Does anyone else really see the point of runners-up medals?

To me they appear like just a kick in the teeth just after you've lost, would rather have nothing at all.

I agree they should get them but i dont think they should be lined up and accept them right after the game.

Yeah, that's a fair point, actually - it's the lining up to get them when someone really would rather be anywhere else that is the biggest problem.

I absolutely hate the way trophy lifts are choreographed now.

Takes an age to set up.

Virtually the whole stadium walks on stage before anybody goes near the trophy.

Trophy then handed to captain to walk over to team before finally lifting.

Hate it, hate it, hate it.

Kills all the passion.

Get the trophy into their hands within 5 minutes while emotions are highest, before anything else happens.

Well deserved award for Mary Earps.

Absolutely.

I would maintain it would be better to not give it to her now, though, like the runners-up medals. I don't think anyone would receive such an award at this time and be happy about it in the same circumstances.

What a bummer !
5:30am and can’t even go back to sleep now. Not the best start to the day.

Leicester won…Tank your emotions for a week..

England got to the Final..

And Spain best team in the competition,

played great football…& deserved to win..

Entertaining,maybe best ever women’s final…

2nd half…never got near their goal,to test the GK…

Plus for me,we have the players…

Kelly & JamesI would have played from the start…

attacked them from the word go..

But the English dont like leaning out the window to far

& take even the smallest of risks..

Has  mentioned a good competition for the English.

We were at least 2nd best…& we really did kick off the

womens cause in World football…

Earlier in the decade USA shown that women had

something to offer….

You starting “your” day on a bummer..stop & think how

our English ladies are feeling,at the end of their day..

And they'd have been slaughtered for flying to Australia at the cost of the public and we'd have been told how much carbon their trip generated.

And like most of the non-shouty-protesting population, we'd have ignored it completely.

I completely agree, but they couldn't win either way.

Slated for not going, slated for going.

Sums up the state of the country and most of the world to be honest.

Mary Earp brilliant, the rest of the side very disappointing. Great finish for what proved to be the winner, but incredibly poor tracking of the run in behind. Most here would give Doyle heavy criticism if he let someone through like that in one of our matches, let alone a World Cup final.

At least now maybe we can scale back the false equivalence a little bit - some corners of the media have been incredibly patronising talking about this being our moment to end 57 years of hurt. The same media who gave precisely zero shits about Women's football until the past 5 years at a stretch, when they realised we were actually quite good at it? The word bandwagon springs to mind.

There's always been an arrogance and lack of self-awareness when it comes to England in tournaments, one that ultimately makes all but the most die-hard fans struggle to really tap into the fever, and this is the first time I've genuinely felt it seep into the feeling of watching the Lionesses. I shouldn't feel any sense of schadenfreude seeing my country lose a big game, but I'm just not that bothered since it hopefully comes as a bit of a reality check that, no, it's not our God-given right to turn up and win everything put before us.

Then again, the girls have definitely proven they're equal to the men's team by blowing it in the games where it matters. Presumably certain players and Wiegman will come in for pelters for their individual errors and tactical decisions today? I doubt it somehow.

OK, I'm going to go back into my box now and be a grumpy old man there.

Strange comment from you Mr Mac ..  of course there should be runners up medals ..  something to remind you that you represented your country and played in a World Cup final .. something to be treasured and passed down the family.  And of course it should be done after the game ..  and the losing team should stay and congratulate and applaud the winners.

I was very impressed with her to be honest. Having been in tears a few minutes earlier, she accepted it with enthusiasm and a smile.

Also the women were so much classier getting their runners up medals than some of the England men. None of them took their medals off as soon as they got them in a stroppy sulk!
