I didn't "meet" him but was in his presence once. Family friends work in the royal household. I'm not sad but I feel some sadness, just mostly for the family and obviously the fact the Queen must just feel like she's getting it on all sides right now.

It's amazing (yet hardly surprising) just how ready all the news site were for this. She'd loads of ready prepared articles and obituaries. Somebody must have been sat there just waiting to press "publish" for a couple of years now

Newspapers and media outlets have lots of obit material lined up for those of a certain age so they can react quickly.

Broadcaster/press usually have obits prepared for practically everyone, no matter the age, just in case. Quite often they get published accidentally, and the alleged deceased has to make a Pythonesque statement that they're not quite dead yet.

Listened to a podcast not long ago and they interviewed a person regarding it as there job was to write them. Its something crazy like everyone over the age of 60 in the public eye has one prepared and they are just added to if anything changes.

Must be quite morbid being the person responsible for writing obituaries for people who are still alive

They also do practice runs for them in the news studio.

I heard that when Diana died a cleaner walked on the back of the set because she thought it was a rehearsal for a royal dying, not the actual thing.

My favourite Prince Philip anecdote was when he was onboard the royal train headed for Balmoral. The line was blocked by snowfall and so the train had to make an unscheduled stop at a remote train station. The station master, unprepared for this arrival did his best to welcome the Prince, but the cranky Duke was not so amused. The station master apparently said "Your Royal Highness, if you'd like to follow me I will entertain you". To which Phillip responded "what are you? A fcucking juggler?"

lol

One of my tutors at uni, their first job in the press was writing obituaries for a national paper. The first one he had to look at was for George Best, this was in something like 1995 - his response was something like “**** off, when did he die?!” - not knowing that they regularly just keep certain obits ticking over for famous people. The news room was in hysterics apparently.

Exactly this.

A lot of very famous celebrities and people in the public eye will have obituaries ready to be published at a moments notice, they're also updated very regularly.

For anyone who saw it, I thought the BBC newsreader who broke the news did a superb job (Martine Croxall of Hinckley and formerly of RL and EMT). What a story to break.

ITV one was the most dramatic. You'd be wondering what terrible thing had happened for about 15 seconds.

I have to confess not a royalist and not really a big fan of his. But thoughts for the queen not nice to lose a husband whose been by your side for so long. I'll thank him for his heroics during the second world war.

Jesus wept.

"We are bringing you an announcement from the royal household....

....

...we have received a significant statement....

.....

....

....it reads...

...

...it is with deep sorrow, that HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN.....

....

...

...announces the death of her husband"

Social media is the fvcking worst when stuff like this happens.

Need to log off for a couple of days to maintain a semblance of faith in our doomed species.
