I love Maddison and he is probably our best player but the 4-3-3 is really working for us and is difficult to fit him into the system unless he plays as an 8, which I’m dubious about or as an inverted wide player.

in many ways the game is moving away from these mercurial number 10 types. If he was born 10 years earlier and was in prime Barclays premier league era, the team would be built around him in a 4-2-3-1. As a romantic of the game it’s a shame the game has evolved more and more and being strong, quick and athletic is the default. There should always be a place for the Le Tissier types !

The likes of De Bruyne and Silva at Man City have a lot to answer for, working their arses off every week whilst being amazing technically

It's a real difficult one because an alternative with the squad we have is the 4-3-1-2 with Maddison behind two strikers so you have to choose between giving up two wingers or giving up one striker and one number 10 and I still have no idea which formation I'd pick.

Not going to risk playing Daka and Nacho together. If, knowing our luck, they both picked up knocks we would have no strikers with Vardy still out for a couple of weeks.

Good point! I can now accept a toothless 1 up top.

Our central attacker has always looked isolated when it’s Daka or Kelch on their own. Arsenal are a very decent team, we can’t go into this game leaving one of Daka or Kalechi up top on their own. Our results have turned but there are still areas of concern going forward, we will have to juggle the side around to get any joy at Arsenal.

This is a kind answer imo.

For me, Barnes had been good, but not that good! We have good strikers and should be playing to their strengths rather than loading it all pretty much on Barnes OR Lookman, with this new found plan needing albrighton and no Madison.

I do however understand the pessimism that if we played both now it would be just our luck that they both got injured, but when Vardy is out, and us not choosing Madison it leaves pretty much Barnes alone as any real goalscorer.

I'd much prefer to **** the wingers off and choose an in form Madison at number 10 and two proper strikers who are better in a 2. The defensive side can then stay the same.

Every place in the Premier League is worth big money. A couple of extra places is worth more financially than winning the FA Cup.

But we ain't in the fa cup and this is European glory we are chasing. The most realistically winnable cup we have ever been in at this stage.

And for the sake of a few quid, if we don't win, just make up the money on season ticket price increases 🤣 most of us twats would pay it anyway, and I certainly would if it was a choice between that or prioritising higher mod table (****ing nowhere) position over the European trophy.

Amazing isn't it?. I'd presume 0-1 injuries is very unusual for this stage of the season. 2-5 injuries at this stage is, I'd guess, the norm.

We've had between 6 - 16 out all season. Extraordinary.

I guess this is the difference between playing in Europe and not playing in Europe.

This will be our 41st game of the season so far, where as for Arsenal it’s their 32nd.

We also started the season with at least 4 first team regulars out, which limits rotation.

Looking at the table a 6th or 7th place finish isn’t out of the question, particularly when you look at our remaining 13 games, this is possibly the most challenging game. Man Utd, Spurs and Chelsea all away too, but each one of those it depends who turns up.

Maybe we could do a reverse of the last 2 seasons and make a late dash for a European spot.

I think it depends on who you're choosing as your midfield 3. If one of them is Tielemans, then I'd replace him with Maddison personally as the former is currently well out of form and contributing very little. In fact I'd suggest that his current lethargic side to side performances are merely hampering his team mates. As long as Ndidi sticks to a purely protective shielding role, then I see KDH and Maddison as a creative and destructive hardworking midfield with Maddison slightly forward and KDH his usual energetic box to box self. Tielemans is merely a passenger at the moment and it won't hurt for him to be benched either.

Schmeichel

Fofana Amartey Soyuncu

Ricardo Ndidi KDH Thomas

Maddison

Iheanacho Daka

Great shape and keeps Albrighton Tielemans Justin Barnes Lookman fresh for thursday

Also means we can switch to a 4231 later on and really break on them

Yeah I’ve been impressed with how Villa have recently played the 4-3-1-2 with Coutinho as the 10 behind 2 forwards. Is something we could replicate with Barnes as left sided forward

Need to play Maddison - he is on fire and, without Vardy, is our main goal threat.

Can only see us losing here. Is it one win in the fifty years since Glover and Stringfellow scored the goals to win at Highbury?

Tiny chance that Newcastle (they're playing at Chelski) will end the day above us in the table!! :o

Maddison has been used sparingly recently.  This has to be to protect him from injury.

Barnes, for me, has to start.  He terrifies right backs with his pace and ability to tear them apart.

If we don't rotate, Ndidi and KDH have to play.  I can't see Amartey and Soyuncu being split up as a pairing until Fofana is ready.

If we are not rotating, Albrighton should play.because of his positive influence on the team.

It was sticking Soyuncu on the extreme left of a 3 that lost him his confidence in the first place, he struggles there terribly.

Ricardo and Thomas are no wing backs, have we not learned that yet?

Fofana has Covid and Ricardo very doubtful.

We've just managed a couple of clean sheets and Armarty and Soyuncu, due to injuries, are just starting to form an understanding and you want to suddenly go back to a back 3 that we're uncomfortable in at the best of times?

Arsenal are strong down the flanks so it must be tempting to play Lookman on the left for his defensive/tracking back qualities. Much better ball winner than Barnes.

Yeah, but what do you think of his team? ;)

I actually think this game will suit Daka more. Need him to start alongside Maddison to find him - think we’ll be playing on the counter a bit, so Patson’s pace will be needed I feel.

Yes I agree, Daka has been too isolated lately with a near impossible task. He needs someone to play closer with him and I think Maddison is perfect for that job.

His cleverness around the box is always likely to win a free kick or penalty as well as slipping others in.

He doesn't have the legs to be playing a deeper role and support the attack at the same time.

Emphasis very much on Thursday for me.

...surely you would be looking to play Nacho, as he came on at the back end of the last game!!!

He will suit this role better than Daka

If Ricardo isn't a wing back, I want to know who in the world is...
