He was a very very old man.

 

Whilst I'm not too fond of the idea of monarchy, it is sad for his poor missus, who is also very old and appears to still be fairly compos mentis for a lady of her age, and also for his family.

I love the Queen being referred to as his 'poor old missus'. Don't know why that tickled me. One is amused

I'm not a massive royalist but this is still gutting. 

 

Its still someone's Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grand Father. 

 

He fought in the war and has been an unbelievable aid to his wife for 73 years. His early years were fascinating and he is a very interesting man. It's definitely worth 30 minutes of your time to read up about him if you are not aware of  his early years.

Fought all the way through the 2nd world war in some of the most dangerous naval theatres.

Didn't really think much of the man either way but feel for his wife of 70 odd years. Queen or not, she's lost her husband.

My thoughts are with the Queen who is today just an old lady who has lost her husband of 70 odd years.

Quite sad about this personally. 

 

I was a DofE volunteer leader for 11 years and I loved everything about it. I've always loved the idea of public service to young people, helping in my small way to bring something positive to young people in my small part of the world.

 

In 2013 I was invited to be a 'Marshall' for a DofE Gold Award ceremony at St James Palace. 400 young people getting their awards; about 80 of them per room and I was in charge of 20 of them in my corner, the first corner. My task was given to me by the "room officer", who told me that "The Duke" would walk in and talk to him, then walk right up to my group of people. I was just to stand there and not embarrass myself, which was a hard enough task.

 

So then the time comes, HRH Prince ****ing Philip walks in, the most famous person I've ever seen (apart from that time Roy Cropper from Coronation Street sat in front of me at Filbert Street). The "room officer" walks up to greet him, but one of Philip's helpers reaches him first to tell him something. And so Prince Philip turns to the first person he sees in the room - ME.

 

AND THEN HE WALKS UP TO ME AND STARTS TALKING TO ME!!

 

I don't remember much about the conversation as I was trying not to make a tit of myself. I do remember him asking if I had done the award myself, which I had, and then if I had any youngsters getting their award - we had 7 in the other side of the room. It was a brief conversation but I found him really kind, curious and courteous to this random member of the public. He moved on quickly to my section of young people and asked them all about their experience, then quickly moved on. He spent a full 12 minutes in the room before moving onto the next group.

 

There'll be people desperate to make his death about republicanism, about his occasional racist gaffes or whatever they want. I'm not particularly a royalist, but the fact he was still doing that, ever day, at the age of 94 and with such enthusiasm... I just feel he was a seriously impressive person, and those few minutes I will honestly cherish forever.

 

RIP Philip.

It's amazing (yet hardly surprising) just how ready all the news site were for this. Shed loads of ready prepared articles and obituaries. Somebody must have been sat there just waiting to press "publish" for a couple of years now
