After our Premier League win, which was beyond the realm of what we might have thought possible, is it a good idea to lift the fantasy stakes a bar higher and hope for the European Cup over the next decade or two? If we were to win that perhaps THEN we can talk about being kings of the Midlands based on overall honours not just recent history.

I remember seeing ‘pride of the midlands’ car badges when going to a skeggy which shows a person wearing a midland football shirt pissing on other midland football shirts on the floor. I remember seeing the Leicester one and at this time we were league one or championship and thinking we were so far off being the best team from the midlands!!

Look at how far we have come!!

Always makes me laugh on these review vids/ pics you see online it’s almost a given that Villa or Wolves are ‘the biggest club in the Midlands’.

Wish people would stop living in the past. No way would I swap our club for any other in this current era.

Think I’d have Notts County instead of Oxford in that list?

Currently battling with Chesterfield for 7th position in Midlands league 2! They are guaranteed to finish above Alfreton Town though.

Man City have spent probably the best part of a billion over the last decade and have only just gotten into a CL final. There’s no harm in being ambitious but we’ve only qualified for the CL once and have thrown one good opportunity to get into again already. We have to regularly qualify for European competition before entertaining that sort of talk.

Winning domestic cups and going deep into the Europa should be out short-medium term goals.

The Midlands used to be packed with Top Flight teams and we were persistently beneath most of them.

If you are old enough to remember Star Soccer on ITV, with commentary by Hugh Johns, you'll know what I mean.

The Midlands is now a relative footballing backwater and we have consistently been the best in recent years:

This season - us

Last season - us

2018/19 - 2nd (9th in PL Wolves No1 in 7th)

2017/18 - us

2016/17 - 2nd (12th in PL, WBA No1 in 10th)

2015/16 - us :scarf:

Not too shabby, is it?

The majority of those clubs have declined and been pretty awful in the Premier League era, all the clubs there apart from us have 3 major trophies combined in that time, we also have 3.

Would anyone want that again? I’m not so sure in a way, would be enjoyable for obvious reasons but less local competition can’t be a bad thing.

Just thought it’s worth celebrating another season as Kings of the Midlands!

In the midlands we have about 10 decent sized clubs who are all very similar in terms of size and supporter base. Whilst others have had European Cups and Fa Cups, we have often been left behind.

Fot the second season in a row we are the undisputed Kings of the Midlands.
 2020/21 below.

1. Leicester

2.Aston Villa

3. Wolves

4.WBA

5. Stoke

6. Coventry

7. Forest

8. Birmingham City

9. Derby

10. Peterborough

11. Lincoln

12. Oxford

No doubt whatsoever we are now king of the midlands but judging by the quality of the teams we are competing against now, i think our aspirations are now way beyond this ambition.

Almost the equivalent of us being voted the best team in Leicestershire..! :D

Oxford? I'm not sure that is in the Midlands.

Nope. Neither is Cambridge, which is just as far.

IMHO, the 'midlands' stops at/after Northampton to the south, and Mansfield/Lincoln to the north.  Then there's Peterborough to the east and Wolverhampton (and Stoke) to the west.

(EDIT: Where the line is drawn around Birmingham, I'm not sure - do we include Warwick/Leamington?)

Of course you’re right. Or we could just shock the world again by being the most rank outsiders to win it! I did say fantasy stakes!

Logistically nice for away days.

Better an hour drive than a trek to Soton or Sunderland.

Before this period, we hadn't finished as the highest Midlands club for 55 years.... its a significant run!

The current crop of pundits come from the era when those two probably did have the highest prestige. Not sure why Wolves deserve that status. Seems that our East Midlands ex-rivals have dropped off the radar for now eventhough they still see themselves as relevant. Perhaps it will change with the emergence of the next generation of pundits.
