Bazly Posted 28 June 2019 Posted 28 June 2019 After only a few month at the Forest Martin has got the chop. Seems there is a crop of old school British managers who just cannot hold a good job down these days with not many new ones coming through. Shame for Martin its all gone slowly downhill since he left Celtic, lets hope we won't be saying the same of BR in 15 years time. Happy retirement Martin.
Guest Papasmurf Posted 28 June 2019 Posted 28 June 2019 Surprised me earlier that did. Went to check out a forest forum. Don’t worry, I had a good wash afterwards. Another case of snaky senior players getting the manager the boot apparently. One poster commented he wasn’t aware they had any senior players.
Countryfox Posted 28 June 2019 Posted 28 June 2019 Already covered in another thread Baz ... keep up.
HybridFox Posted 28 June 2019 Posted 28 June 2019 Thought he did fairly well at Villa to be fair, overachieved! Almost got them into the Champions League. They just weren't run well at board level and you could argue until Dean Smith now, they had never really been the same. I do agree he is past his best now though. Top man but he hasn't got the magic anymore. The game's moved on.
Monsell1976 Posted 28 June 2019 Posted 28 June 2019 Have said before O’Neil not the same manager without Robertson, Pearson not the same manager without Shakespeare. Agree the sacking is harsh, he would have got them out of the league in a season or 2 but sadly owners want instant success nowadays due to the money in the premier league, sad for O’Neil but at least forest will stay down for a few more years ?
fuchsntf Posted 28 June 2019 Posted 28 June 2019 The owners...have no sympathy neither for history nor legends,it seems..!!!
Super_horns Posted 28 June 2019 Posted 28 June 2019 Too old school for the modern day player it seems - a few like that but he'll probably get a job somewhere else. They all do!
LCCFox96 Posted 28 June 2019 Posted 28 June 2019 Surprised to see MON gone as he did quite well at Forest. At least he had time enough to pinch Benalouane off us though (for a fee!).
sacreblueits442 Posted 28 June 2019 Posted 28 June 2019 ... so hard to keep re-inventing yourself! Fergy managed it, building breaking down the team then adopting a new strategy in order to stay the new styles of play. If Mon continues in management without adopting new styles or having a number two who is open to today's type of football he will find himself in this position once again. Sad to see him struggling in an environment he once excelled in but still does not diminish my admiration for what he achieved here. Different class!!
sm1 Posted 28 June 2019 Posted 28 June 2019 O'Neil losing his job is more a reflection of the clueless Forest hierarchy then him. He did decent job the few months he was there, but wasn't given a chance to build his team.
The Horse's Mouth Posted 28 June 2019 Posted 28 June 2019 I don't think they had much of a future with him, I'm surprised they got rid of Karanka in all honesty. Forest are basically us under mandaric these days, a constant revolving door.
Gamble92 Posted 29 June 2019 Posted 29 June 2019 The fact so many Forest fans are happy a club legend is gone tells you how bad he was. They won their last 3 games to paper over the cracks, but they were playing football from the medieval times and the results were pretty dire. I can go back to liking him now.

Top man but he hasn't got the magic anymore. The game's moved on. Not really. He spent A LOT of money at Villa when they were trying to push for the top 4 and he could never finish ahead of Eveeton who spent a lot less or 6th in the end and a lot of their recent issues came from gos overspending and signing mediocre players on huge, long contracts. Definitely can't say he overrachirved at Villa.
wokinghamfox Posted 29 June 2019 Posted 29 June 2019 Martin the Messiah will be back. Probably the greatest City manager of all time. Achieved loads with little to no cash and will never forget that Spurs home game where we were begging him to stay. Would love to see him back in some form of capacity. People saying he is past it have very short memories.

Does anyone remember the Sheffield United game?! Pretty much every City fan wanted him out after that...

Not me, I walked out that game and told my mum I could see what he was doing, and that we’d get promoted. A true and enlightened soul walking amongst the blundering blind.

Claridge Posted 29 June 2019 Posted 29 June 2019 Quite happy he has gone. Felt a bit guilty hoping they lost every match. Can go back to hoping for their relegation now

This is complete bull crap . Most people left at the end and about 500 stayed behind in the kop to protest . One of my friends was chosen to go and talk to O'Neil, I think five went in total . He explained to him that most fans had more of a problem with the board not spending and money. Which O'Neill agreed with and said he would push for more funds. Since then he (O'Neill) seemed to use that day to have a little dig to remind people that we all wanted him out and some fans seemed to have taken on that myth.
Spudulike Posted 29 June 2019 Posted 29 June 2019 1 hour ago, ROB-THE-BLUE said: Does anyone remember the Sheffield United game?! Pretty much every City fan wanted him out after that... I sat in the posh seats for that match (borrowed a season ticket) alongside the directors box. The vitriol directed towards the owners was something else, remember the "F off, Martin O'Neill" song to the Go West tune ?? I sat in silence watching the totally inept performance (apart from Muzzy, he was very decent). It was largely frustration coming out after what had promised to be a promotion season (The future's Marked out) and everyone felt let down. I was happy with the O'Neill appointment and was glad that Martin George had taken the gamble. I left the ground feeling embarrassed but mostly sad at what it had come to. I didn't want him out which made the turnaround all the more sweeter.
Foxandfolly Posted 29 June 2019 Posted 29 June 2019 I’ve been told by someone senior at a championship club (has interviewed MON twice) that he’s not the manager that we once had. He is so out of touch with the modern game and not particularly interested in it. I will never forget growing up with Martin’s team(s), he made Leicester City worth supporting, for which I’ll be eternally grateful; but as a club a manager he won’t ever repeat those highs.
