lavrentis Posted 8 July 2019 Posted 8 July 2019 Anyone done it? Perhaps you are living abroad in Spain or even you are an expat living in the UK. I recommend for people to do it if they are interested. I lived in Japan for a while doing IT (lots of overtime), so wasn't much of a holiday. Most were English teachers out there and they seemed to have a better time.
Carl the Llama Posted 8 July 2019 Posted 8 July 2019 Lived in Belgium for 8 years in total, wasn't my choice but I won't bitch too much about it because Brussels is a quality place to live for numerous reasons and I came out of it with a new understanding of foreign cultures and able to speak a foreign language and stumble around in another, so yeah I can also recommend doing so if the opportunity arises. I would add though that if you're reticent about learning a new language then don't live abroad in a non-Anglophone nation because it's so fvcking embarrassing for the rest of us watching you get confused that local service industry staff aren't fluent in the Queen's. Touristy regions in places like Spain and Turkey where a lot of Brits retire to and the seafront restaurants serve roast beef 24/7 does not count as somewhere that speaks English.
David Guiza Posted 8 July 2019 Posted 8 July 2019 Doesn't appeal to me at all, but I admire those who persue it as I imagine that you gain a great deal from the experience. I love living in Britain and always feel a great sense of being 'home' whenever flying back and seeing our green and pleasent land (without meaning to sound like the Brexit tourists board). I love visiting places, but I generally start missing home and all that comes with it after a few weeks and couldn't imagine not living here, even for 6 months or so.

Very informal as it's just to.discuss all that we need to do and find out exactly where we stand regarding taxes and residency etc. Been down this road before but this time we both think we've found the right place. If it doesn't work out then we come back.
Nick Posted 8 July 2019 Posted 8 July 2019 I worked some seasons teaching snowboarding in my early twenties but my job roles since haven’t really been portable enough to take outside the UK but given the right opportunity my wife and I would be keen.

Decided to stay after the Divorce, as much better place to live than the UK, despite all the quirky things you have put with here (and there are many!) . Winters are truly shocking, but I move out to Malaysia during this period as my Company are based there. If you get the chance - go for it, but just make sure you can see all our games live and listen to Stringer.

TiffToff88 Posted 8 July 2019 Posted 8 July 2019 I was given an offer last year to relocate. The company i was working for at the time had an office in Melton and and office in Dubai. I obviously was based in the Melton office. At the start of my short time at the company they sent me over to work in the Dubai office for 2 weeks to get to know the team over there. Thoroughly enjoyed those 2 weeks. Fast-forward 7 months and for financial reasons, the company closed the UK office and offered me the chance to do the exact same job in Dubai. Sadly it just wasn't the right time in my life to ship myself and my wife out to the middle east. But having that 2 week glimpse at what life could be like over there, i haven't ruled out a move out there at some time in the future if the right opportunity comes along.
whoareyaaa Posted 8 July 2019 Posted 8 July 2019 I think if I was over the age of 40/50 and no dependence on kids with a mortgage paid or money in the bank etc. I would definitely look to move somewhere with a hotter climate and more relaxed atmosphere Spain or somewhere like that 100% wouldn't even cross my mind.
leicsmac Posted 8 July 2019 Posted 8 July 2019 Over the past nine years, a little over five years and counting (in stints) in South Korea, which seems to do me good...and a year and a half in the US, which didn't. I've definitely enjoyed myself for the most part (still am) and I'd recommend to anyone to at least travel and see more of the world, but I wouldn't say that actually living abroad for a long time is for everyone.

Found myself to be much more productive - not sure what it is, but maybe because you don't spend so much time watching TV or getting worked up by smaller day to day stuff (?). Anyway, highly recommend it - you can usually come back if it doesn't work out for you!

It's like a switch flicks in your head -IMMIGRANT. YOU HAVE TO PROVE YOURSELF NOW
