Underrated - The Prestige. Absolutely fantastic film that I don’t hear mentioned often at all.

It is on Netflix.

Watched that a few weeks ago as it happens - very good film. Christian Bale great as always.

The Prestige for underrated is a great call.

For overrated, the one that jumps to my mind is There Will Be Blood, for much the same reasons as @leicsmac said about No Country For Old Men. I went into that movie with high expectations and, after a promising start, it ultimately dragged to a conclusion I no longer cared about.

Also for overrated - The Death Of Stalin. Another that didn’t live up to the expectations I had of it because all the best jokes had been shown on the trailer.

I gave up on that before finishing, just couldn't get into it. On the Armando Ianucci flip side, I thought David Copperfield was brilliant.

Citizen Kane isn't rubbish though is it? It's not the most accessible film nor one for action junkies (nothing wrong with that btw) but its a good film.

My favourite is Disney's Robin Hood and my second favourite is Moana and my third favourite is O Brother, Where art thou?

I make no apologies.

Robin Hood and Little John running through the forest....

ps I remember Fight Club being amazing from when I was about 14. Bet its rubbish if I watch it back.

pps The first Matrix blew me away back in the day.

Both great films. The other Matrix films were overly long and a massive disappointment.

Another Brad Pitt film which was panned a little but I enjoyed was 12 Monkeys.  The ending is superb as it allows you to choose the ending depending which way you follow the story.

American History X is also a great film.

On Prime, a Danish film called The Hunt starring Mads Mikkelsen about how a lie from a spiteful child can ruin someones life.  Not so much under or overrated, more a little unknown but a great watch.

Birdman . Hyped by the critics and a few people whose judgement I trust told me I’d love it . WTF ?

The reason it was hyped up by the media/film industry was that it was a film made by the film industry for the film industry.

For the general public its just an 'ok' film

The Prestige is one of my favourite films and it's amazing how many people I recommend it to that haven't even heard of it.

It's difficult to say what's underrated, for example, The Ninth Gate and Dark City are two objectively mediocre films that I will happily watch again and again.  Also, it was critically acclaimed but not seen by loads of people, but Blade Runner 2049 is exceptional and needs more praise.

Again with overrated, I remember being sat in a cinema watching Shaun of the Dead and don't recall even smirking.  This is particularly annoying when sat in a theatre full of people howling with laughter. Clearly an example of people loving something that I detested.  Bit easier to judge comedies, as if people say it's great, and I don't laugh then I clearly think it's overrated.

But in the spirit of the thread, and to start a discussion, Apocalypse Now is a drawn out bore fest.

No Country For Old Men is a great film and better the third and fourth time you watch it. Everyone has different tastes in films. I hated the film fight club. I thought Avatar was excellent in the cinema saw it twice. Misery is a great film.

Under rated

The Prestige - By far Nolans best film for my money, I've seen it maybe 6 times now and it still blows me away every time and I pick up on little clues along the way I'd not noticed before.

Moon - maybe the best (at least my favourite) Sci fi film of the last 20 years, along with Arrival (also vastly under rated).

Predator 2 - one of my favourite action Sci fi films and never gets a mention, Danny Glover is brilliantly over the top.

Over rated

Dances with smurfs, sorry I mean Avatar.

Most the Marvel films, I really enjoy them but I don't think they're really as good as most people make out and I get burnt out with them if I watch more than 1 every 6 months or so, a bit like ubisoft open world games, copy and paste and hope nobody notices but still fun.

The fast and the furious films. Granted I've only ever seen 2 but they were both rubbish and I can't imagine they got much better. The first one was a Point Break remake but cars instead of surfboards and I never hear people say that, don't get them at all.

Overrated: Shawshank Redemption - It is a great film, but I don't think it deserves to be the highest rated film on IMDB, not even top 10 of all films IMO.

Underrated: Too many out there, over the years I've watched many good films on Netflix that don't have a well known cast or huge production budget. A few off the top of my head are; The Invitation, Creep and The Autosy of Jane Doe.

All christopher nolan films except Dunkirk. Just tries to over complicate a movie!

Memento ? Complicated ? Told in a reverse time line with B/W and colour scenes to let you know where you are . What’s overcomplicated about that ?😂

All Tarantino films are overrated (except Jackie Brown)

I've never understood what anyone sees in James Bond.  The most recent crop are like a 90 minute advert for Aston Martin/Sony/Tom Ford/etc.

I'm not saying it's crap, but why do so many people get such a boner for Goodfellas?

Goodfellas is an amazing film, probably my favourite. I suppose you have to be into the genre though
