2. James Justin has proved to be a good right back - very sound defensively (e.g. in the last game against Manu). He isn't yet as good as Ricardo going forward but who in the League is?

Liverpool's right back did alright.

Great post PHG - now that the disappointment has eased a bit it’s nice to reflect on some of the positives.

Surely Cags deserves a mention? Until his rush of blood at Bournemouth he was an absolute revelation.

Onwards and upwards for next season, I think this crop of players has a lot more to give. Hopefully we can retain key players (please don’t sell Kel!!!) and make some shrewd acquisitions....

Am I the only one that's still unsure about Justin. He's got plenty of time to improve but he's not really that composed on the ball. He's solid defensively.

Thomas looks a real prospect - I'm really excited about him. I think he could give Robertson a run for his money on assists over the course of a season and he will get better defensively given time.

The disappointment of missing out on a Champions' League place will not easily subside, but every cloud has a silver lining, so let's consider some positives from the last nine games.

1. Iheanacho has really looked to be a good attacker, with a goal threat, who can complement Vardy next season. One of my main gripes against Brendan Rogers has been the way he either substitutes Kelechi or deselects him, when playing well. I am sure that Vardy is less likely to be crowded out when Kelechi is playing alongside. I felt a sharp pang of despair whenever I saw Dennis Praet coming on for Kelechi.  Brendan was replacing an attacker able to score goals with a midfielder who, whilst not a bad player, is unlikely ever to find the net.

2. James Justin has proved to be a good right back - very sound defensively (e.g. in the last game against Manu). He isn't yet as good as Ricardo going forward but who in the League is?

3. Luke Thomas is a real prospect who did not look out of his depth when brought in for some difficult games.

4. I have been a little underwhelmed by Youri T this season but I thought he played pretty well in the last games  (Is he  better when he and Maddison are not competing for the same space?)..

5. Gray looked a threat when coming on. He scored against SheffU and looked good against ManU - I really feel that next season could bring about the long awaited break-through.

Viewed as a whole it's been a good season. Has anyone else out there got other positive points to shatter the gloom?

I was all the way with you, until the highlighted. lol

I like your attitude and having good stab at this but the run in was a humiliating shambles.

Pathetic.  Truly pathetic.

hits the nail squarely on the head. EXTREMELY fearful for next season - as everyone who remembers Peter Taylor's time will also be.

The difference is that you could see Taylor pulling the team apart almost in slow motion.  The likes of Lee Marshal, Junior Lewis etc... It was obvious.  There was only one way to go and that was downhill fast.

This team has much better players which actually makes it all the more galling that they let themselves down so badly.

Exactly this. I'm confident that we could have got champions league with a fit Ricardo, Maddison, Chilwell and if Soyuncu hadn't got sent off vs Bournemouth. But it highlights our lack of squad depth and needs to be put right especially in defensive areas. I don't feel like the walls are tumbling and the players on the whole seem happy here, so I'd expect us to recover in time for the new season.

What Taylor did was try and overhaul our successful squad with players who were clearly not up to the level and vastly inexperienced. I'd only compare the situations if Rodgers does the same.

Well... he had better get something out of the first 5 games, or I will want his head on a platter.

I think people forget how bad we were under Puel. I don't think we've been anywhere near as bad as we were then.

Even on our bad run, we have always looked a threat offensively but were very soft defensively and that hurt us. I think getting our injured and suspended players back will help and adding a few reinforcements to the squad

The positives for me were:

1: we can easily switch to a back three when needed. Can see us playing that system next season against some of the bigger boys. Imagine it with 3 decent CB’s, Ricardo, Eduoard....

2. Luke Thomas. Will make the loss of Chilwell easier.

3. Tielemans looked a new man. Whether it was the security of another CB or no Maddison I don’t know.

4. Vardy winning golden boot - GOAT

5. a reality check that we’re not the finished article. We need to upgrade 6 players in our squad then we’ll regularly compete for top 4

Or it could be like the Pearson season where at the end of 2012/13 we had a terrible run, then the next season won the league.

im not saying we will win the league, but this isn’t that Taylor team. Junior Lewis etc... were woeful.

What I fear from this side is the lack of bottle and fight. When the going gets tough we crumble. Even against poor opposition. Would like to know how many points we took when we were behind in games. Rodgers seems to be one of those coaches that when it’s going well we look great and when it’s poor it’s absolute garbage. There’s no middle ground. Just how it was when he was at Liverpool.

Vardy showed he isn't done yet as some started to grumble he was. Telemann picked up a bit of form and hopefully can kick on again next season.

Thomas and Justin looked very promising.

When I mentioned the dreaded Peter Taylor I wasn't comparing the team at all - more the run of results at the end of the season. His run (after Wycombe) continued into the following season and took us down. Pearson's run (great escape) continued into the following season and won the league. Just hoping this dire run doesnt continue through! Someone said how good our good players are (and I absolutely agree) and said that the whole disappointment thing was because they had put us into such a magnificent position- and then proceeded to deflate us all (I agree there too - as must just about every City fan).

I've probably only seen one positive from the last 9 games and it's Thomas and the fact he actually has a good look up before he crosses the ball. However we don't want to push all pressure on him. People comparing him to Chilwell, lets not forget Chilwell is England's first choice left back and still one of the best left back's in the league.

I really don’t get the whole - we collapsed 20 years ago under Peter Taylor do its going to happen again.

BR is not Guardiola, but he’s a good coach and manager. It is inevitable that the experience of being knocked out of Top 4 will have knocked our confidence. We also have the Europa League to balance up with the domestic league. However, I am excited to see how the squad and coaching staff respond.

My view is that we have a fantastic crop of players and when we get another run together the confidence will return. We need some reinforcements and to keep key players and we’ll do well.

Not checked this but

3 of our 4 worst results this season (liverpool, man city & bournemouth) all changed after conceding penalties, and the other (spurs) following an own goal.

Makes it seem even more like a bottle job?

This is my concern we need someone with some backbone, some never say die attitude a believer in Foxes Never Quit on the pitch. We don't seem to have anyone like that, they're all 'nice guys'.
