The "do they mean us?" thread pt 3

I genuinely don't remember Guaita making a save before Nacho's worldie. At which point the gaps appeared due to Palace actually trying to score.

I just don't think we're at Chelsea's level just yet. It's not that I don't think we can win, but if both teams are at their best, I'd fancy Chelsea to win 9/10. I'd love us to go out and be brave and take the game to them, I think they look at their shakiest when the other team is putting their defenders under pressure. I just can't see us ever putting that kind of pressure on a team with this formation.

I was massively impressed with just how good guaita was. Always in thee right place to make it look easy because he read the game so well imo.

Probably deserves its own thread that. Most salient is that he confirms who out targets are and who’s in line for a new contract:

“A place in next season’s Champions League will enhance the manager’s spending power, with targets including Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare, Atalanta left-back Robin Gosens and Celtic forward Odsonne Edouard, while key players such as Youri Tielemans, Wilfred Ndidi and Caglar Soyuncu will be in line for updated contracts.”

If that is what happens this summer it will go down as one of our best in recent history!

I was trying to figure out where to post that because of the amount of topics it covers lol

Looks like we could have a brilliant summer lined up

I wouldn't class it as a 'Windfall' - it's not really unexpected when you consider we've been in the top 4 since September 2019 except for one week which you could argue was the unexpected.

It's been well earned!

Very encouraging!

But without wishing to appear greedy, entitled or profligate, we surely need another CB too if 'three at the back' is to be used fairly regularly, and if we want the flexibility to play or switch to 4-2-3-1, then we also need a right-sided AM. Five signings?

Shame that our targets have been outed alerting rivals. No doubt the usual suspects in Everton, West Ham and the London Reds and Whites will be linked whilst Sky 'experts' tout our stars to their favourites.

If we sign a box to box midfielder, a striker and a specialist wing back and don't go anywhere near an actual winger then we're going to need to get a LOT better at breaking teams down in a 352.

I hope Brendan has been studying Gasperini.

As well as we are currently doing j really don't wanna see a permanent 352 next season. There's no room for Barnes in that system and we're gonna struggle to break teams down. We really need a RW who will get G+A.

We already are loads better at breaking teams down in a 352 though.

Look at how many goals we’ve scored lately.

We've improved but we still leave a lot to be desired.

Palace was a great example of this, yes we won and I'm obviously thrilled we did, but we struggled to create that much of note. There were times the lack of width was so embarrassing we were all swamped in the middle of the park with Palace lapping it up.

Individual brilliance won that game for us, not really a sound tactical approach.

I joke about Atalanta but they are a great example of how free scoring a 352 can be when played correctly and recruiting two of their wing backs over consecutive summers would be great business if we want to play that way. But we've got to do a lot better at it if we do.

I think Gosen would give us a lot more down the left, goals and assists, more natural width and penetration.

We look a little lobside at the moment.

I think it will be horse for course, Rodgers likes to flip formations.

I guess I should have said.

It will be well earned rather than a windfall.

He also goes on to say that with CL qualification we may be able to go about said business without selling any key players (although the likes of Hamza will probably go):

“By securing a place in Europe’s elite competition, Rodgers will be able to retain the core of his squad and potentially avoid the Leicester policy of one major sale per summer.“

I shall forever be partly traumatised by the most glorious event in our history. The day before the 2015/16 season started I thought I'd have a flutter on us winning the league, as I thought 'just imagine if we went through next season like we finished the last!'. I opened an account with an online bookie, put £5 in the box next to those ridiculous odds and the something happened. Some logical thinking, "Can I really afford to throw £5 in the gutter like this?", "This is stupid!". And so I didn't press click. Absolutely gutted! To this day! I keep fantasising about going back wishing I could add just one more thought to the equation, "But you play the lottery and the odds are shit. So this is better. Go for it!". How do I stop this eternal lament?!

One thing I can say for sure about playing Chelsea is that, since the day we outclassed them in the title season to give Mourinho his P45, we only seem to turn up against them when we play the coiled spring approach and hit them on the counter. Smash and grab 0-1 at their place springs to mind.

When we try to take the game too them it can be an ugly thing to watch, not least because they're very good at punishing mistakes - I often think back to the 1-1 where Wilf made amends after one lame pass resulted in them scoring.

Our record against them is decent but that doesn't mean it's not gonna be a nervy one to watch. Fully expecting us to set up as the 'away' team in the final, and it's gonna take a full-blooded performance from Caglar, Wes and Jonny to come out on top.

EDIT - I realise this comment makes no real sense in the context of this thread. I was responding to conversations from Wednesday I had open in an old tab on my phone. Oops. lol

Don't worry about it dude.  Fate intervened.

You would have blown it all by now on hookers and drugs, given yourself a severe load of STDs and would be living life as crackhead.
