World Cup 2018

Colombia were ranked 17th in the world compared to England 8th

Sweden were ranked 21st

Croatia were ranked 12th

Euros 2021

Germany were ranked 16th in the world compared to England 4th

Ukraine were ranked 25th

Denmark were ranked 11th

Italy were ranked 5th

World Cup 2022

Senegal were ranked 18th in the world compared to England 5th

France were rank 4th

So Southgate's England have never beat a team ranked higher then them in a WC or Euros and have only once beat a team ranked in the top 15.

The only teams we weren't favourite against was France, Italy.

It not about demolishing teams it about finding a way to win against sides who are as good or better then you.

Blimey, using the world rankings in an argument? lol

Why would he do that with the eyes of the world on him with an award he will probably treasure. A really really poor choice...

He’s obviously a bit of a “lad” and doesn’t care.

Stupid me using facts and evidence

If those world rankings are facts and evidence then why do we even stage a World Cup every four years? Should have just awarded this year to Brazil

Because some teams can perform when the pressure is on against better teams and pull off an upset. The point being England under Southgate are not one of those teams.

The plus side to Southgate's tenure is we haven't, Hungary in the nation's league aside, lost any games to teams that we should best. We're functional but there is no inspiration to get us wins against the likes of France, Italy, Belgium, Croatia, USA especially in games when it matters.

I'd rather lose to Saudi Arabia than stick 6 past Iran if it gives us the required motivation to grind out results and win the bloody thing.

I've been somewhat disenchanted with the last couple of world cups, even with England doing well in 2018. I've thoroughly enjoyed this one. A lot of enjoyable matches, surprise results and absolutely delighted to see Messi lift that trophy. What a final it was.

MK Dons Tuesday has a lot to live up too

The first World Cup since maradonna’s death and Argentina win it. So many emotions for them. Well done to Argentina.

Feels a bit like fate doesn't it. Napoli gonna go and win Serie A as well.

Lloris was s**t, could have layed a baguette on the goal line and had a better chance of making saves

Quite literally as well - might've saved Messi's pen.

huge difference there. kane can't score more than 1 pen, while mbappe scores 3 crucial pens in a world cup final. world class players dont crumble under pressure

Prime Vardy instead of Kane would have taken us to the final imho.

This is why Kane is a very good player, not an elite player.

Shearer of all England forwards, would have scored both of those penalties.

Oh give up. Some people would say anything to take away from the fact that it was a brilliantly run world Cup, with whoever who went there saying the same thing. Most of this negativety stems from media propaganda and downright prejudice from them being an Islamic country. You have to give credit where credit is due, unfortunately that won't happen.  I guarantee if it was in Japan and he got made to wear a kimono then people would be like 'oh that's amazing, great that they are portraying their culture!"

No, my take has nothing to do with the media it's how I felt in that moment and I'd have felt the same with your Japan example. Cheers

I thought Di Maria and Emo Martinez had the biggest hands in contributing to the victory. Yes Messi played well, and converted his penalties. Just a shame that all the press reports are over-egging his contribution last night. The team won. Mbappe scored a hat trick but a couple of French players were well below par.

That's how it works. Messi is Argentina's talisman. All the talk was about Modric for Croatia, Mbappé for France, Kane for England, Neymar for Brazil, Ronaldo for Portugal (even on the bench). It will always be like this with outstanding players.

And when you contribute two goals and are involved in a third, you can rightly claim to have been the outstanding player.

Finally he's had a proper team around him and no doubt the players around him will receive the recognition they deserve over the coming days, weeks and years.

Prime Vardy was never a good penalty taker and couldn't score two in one match either (vs Everton)

I don’t know what you expect from a football match but imo that was the best World Cup final I’ve ever seen. Had everything a football fan could want

As I said to Una, I think it was just semantics issue. I incorrectly (I now think) considered a "classic" to be an end to end game with lots of action over a period of 90/120 minutes.

True, but we might not have needed two penalties to stay in the match with prime Vardy actually pushing their defenders along with Saka and Foden.
