Interesting that Villa have nabbed him, considering Newcastle were after him in January.

Very curious to see who Newcastle go for with their next couple of signings.

Diego Carlos is a dreadful bit of business.

replacing Mings with someone equally as rash. Massively overpaid for someone his age too

It's proper football manager stuff. No strategy. Throwing a yogurt at a wall and seeing what sticks.

I’ve seen 28 and 30. Whilst not eye watering, I’ve never been overly impressed. One of those who will probably start well and look dominant and then slowly you’ll see the holes in his game. Similar to Gabriel at Arsenal

Live in Sevilla... Don't get me wrong Carlos is very very good. But he flourishes under a good defensive coach. He'll be good individually but Gerrard as a manager will limit him. He's got a rash tackle in him and an error oe two but he's generally solid. No nonsense. But lopetegui is miles better than Gerrard. He's a bit of a system player. Commits a lot of fouls even for the Spanish league.

Good player but bad fit imo

Cannot wait to see Villa's accounts, this will all blow up fantastically.

Certain clubs manage to get away with what they like. Everton and Man City being two examples.

Not seen a manager backed to the extent of what Gerrard has been. To date it’s been crap by him

Backed to what extent and crap in what manner?
In January they paid 25m for Digne, Cout and Olsen on loan and Chambers for free.

This window they’ve got Cout permanent for 18m and Kamara on a free.

So up until this signing they hadn’t spent particularly big on any one player nor spent big over a number of signings.

The two players they’ve spent money on improve their first 11 and are by no means overpriced.

If you think he’s been crap with transfers I don’t know where you’re coming from. If you think Villa have been crap under him, that’s a different argument but he doesn’t seem to have been backed any more than most managers have for a club that size.

So much for the conspiracy theory that Marsch was going to be fired despite saving Leeds' bacon.

But hey - Aaronson is an American so he must suck, too.

Bloody good at 21, national team stalwart, has played for Marsch and perfect for his high-press system.  The key for their window now is what happens with Phillips. If he goes they need another MF desperately (Adams, perhaps).

Mental

Kamara has signed a ‘staggering contract’ with Aston Villa that will see him earn £60m over five years.

That figure includes a signing bonus but also sees him ‘more than double’ the wages he was earning at Marseille, which were €250k gross per month.

In other words, Kamara will be picking up at least a whopping €500k a month at Aston Villa, which works out at €125,000 a week, or €6m a year.

That accounts for around half of the £60m he’ll pick up over five years, which means Villa could have also given him as much as a £30m signing on fee to get him ahead of the competition.

Doesn’t do much with the ball and doesn’t do much defensively…

To be fair, defensive stats are far more reliant on how the team defends as a unit, especially for centre backs.

I expect he wanted more than that wage of £105/week

but villa can’t keep adding to their wages without having a problem (both in ffp terms and also with the general squad wage structure)

so theyve likely loaded the s/o fee to accommodate that.  And I suspect they pay that s/o fee split into a guaranteed annual bonus to make it even more acceptable in their annual accounts.
