Don't want to get shafted by Liverpool again.

Why? We paid that for madders. If he has one good season his resale value is triple....

Whoops.. Yes Liverpool!!

Looks quite Maddison esq so having him coming from the right, Barnes from the left, Maddison back in the centre along with Tielemans we’ll have some ammunition for Vardy ?

Perhaps he's a possible replacement for Maddison?... (If a massive bid comes in for him.)

We shouldn't be taking loanees from home based teams unless it includes an option to buy, we're not here to develop other clubs players.
