At least VAR has put an end to all the controversial decisions

Obviously a horrendous decision, so bad in fact that it makes me wonder whether referees have been specifically told " If you are told to review a decision at the monitor, take this as instruction that you are wrong and MUST reverse your decision"

They are probably not told, but it is what is implied.

Clearly the rule makers can't get the handball rule right. The same debates have been going around in circles for years and years.

Just be done with it and in instances of contentious handballs, give an indirect free kick.

I've always thought the notion of penalties being given is pretty flawed in many instances anyway. Just because it's in the box, doesn't mean a goal was as likely as it is when you get a penalty.

Why should the ball hitting somebody's hand in the box, potentially nowhere near a goal or in a scenario resembling a chance lead to a free shot on goal from 12 yards out?

So many games, especially big games, come down to one goal. It's a low-scoring sport. To make something as innocuous as a ball hitting somebody's hand so decisive makes a bit of a mockery of the sport when you think about it. If that's what it all comes down to, what's the point?

I can see your points and they are good but only issue where is the threshold for an indirect free kick and penalty?

We’d probably get no consistency over that either .

Without doubt, but at least this nonsense would decide fewer games.

Has to be a bribe going on somewhere with that decision. It is literally not a penalty in the rules of the game. So how with the assistance of video would that be given unless dodgy.

I don't know which upsets me more. Thinking that the game is controlled by the competent but corrupt, or the incompetent. I suspect it is a bit of both, with a smattering of capable people who actually love the game.

Didn't watch this one because its the equivalent of watching 'prime' Nuno Wolves vs 'prime' Dyche Burnley. Aka an entirely cagey, cynical, defensive fest. Very surprised there was a goal at all. Was it actually any good?

Someone had a bet for a 2-0 Portugal win ?

A very poor call but it didn’t decide the  game in reality tbh

Probably means he won’t get another game though if he has gone against IFAB guidelines.

Seems to be one of the top refs outside of Europe too so ought to know better .

Didn’t exactly give the penalty straight away either after looking at the screen which suggests even then he was unsure and not fully confident in his decision making .

The VARs were from Qatar and one from Australia who had previously been reported for getting two key penalty decisions wrong in his homeland.
