Most franchise films are pretty tedious to me.

Chinatown is one that I can never finish. I always fall asleep and it's strange as it's my sort of film.

The Prestige is overrated for me, given the brother in law never stops banging on about it! And Citizen Kane is a masterpiece!

I've not seen any LOTR films but I'm gonna say they're way overrated 😅

On Prime, a Danish film called The Hunt starring Mads Mikkelsen about how a lie from a spiteful child can ruin someones life.  Not so much under or overrated, more a little unknown but a great watch.

I'm no film buff, but it's always the quiet little films i know nothing about that can have a bigger impact. This was excellent.

I saw recently, on a vaguely nordic theme, the wife with Glenn Close. Great story and great acting.  Manchester by the sea. Saw midnight cowboy recently. Those films that take you into a slow, seedy world.

Oh and Crocodile Dundee. Brilliant.

Citizen Kane isn't rubbish though is it? It's not the most accessible film nor one for action junkies (nothing wrong with that btw) but its a good film.

My favourite is Disney's Robin Hood and my second favourite is Moana and my third favourite is O Brother, Where art thou?

I make no apologies.

Robin Hood and Little John running through the forest....

Agreed, the chilled out Rooster who appears throughout the film is one of my favourite Disney characters of all time. The tune he whistles at the start of the film is an absolute mare to get out of your head for days after lol

Underrated - Ill go for Duel, I think was Spielbergs first gig at directing but was quickly overshadowed by Jaws so not many people I speak to have seen or heard of it but it's a great watch and still to this day able to get me on edge even though its just a truck lol

Goodfellas is an amazing film, probably my favourite. I suppose you have to be into the genre though

It's a solid, decent film.  I thought it was great when it first came out.  I watched it again recently (having not seen it for probably 20 years) & thinking "not as good as I remember it being".

Each time I watch The Godfather I & II, Once Upon A Time in America - they get better with each viewing.

In that genre.  Millers Crossing is what I could possibly consider 'underrated'.  Its not the greatest film of all time, but far too many people have not seen it or have even heard of it

Duel, one of Spielberg's first movies.  Released in 1971, just a salesman and a moody truck driver in the desert. Great tension from a simple premise. Doesn't get the love it deserves imo.

Some kind soul has stuck the whole movie on YT.

Also, over rated: La La Land

Under rated: The Founder

Over rated: The Twilight Saga (s)

Under rated (appreciated): Let the Right One In.

Let the Right One In is a masterpiece if you haven't had the opportunity to watch it yet 👌

Watched requiem of a dream recently although a strong message didn’t think it was as goof as the ratings personally.

That's the most deflated I've ever felt after a film (alongside Ghost and the scene with Nick Cave's Into my Arms in About Time )

I genuinely felt awful for a few days afterwards.

Once upon a time in Hollywood Overrated and pointless.

Probably the worst film I've seen in the last five years.

Entirely a vehicle for Tarantino to pretend he's directed Sharon Tate. Pitt and Di Caprio should have made for a ****ing awesome film.

The final scene was garbage also. If that was directed by anyone other than Tarantino it wouldn't have passed muster.

if you haven't yet watched a film called Wild Rosie, it's brilliant. it sounds ropey as hell - a scottish girl, bought up on the wrong side of the tracks trying to be a country and western singer....

but it's genuinely great!!

Overrated: Fargo - witless, tedious and predictable. But it's part of the Cohen Brothers canon - so that's ok. (Braces for the onslaught)

Underrated: Cloud Atlas, State of Grace (Gary Oldman is superb).

Underrated film - City of God (2002) - never really gets much of a mention but such a brilliant film. I remember being pi**ed off when I was made to watch it as it was subtitles, how wrong I was though it is a masterpiece.

Not sure if it's available to stream anywhere but I'm sure you can rent it on Prime.

Overrated - Have to agree with the marvel films, watched a few, never got the hype personally.

I think we have different likes in movies. For me, apart from Ladybird, the best film in the past decade!

For me, nearly all movies much over two hours are overrated - Schindler's List a particular exception.

Of recent films, Greed is, for me, underrated (this isn't the story of Sir Philip Green(!))

Following on from the Favourite Openings and Endings thread...

What films do you think are overhyped or do not get the credit they deserve?

I'll kick off with Citizen Kane being overrated. I fully appreciate that it's ground breaking cinema and is a sort of Beatles of film in paving the way for future directors and story arc etc, but it's so slow. I'd like to think that's not because I'm used to Hollywood blockbusters, as they are far from my cup of tea, two of my favourite films ever in the The Godfather and Godfather Part II could be equally labelled as slow, but I personally didn't find that the case. It's also not just an age thing, as I think there are/were better films in that era. I have a dislike of Orson Welles too, so that probably exacerbates matters.

Avatar - big budget, great special effects, poor film.

As for underrated - 12 Angry Men is not nearly well known enough. It does appear fairly high on IMDb and similar lists, but I still don't think it's in the public consciousness as a whole. Fully recommend it to anybody who's never seen it.

For a more modern shout, I've always thought that Shutter Island was a much better film than Inception in terms of Di Caprio films from that year.

Avatars is Dances With Wolves in space, would never have amounted to anything if it hadn't been the first of the new wave of awful 3D movies.

Cutthroat Island bombed massively, it's one of the all time turkeys, but it's actually a fun afternoon family matinee style film, nothing wrong with it. Pirates of the Caribbean however, awful attempt to do The Secret of Monkey Island.

Titanic also gets on my nerves, it's just massively dumb! "I'll never let you go!"

Oooopsie!

You're wrong about Citizen Kane though. It's a masterclass.

Nightcrawler is a decent shout for an underrrated film.   Larry Bloom's descent into madness and depravity was cool.   It is on Netflix now.
