Matty James

I thought he was quite good in 14/15 to be honest, one of the few players who took to Premier League football as soon as we came up.

I've never rated him, actually think King was better than him but I know I'm in the minority there. James is the sort of midfielder I just don't really appreciate. Neither a specialist at tackling and screening the play, nor very creative. Bores me. I wish him all the best as he's had a horrific last 5-6 years and he seems a proper decent character but I'm astonished he's still somehow here.

He’s not spectacular but you can appreciate what he does, especially if you see the bigger picture and his movement off the ball.

Maybe wouldn’t be the same these days with his injury making him less mobile but in 14/15 when we first came up he consistently put in a shift to accommodate for Cambiasso’s immobility but class on the ball.

I don’t think it’s any coincidence Pearson, Shakespeare, Puel and Rodgers all have rated him. Ranieri is the only one who has questioned his ability, and others within the club questioned Ranieri for that.

I don't think this bit of the analysis holds up really - Wasn't Matty out injured for practically the entirety of Ranieri's tenure? He didn't kick a ball in our title-winning season at the very least.

Definitely seems a popular player with managers when fit though.

Im sure he was fit to feature in the last few games, then got another injury in pre season which ruled him for a while, until he went on loan to Barnsley.

if he was training but wasn't even playing U23 games

Alright, calm down! I’d just like to see the lad get a chance to play football for someone and have a chance of enjoying some sort of football career again.

Just wondering if anyone knows how he is getting on.

I agree don't worry... He needs to leave this summer though. Given his age and longevity and to make as much money he can from the rest of his career then it would be best to leave now for a 2/3 year contract at a Championship club level like Kingy and Simpson did albeit kingy was loaned out to Huddersfield.

I’ve always said that the perception of a player always rises when that player is absent from the team. Especially in a period when the team is not winning games.

People often point to James being first pick in midfield when we first entered the Premier League. That coincided with a time when we were the worst team in the league for 28 games. In the 10 game run at the end: James started four of them and we won three. I won’t make comparisons with other midfielders who might have played when we won the league, or qualified for Europe, as others have already done so.

James has always been an average midfielder of limited potential. Top end Championship to mid table Premier League at best.

It’s really devastating for the player to have to overcome so many injuries, but the revisionism around his ability always makes me raise an eyebrow or two.

Any updates? How’s his fitness looking? Can’t recall seeing him in any preseason games?

Any chance he may go out on loan this season and play some football somewhere?

Coming a long nicely, ready to make his first appearance in 12 years in 2031

His contract runs out in 2021. He will be let go next summer. I dont dislike the guy and I wish him well but his last 3 years here have been a waste of money.

He will be 30 when he leaves us so I'm interested to see what level he will play at.

Didn't I read somewhere he is working on his coaching badges?

I wonder if the club use his injury as an example to new possible signings as some sort of sales pitch. Some kind of 'we look after our own', 'we even extended the contract of a player who was out with a long term injury'.

I know it would influence part of my decision if I was choosing a new club with very little between my options.

This whole 'LCFC family' image. Just a thought.

Spot on. How anybody can say he was better than Drinky is beyond me. Drinky was the best midfield player in the Championship & one of the best in the year we won the Prem.

The only reason he had a poor year in 14/15 was because pig-headed Pearson wouldn't pick him for some reason, despite the pathetic performances we were turning out throughout that winter.

Drinkwater started 16 games, only 4 less than James and the same number as King. He had more than enough chances to show he was a better option and didn't.

Shakey wanted it as he was following the Pearson way of looking after players, he wanted to show everyone that he had their back. Pearson allowed players to kick about longer than they really needed to. There was nothing wrong in doing what we did, especially when you hear about how brilliant he is with other players behind the scenes. The only question mark is the length of the deal, but then again we don't know the details of his contract. For all we know it could be heavily based around appearances and being fit.

I can see him packing it in when his contract is up. Not sure whether teams would be willing to take a gamble on him post covid with his fitness record or pay him the money he'd expect.

Pay as you play. Barnsley for one would probably jump at the chance, he was absolutely brilliant for them on loan prior to that new contract.

God I wish Squawka still had the stats from the championship, he dominated Drinkwater in almost every aspect. From Tackles to chances created, etc. When James wasn't in the team, we missed him more than any other midfielder and the results matched that.

He suffers from the same shite players like Mendy and often Praet gets. They don't do the Hollywood stuff so they don't get the glory.

King better... FML.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Drinkwater was voted in the top 3 players in the entire league that season.

King contributed much more to this club than James especially in the Premier League, I stand by that.
