What a football player. Given all the technically gifted players we are lucky to have at our disposal at the moment, Muzzy wouldn't look out of place. Very good footballer. Nice guy too.

As great as he was, I'm glad when our next anniversary DVD comes out the highlight won't be signing Muzzy Izzet from Chelsea.

Definitely Muzzy.

 

It was. I was surprised by the sentence - "It was still a tight affair on the final day as O'Neill's men headed to Watford. They needed a win and the man to deliver it was Izzet, netting a rare headed goal at Vicarage Road - his first for Leicester."

 

That diving one on the run against Derby is one of my favourites. With packed defences these days it's rare to see that type of goal.

Izzet used to time his runs perfectly. When you had the likes of Guppy who could cross the ball superbly with either foot too we were always a threat in that area.

When I was bout 8 I went to see the Leicester players off onto the coach before an away game at Coventry. I lived near Belfast (Army dad) at the time and that was as close as I'd been to a game in my recent memory. I got a few autographs and met a very curt Martin O'Neill. When I wished Muzzy good luck he asked if I had tickets to the game. When we said no he told us to wait right there before coming back half hour later with tickets for me and my dad. We drew 0-0 but I considered that one of the best football memories of my life. I love Muzzy to bits.

I think when you watch our games from the O'Neill era back you really see such a contrasting style and identity from each team that really has been lost a bit in the modern era.

 

No doubt the football is technically much superior, but the playing out from the back tika taka leads to many dreadful matches too. So many big games now lack what they did back then.

My first real Leicester hero when I was a kid - an exciting, skillful, exuberant player who was easy to idolise.

 

Had the good fortune to have him be the special guest at the Oadby Owls football awards one year where he couldn't have been more gracious - still got his autograph knocking around somewhere.

That goal against Watford  was fabulous.

One of the greatest to pull on our shirt. Imagine the bits he’d be doing in a midfield with Tielemans and Wilf.

Many years ago, after he had retired ( just) I used to work in the pediatric intensive care unit at the Royal. It was made known to Muzzy that there was a teenage girl who had just been diagnosed with an incurable brain tumor who was one of his biggest fans. Muzzy came to visit her and  they quickly became good friends. He visit on so many occasions and He would stay for hours and just sit with her and be there. They would text back and forth many times a day. He truly took her to heart and was at her funeral.

 

 

Muzzy wasn’t just a top class fella on the pitch, he was just as classy off of it too. He didn’t have to do any of that.

Izzet, Lennon, and Savage were the second highest paid midfielders combined in the division at that time I’m led to believe 90k a week second only to Man Utd

That wasn't how I remember it. I came away thinking this lad that no one had ever heard of was the only bright spark of a grim day and far too good for us. I expected him to get in his car and head straight back down the M1. 

 

Really chuffed to have signed him permanently and I think Chelsea thought they'd ripped us off (800k).

 

Unforgettable eventhough his wages nearly bankrupted us in 2002.

Do think out of all the players we had in them glory days the players who would fit in well in a team like ours in the modern game would be izzet, guppy and Parker.

Always wondered if he regretting going Birmingham, without those 26 apps he would have been a one club man as he never made the pitch at Chelsea.

 

Lennon & Izzet were a prefect pair, such amazing memories.

Whilst we are undoubtedly enjoying a golden period, the squads O’Neill put together were extremely good. Many would easily be good enough to get into our match day squad and would play regularly. Muzzy is a great example.
