It will be disappointing not to finish Top 4, even if Man City are banned. We can't afford any more slip ups otherwise we drop to 5th. Let's go to Bournemouth and get the 3 points. Then we reassess. Game by game.

If we win 3 including the Manure game then we are top 4 (probably 3rd). The future is in our hands. Beating 2 of Bournemouth, Sheffield and Spurs really isn't too much to ask for a top 4 team. We should beat all 3 and then at most a draw against Manure is enough.

Agree. 
 

Although the results haven’t looked great, we’ve actually been quite unlucky in most games. Dominated most of them. Legitimate shouts that we could’ve won all of them.

Playing ahead of the decision on the Man City ban sounds good to me. Without the ban we still need 3-6 more points I think, and even then Man Utd and Chelsea might have better finishes than us. 

 

But if we win on Sunday we are all but guaranteed 5th place. Arsenal, Burnley and Spurs couldn't finish above us, and Wolves and Sheffield would both have to take maximum points to finish ahead of us.

I'm not sure if this Merc article from yesterday has been posted elsewhere already but it states that it is possible for us to have secured qualification for the Champions League by Monday. Yes the scenarios we need listed here are mostly unlikely (especially Wolves losing at home to Everton) and we will be relying massively on the Man City ban being upheld, and of course not forgetting that we have to turn up on Sunday and take care of business ourselves! 

 

But the fact that it's possible that we may secure our place in this competition we've been desperate to qualify for with 3 games to spare shows that, despite bad performances in recent weeks, it's not all doom and gloom with regards to our position at the moment. Finishing 5th would still be somewhat disappointing given how far clear of this position we were in 2019 and we'd be lucky that this would be the only year (well possibly next season too if the Man City 2 year ban is upheld) that we would be offered this get-out-of-jail card by UEFA but we have to take every lucky break that comes our way to reach the UCL which is where we all want to be.

 

This article also implies that even if the other results don't go our way this weekend, then 2 wins from the next 2 from us should be enough to secure 5th. Chelsea then could just as easily drop points in their remaining fixtures as us so 4th would still be more than possible if we're required to finish there. It's very much still in our hands and with Vardy back amongst the goals I look forward to seeing how up to the task the players are

If four Premier League scorelines and a decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport go City's way between Saturday and Monday, they will be back in Europe's top competition

 

Leicester City could secure a place in the Champions League by Monday if results go their way this weekend.

City’s hopes of a return to Europe’s top competition were boosted on Wednesday night after Wolves suffered a last-gasp defeat at Sheffield United. It means City’s cushion inside the top five stands at seven points with four games remaining. And if four results and one court case go their way, they will be back in the Champions League in four days’ time.

 

Here’s what City need to happen.

Sheffield United v Chelsea – Saturday, July 11 – 5.30pm kick-off – City need Sheffield United to fail to win

Although it seems illogical with City chasing down Chelsea for a place in the top four, they need Frank Lampard’s side to at least get a draw at Bramall Lane to halt the Blades’ charge for fifth.

 

Wolves v Everton – Sunday, July 12 – 12pm kick-off – City need Wolves to lose

Back-to-back defeats have severely dented Wolves’ hopes of reaching the Champions League spots, and City will be hoping they fall to a third straight loss on Sunday.

Although City would need Nuno Espirito Santo’s side to lose to mathematically secure Champions League football, a draw would effectively be good enough, given the huge margin in goal difference.

Tottenham v Arsenal – Sunday, July 12 – 4.30pm kick-off – City need the sides to draw

To keep their hopes alive of wrapping up Champions League qualification by Monday, City need Sunday’s north London derby to finish all square.

That is unless Spurs fail to beat Bournemouth on Thursday night. If Jose Mourinho’s men don’t get the better of the Cherries, then City can cheer for a Tottenham victory against the Gunners.

 

Bournemouth v City – Sunday, July 12 – 7pm kick-off – City need to win

City need to do what they have never done before in the Premier League and beat Bournemouth away.

Although they defeated the Cherries when they last met in the Championship, none of City’s four top-flight trips to the Vitality Stadium have ended in victory.

Uefa v Manchester City – Monday, July 13 – City need Uefa’s ban to be upheld

The final piece of the jigsaw is the big one in many ways. Man City have appealed their two-year suspension from Uefa competitions for breaking financial rules, and after a hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), an outcome is expected on Monday.

If CAS decide to uphold Uefa’s decision, then fifth place in the Premier League becomes a Champions League spot.

If CAS rule that Man City’s appeal is successful, then fifth place becomes a Europa League spot again and Leicester will have been wishing they had cheered on Sheffield United against Chelsea two days earlier.

If we want to finish Top 4, and forget Man City's ban for now, then we need minimum 7 points from the next 3 games. And even then, we might still need a result on the final day against Man U.

Just seems bizarre that Guardiola would come out on two separate occasions and say they're confident. If you had any inkling that it could possibly be upheld, your public position would surely be along the lines of 'well we'll have to wait and see', 'we'll go with what the authorities decide', 'focus on our football' etc.

 

Guardiola has come out and made it clear they almost expect it to be overturned. That's not a good position for Manchester City to be in if they hadn't heard good things - in fact you'd be surprised if they don't already know the verdict themselves ahead of a press release Monday. The last thing you want is for your supporters to think they'll be fine, and then in actual fact the ban remains.

 

Personally I would be shocked if CAS didn't side with UEFA, we know it is very rare that CAS go against the governing bodies in these situations. That's why it's such a weird situation.

 

Can they go higher than CAS and drag this on into August and beyond?

There’s a belief their legal team could of done a bit better in presenting the information and as it’s been pointed out CAS generally are reluctant to go against governing bodies in cases like this.

 

I am not saying they won’t get it overturned by the way, anything can still happen. This is not accounting for UEFA making a total hash of presenting their case which I wouldn’t find hard to believe.

I think Man City are putting the bravado on to put the pressure on CAS. To get a 2 year ban and then for it to be completely removed would be a joke and seriously undermine UEFA.

Personally I'd prefer that Sheffield beat Chelsea. They aren't going to catch us unless we are truly, truly terrible but a sheff win would put us back in pole position for 3rd.

If we do make it 3rd/4th or 5th do we think we'll be having a National Lampoons European vacation tour around Central Europe?
This seasons comp started Sep 2019 do we think we'll be back in stadiums across all countries come this September, maybe we will, but getting 30k+ people in 1 place seems so far away right now sadly.
Making it will be good for the coffers but maybe not so much for footballing enjoyment.

Have you considered that CV19 and the UK's inept response to it might mean there are no fans at all, or English fans are banned from  travelling? It isn't going to  disappear from UK shores before the CL starts. The EU is not allowing travel from the USA because of it's high  numbers, do you really think  they'll let a load of Brits in who's govt has done an equally bad job of keeping it under control, in case they're infected.

I was thinking about this the other day regarding football as a whole. It was good for us to get a champions league campaign with fans etc in 16-17.

 

I feel for the Sheffield United who might miss out on potentially their only european tour in their lifefimes.

 

Or Wycombe fans who might miss out on ground hopping in potentially their only season in the second tier.

But travel is currently allowed between the UK and Spain etc...

 

And yes both the US and UK handled it poorly but what happened in March isn't really relevant now. It's about the rates now. The US is still increasing at a scary rate and the UK continues to decrease as it has done since the beginning of May. 

 

Corona is still alive in France, Germany, Spain also.

Certain media articles suggest 30% crowds in September with no away fans. Given the European competitions start in October, can’t see much of an increase unless some European countries situations are a lot better which would allow an away trip. 
 

It’s more likely the turn of the year when we’d have something of a return to some normality
