That was the point - with two hosts, which one would play the opening game?

In example of Euro 2000, 2008 and 2012 the country what hosts the opening game (and therefore the host which plays the first game) then doesn’t get to host the final.

2000 - Brussels / Rotterdam

2008 - Basel / Vienna

2012 - Warsaw / Kiev

Ecuador might regret not putting Qatar to the sword there. Opportunity for a 4-0 or 5-0 was on the cards and they just couldn't be arsed.

It could be an issue if it comes down to goal difference as you could see Senegal giving them a slapping, especially if they themselves lose to the Netherlands tomorrow night.

It isn't difficult to see both sides seeing Qatar as a bit of an opportunity to rack up a cricket score.

Ecuador fans made their feelings clear about Qatar's last-minute U-turn on the sale of alcohol at stadiums during the FIFA World Cup.

The South Americans were leading tournament hosts Qatar 2-0 in the opening game of the much-maligned World Cup, when their supporters started chanting "Queremos cerveza, queremos cerveza," which is "we want beer, we want beer."

The commentator just said "to say it's half full would be generous," it's actually pretty depressing.

People have voted with their feet and just haven't gone.

Did I miss something? Not my line drawn on this image below but this is the moment we are looking for the offside right?

The line should be drawn from the second closest defending (Qatari) player to the goal, which is the GK. As you can see, If you drew a line from the GK, the Ecuadorian player's leg is in front of him as the ball comes off his team mate (via the GK punching it onto his head). So as chaotic and confusing as this was (I had to watch it a few times to work out all the pieces to the puzzle), the decision was correct. In fact, they did extremely well to spot it.

Yet another reason why this World Cup is a complete farce. The locals aren't even interested, or to be more accurate, there aren't enough locals for people to be interested in it.

I've never been to a World Cup match, but would love to go to a game. You bet that same feeling can be felt around the world in literally any country that has even a passing interest in the game. Even in South Korea / Japan, the stadiums were full. Granting the competition to a new nation is fine, if they've got some kind of pedigree or interest in the game. For example a world cup in Algeria or Morocco would have a lot of very passionate support. The atmosphere for games that are supposed to be at the very elite level is almost non-existent.

Football was invented by the working class as a means of entertainment after a hard week's slog on the job. This World Cup is the most blatant example yet of those with wealth snatching it from those that invented it.

Yep correct - as bizarre as it was it was actually impressive officiating. I wouldn’t have even thought to look - A1 technology issuing some kind of auto alert may be.

It's like watching the Confederations Cup if that's still even a thing
