Had a bit of a drought in the national side after the Vardy/Maguire period but seeing some strong performances from our English contingent.

Will always be an uphill battle against the "big 6" bias but reasons to be optimistic:

Maddison

Barnes

Justin

Dewsbury-Hall

Thomas

Lookman (outside shot if Nigeria switch doesn't happen)

Potentially more in the pipeline

Who do you think will get the call-up in the coming years?

Maddison for the spring internationals if he can keep his current form up. More likely to play in one of the friendlies

Justin to go to the world cup if can get fit to be playing regularly towards the end of this season then get a good pre season behind him. Chillwell won't be back and Shaw could be out of favour if he can't get back into the Man utd team, so there is an opportunity at left back.

I think Justin was on the cusp of a call-up before his injury. Someone who can perform so well in so many different positions and systems will be invaluable to Southgate if he can get back to the level he was at pre-injury.

Maddison will be hard to ignore if he can keep up these performances and prove that he isn't just a number 10 but can play well in different positions as the system changes during a game.

And KDH is the kind of player that knits a midfield together and shouldn't be discounted from a surprise call-up.

Long shots, currently, I know. But I can see all three happening at some stage.

I'd love to see Thomas get a cap too. He's been immense recently. But, even if he can sustain his level of performance over a longer period, I'm not sure he's the type of full-back Southgate wants.

JJ was training with the senior England squad just before his injury and was on the verge of a call up.

Thomas is with the 21s currently and will be monitored however, you've got Luke Shaw, Trippier then Chilwell ahead of him currently.

Barnes will be there or there abouts if he can find his last season form, he's better than Rashford(for me)

Maddison, despite his great current form wont make the England Squad in March should he still be going. The golden boys will get in ahead of him.

Thomas is current england U21 left back. Most likely to be promoted into the full squad if he continues to play first choice for us.  that’s how Southgate operates

Madders has a chance of a call up if he continues with his current form

JJ depending on his come back.
Barnes is up against grealish and sterling,

KDH won’t displace JWP who is the current back up

and lookman - see Barnes

I have said this before, every one of our England call ups in recent years has lost form ,,Drinkwater, Maguire, Chilwell, Maddison, Barnes and even Vardy ,so be careful what you wish for. Leicester City and England rarely go well together except for goalkeepers.

Over the coming decade I’d back Thomas to get some caps. Don’t think he’ll be a regular but 5+ caps is certainly possible.

Justin’s versatility will see him in squads especially as Stairgate likes 3 at the back.

DM/CM is arguably our weakest position so again KDH has a chance, we don’t have many box to box types.

If Maddison isn't properly crocked (calves can be right bastards) and keeps up his run of form until the next international window then he'll almost certainly get a call up.

Barnes is quite a way off though.

Maddison would definitely get a recall if the squad were done tomorrow and he wasn't injured.

Barnes is sadly miles away right now. He was always up against it given England's choice of wingers are probably their strongest position and as good as any nation in the world, but he really hasnt got any kind of form together since his injury back in March and has just had odd games here and there.

Will be a long time if ever since we see Justin at his pre-injury best again. We've seen that with Ricardo.

Way too early for Thomss or KdH. KdH is 23 and only ever started about 5 Premier League games, let's not get too far ahead of ourselves.

Madison deserves something and I'd love to see how he'd link with his mate Grealish, perhaps Madison AM, Grealish LW as he has been playing. Unfortunately Smith-Rowe of Arsenal looks like he's making a strong case (double figures of goals already this season I believe) for a similar role and Southgate doesn't appear to favour that top end of midfield, preferring CM's and golden boy Mount who puts an apple on his desk each morning.

Justin would be great for a tournament squad playing RB, LB or as  a CB in a 3, which could free up a squad place elsewhere or certainly give him the advantage over a fullback limited to one flank (not looking at you Chilwell, honestly :P)

Early days for K DH in terms of PL experience but he's very much that modern day midfielder with a bit of everything, if Southgate likes Mount so much he will surely notice K DH at some point and probably see him as his type of player.

It's good that there's a few and that they're here at the same time, training and no doubt socialising (just not the days before a big game eh Madders) together and becoming part of our identity. We can't afford to buy ready made off the peg full England internationals (I mean current, with respect to Bertrand :giggle:) but picking the right seedlings to potentially grow into one is within our capability.

It’s interesting, as a podcast mentioned, how Madders’ and Grealish’s form seem to always be at polar opposites. Ever since they were both in contention for England.
Last year Madders was injured and had poor form since the Covid party (or was it a team meeting with Cheese and wine?) Grealish was tearing it up for Villa and England and gets his move to Man City. Starts well.

All of a sudden Madders’ form for the past few months is electric and now Grealish is no-where and getting in disciplinary problems.

Weird!

So to get on topic:

It seems now Maddison should be picked for England on form and Grealish should be dropped; but we all know this will not happen.

Ask Mason Mount lol

good example to be fair, but he was 'part of the system' and Sir Waistcoat does seem to favour players who have been in the youth and u21 etc - which you can understand to a degree (doesn't make it right every time !)

I really don't understand it. The number of u21 internationals who have seriously underperformed in their careers is staggering. The setup rewards the Big 6, who hoover up a lot of top prospects ("prospect" being key) and are going go get the glad eye in any event. How many times has Sir Waistcoat picked players that aren't even featuring for their club teams? And how badly and for how long do they have to perform before they get dropped? Yes, he favors a "fixed squad," but any player can shine against the likes you see in qualifying nowadays: Facing Albania, Andorra, and San Marino in home-and-away matches are bound to flatter the players on the pitch.

But he got a semifinal and final (I would argue both were lucky in the draw and in the games), so it will take a lot to change his system.

in no sane world does a player get a Senior England callup after so few top level games

Agreed, Maddison will have to show that this isn't just another flash in the pan and, lest we forget, his off field activities probably leave Southgate a bit cold towards him too.

Not sure Barnes will get much of a sniff until he can produce some form of consistency.

Some games he's phenomenal,  the next you have to double check if he's even on the pitch still.

That's a decent bunch of English talent although you forgot Hamza.

However they aren't getting near an England call up.
