Wing backs is just an awful system for retaining possession. You need to stretch the pitch, make it wider, have a balanced shape that uses up the space on the field to properly move it around. To both keep the ball and move it up the park. 

 

It just doesn't work with wingbacks. 

I think Wing backs can work, but more in a back 4 if you have one going forward, one staying back so you end up with a pseudo-three-at-the-back. Worked so well for us for most of last season. 

 

I think the problem with an ACTUAL back 3 with wing backs is that it leaves us with less players further up the pitch to keep possession of the ball. That's why it doesn't work in Rodgers' system.

By wing backs I do mean any system with 5atb.
