The bizarre terrace song from the 60's/early 70's - Saying Goodbye To His Horse? Which went something like:.                                                              To his horse, to his horse,.                         He was saying goodbye to his horse.     And has he was saying goodbye to his horse he was saying goodbye to his horse.

I have heard of this one and always wondered what the story behind it was. Remember some old boys singing it at the back of the Kop once about 10 years ago.

Remember it well. Not sure where it came from though. Another was chips and beans on a tray on a tray.

yes I've definitely heard it but I thought it was Goodnight horse . It was regularly sung by Chelsea fans in the shed end back in the 70s

I remember it from the 70s.

It was to the tune of "Leicester score, Leicester score, when you get one you'll get more....." wasn't it?

Another weird one from the time was " My dad knows Bill Smith,  Bill Smith knows my dad  ....." to Onward Christian Soldiers!

Never heard it at a football match but heard it sung by a group of Scots rugby fans at Murrayfield in 1987. Irritating as feck.

For what it's worth, (which is not a lot!) that was originally sung as "Lloyd George Knows my Father, Father knows Lloyd George", though I'm not sure where or when.

Oh yes, you're right!

Rose coloured specs and all that, but back in the day it seemed like there were more witty, spontaneous, sometimes random just for the fun (eg To His Horse)  and topical chants. (Obviously some unpleasant ones too).

Never heard of that one.

First chant I ever heard at my first ever game was "in your grimsby slums, you look in the bin to find something to eat, you find a dead dog and you think it's a treat, in your grimsby slums"

Something like that anyway.  My 12 year old self thought that was the funniest thing ever.

Always used to get an airing in The Turnstile (The pub, not the entry to the game).

I was once informed it was to do with a trip to The Old Den (Millwall) and they used to parade a horse around the game prematch, the rumour was someone in the away end fed the horse something on its was around the ground leading to the horses demise.

I have no idea if there is any truth to this story, or I was told this as a young lad by some pissed up old bloke full of crap, but that was the story I was told.
