Another year.... (complete the sentence)

Recommended Posts

Another year of unrelenting bad news...

Our business folded after a terrible summer.... we had an attack of bed bugs over summer and the replacement furniture saw off the meagre life savings...the car  purchased in July had to be written off by this week (everything screwed up in the cold and had to be abandoned in a side street, and then incurred various tickets before the scrapie could turn up), water cut off on Saturday (luckily just a day) etc etc etc.

Having said that, as always we know someone worse off...the folk who got flooded out by the water leak, people forced to queue at food banks, people who've lost loved ones etc.

Sorry to hear all of that.  It has been a shite year, particularly for those running small, independent businesses.  It's been a grind for us all after a decade or more of horrific governance.  Sometimes things feel like they pile up.  The small things add up and become big things.  The stress and pressure can seem unrelenting.

There is always someone worse off.  That doesn't mean it's not legitimate to feel like things are shit.  Who knows maybe next year will be slightly less terrible...

I'm consciously trying to give people more slack (and of course I should have done this before) as many folk are going through extremely stressful times. Everyone has a breaking point, so try not to add to their burdens. But that's yet another minus point to the hole I've fell into. No longer able to buy someone a coffee to cheer them up, or spare some change for the homeless, who must be really suffering ATM.

Those with the least to give are often the most generous.

You can't beat yourself up over the situation.  When the good times roll around again (which, despite it feeling bleak now, they will) you will appreciate them more and you will appreciate even more the simple pleasure of giving.

At the moment it sounds like you need to focus on yourself and your family.  And that's absolutely okay.

If you really feel like you want to help others and if it might improve how you're feeling then there's always a way to give a bit of your time rather than money.  Visit some lonely old folk.  Local soup kitchen etc.
