Golden Goal: Steve Claridge for Leicester v Manchester United (1996)

The snobbery towards Martin O’Neill’s Leicester meant that this glorious team goal was criminally underappreciated

Foxes are Premiership over achievers

Research shows that the best predictor of a club's success is the amount paid out in wages.  But, of course, it is not a perfect relationship and some clubs manage to punch above their weight.

Leicester City are the biggest over achievers in the Premier League, followed by West Ham United and then Manchester City.   Aston Villa come in fourth.

The positive points differential above expected points based on wages is 12 for Leicester City, 10 for West Ham and nine for Manchester City.

Manchester City's wage bill was £351m for 2019/20 more than double that paid by Leicester.   Liverpool had the second highest wage bill at £326m.

Sheffield United, Liverpool and then Arsenal were the biggest under achievers.   For the Blades the gap was 20 points, 10 for Liverpool and nine for Arsenal.  Crystal Palace were next in line on eight.  It should be noted that Liverpool were the highest over achievers when they won the Premier League last year.

Tottenham Hotspur are the only club who have performed exactly as they should have done according to their wage bill.

Football finance guru Kieran Maguire emphasised that there were factors at work other than wages: 'Leicester and Manchester City fly under the radar in terms of their use of data analysis.  When Leicester signed N'Golo Kante his stats were superb, yet they could still buy him for a modest fee.   Manchester City have now recruited an astrophysicist to work in their data analytics.  Clubs have to be spending smarter, not just spending higher.#

The snobbery towards us back then also meant that the game against Arsenal where we came from behind twice in injury time to draw 3-3 is only ever remembered in the media for Bergkamp's hattrick. We were under the radar back then and got to 3 cup finals, winning 2 of them. We're still under the radar now and doing pretty well out of it. Less media attention means less pressure on the team. And that's showing on the pitch.

TBF it is one of the best hattricks you will ever see.  We were also massively outplayed for 88 minutes of that game yet still managed to get a 3-3 draw.

Not sure what the universe has to do with football, but it seems to be working for Man City

Arguably that makes it even more impressive and memorable that we got anything out of the game

I don't disagree.  One of the best nights at Filbo for me.  When Walshies goal went in in the net it was proper scenes from the kop.  Absolute madness!

I am not sure that non Leicester fans would see it the same though.  The hattrick will still be the thing that stands out most from the game.

It isn't a financially fair playing field, it isn't right.

The most popular clubs have had it their own way for decades now, there needs to be a rebalance and fair financial distribution going forward, lets see if UEFA have any balls. Coefficient shouldn't exist, should be the luck of the draw.

I was there that night, and other than the equaliser and the scenes in the stands afterwards, I remember more about Bergkamps hat trick than I do about our performance in the game

Someone's been reading Foxestalk

Leicester fans with astonishing comments after losing 4-2 to Newcastle United

Leicester fans have been keen to talk about what they watched on Friday night.

However, I doubt very much whether Brendan Rodgers and his players will be wanting to listen / read what they have to say.

Some Quite astonishing comments (see below) from the Leicester fans, leading me to have to actually check the Premier League table and who is playing in the FA Cup final next weekend.

The odd voice or reason but the over the top, often vicious, comments are intriguing, especially when you are looking from the outside.

Leicester are playing in the FA Cup final and are currently fourth in the Premier League with three games to go, five points clear of West Ham who have a match in hand.

Newcastle had won four of twenty five games (all competitions) before Friday night, Leicester fans had seen their team lose only four of their last twenty four PL matches.

Indeed, in their last nine games (all competitions), Leicester had won six and drawn one, only losing two.

Leicester fans commenting via their Foxes Talk message board:

‘Rodgers has been schooled by Bruce. Rodgers out, Bruce in!’

‘First time I’ve ever been embarrassed to call myself a Leicester fan.’

‘About 5 players starting tonight that I wouldn’t be sorry to sell in the summer.

Most talented team we have ever had but they have absolutely nothing about them. Fancy pants Instagram posers the lot of them.’

‘I hate losing. However, it happens sometimes. I absolutely hate losing when we do so because we lack effort and application. It’s a cliche but we didn’t show up today. It was a cowardly performance.’

‘Sometimes you just come up against a team too good, with a manager who’s too smart, and a desire for 16th place that’s just too much to match.’

‘That was a f.cking disgusting performance.

‘I’ve been saying for a while now that fans should not expect players to share the same heart as we do for our club. We saw that tonight. All of us would have played selflessly and put our bodies on the line and risked not playing at Wembley to put a crucial three points on the board tonight. What we saw instead was a bunch of employees in our colours looking not to put too much in just in case they might miss out next week. There were no guts tonight.’

‘I did not enjoy that.’

‘Another 5 minutes and we’d have had them.’

‘Absolutely gross. That just shows exactly what we are, pretenders. When it comes to the crunch, we never, ever turn up.’

‘Embarrassing. Disgraceful. Disgusting.

That’s Champions League football gone. Again.

Shameful.’

‘If Evans is out until after after FA Cup final we might as well wrap the season now and not bother getting on the coach. That is all.’

‘We’re Leicester, not Arsenal, and this is the Premier League where anybody can beat anybody. We have no right to expect. Having said that, we were sh.t.’

‘Should give the under 23s the chance to play at Wembley and drop this shower.’

‘Absolute horror show from the team tonight especially Ndidi and Soyuncu.

Bottling it again and Rogers should have gone 433 after 10 minutes. Total bottle job from him too.’

‘Maddison is a disgrace, get in your Lamborghini and p.ss off to Coventry.’

‘So disappointing!Showed disrespect to Newcastle and they punished us!’

‘I might be in a minority but I would like to see the back of many if that were to happen again. Couldn’t give a toss if it drops us down the table. 5th means nothing. Europa League is a waste of time and resources.’

‘Angriest I’ve been during a game in ages. Made Newcastle(!) look like world beaters.’

‘Vardy, when you will start scoring ? Probably we need new “vardy” because existing is old guy.’

‘Poor showing for 80 minutes.

Perez made the difference.

Some major overreactions in the match tread.

We’ll go again, just a cr.p night at the office with a bit of on-field game management missing.

Maddison, Ricardo and Vardy don’t look right though.’

‘The thing is as much as I’d love to finish top 4, this side has shown time and time again that when the sh.t hits the fan we crumble.

It’d be great to be called a European club and all that, but is there any point if you’re just going to throw it all away when the going gets tough?’

Is that article gaining advertising revenue? Are our angry and emotional denunciations making someone money? We need a cut. If people are making money on all the thoughtless shit I spout I’ll be ****ing fuming.

@Mark you should stop asking for donations and start demanding an advertising cut when other websites use your content, mate. Match threads could make a tidy sum.

I've said before that our matchday threads must be entertaining as hell for neutrals. It's essentially Paddy Power's fan denial section on acid.

I note a lot of the pundits constantly banging on about last season have gone silent about us "bottling" after that win

I think the Sky mantra is if nothing not nice to say, don't say anything

I find the majority of pundits in mainstream media just say the same media accepted soundbites regarding Leicester, they don't actually have much insight at all, it is very frustrating to watch.

I feel that because the majority of the pundits, or co commentators are almost always from a greedy 6 club, they don't have much interest or knowledge about a less greedy clubs unless, they either have some affinity for them, or played for them.

Pundits like Jamie Redknapp, haven't got a clue about Leicester, where as Leon Osman I always find informative if I had to give examples.
