Wow didn't realize this was the first time the hosts had lost an opening game. Not always the case though is it that they open the tournament?

Didn't the 2002 World Cup begin with France v Senegal?

Used to be the holders, but been hosts last few tournaments.

That is funny but ironic that its the latin american middle classes who can only afford to go to world cups so he cant really spout the money card.

How is that ironic at all? The Latin American middle class aren’t out there buying FIFA officials.

Cheers, thought that stat wasn't really as amazing as it was made out to be.

Biggest defeat for the hosts in the World Cup could be more interesting! Wonder what that is?

Germany 7 v 1 Brazil is the obvious one I can think of :dunno:

Must be some big defeats in years gone by though.

Brazils semi final loss in 2014 has to be close to biggest surely.

Surely Qatar will not win a single game.

Thats a given now, the big question is....will they have a shot on target or concede less than 3 against Senegal or Holland!

Unless they had a bogof with FIFA they will never be seen again in a world cup.

Yep, maybe because it was joint hosts?

Dion Dublin is a great guy but he's crap in terms of insightful co commentary.

I thought the same, but given the level of the football on display, I can kind of understand. There was not a lot to "analyse" TBF.

He's had better days.

2002 was South Korea and Japan ?

That was the point - with two hosts, which one would play the opening game?

Can’t work out why it was ok for the BBC to show Russia’s opening ceremony with a number of shots of Putin but the Qatari one was deemed a no-no.

Obviously because the beeb is impartial

That was a very mismatched game!

I know I shouldn’t have sympathy but I did feel sorry for Qatar. They couldn’t even put their 2 sitters away. Their like a decent Sunday league pub team

Same pundits will be fuming if that goal would have been allowed to stand against England in a WC final. I don't get it, if its offside its offside. 0.1mm is offside. Where do you draw the line if you start saying anything marginal (but offside) can be given lol

Did I miss something? Not my line drawn on this image below but this is the moment we are looking for the offside right?

You can't tell from that picture but there are two Ecuador players challenging with the keeper. One is in the air and makes contact with the ball then the other one, whose legs you can see, touched the ball next and is offside because his right leg is behind the keeper. I think that's right anyway lol ridiculous that's it's even been spotted but technically correct.

The BBC didn’t show the opening game in 2018. ITV did.

To be honest I actually enjoyed the features they did on Qatari football and three Ecuadorian lads at Brighton

It is indeed the first time a host nation (or co-host) has ever lost its opening game of the World Cup (not necessarily The Opening Game of the tournament). Previously 16 wins and six draws. So it is a pretty decent stat.
