If he leaves it'll be on a free. Not a chance there's someone that's going to match his wages and pay a fee. He'll be better off staying on whatever he's on here and going somewhere on a free.

If we can find a mug to buy him

He'd be well worth a couple of mill to a functioning Championship team.

I don't trust us to spend it well, but it's money we will need.

Assuming he would be willing to take a pay cut to leave...

Basically he’s going to be our Jack Rodwell. Mega wages in League One eating up 30% of the entire wage budget allocation. At least he doesn’t have his injury record, but more to the point who will pay a comparable wage? Er, no one. Good job we’ve promoted the clowns that dished out these contracts eh.

I have it on good authority that Winks agent was talking to other clubs before Xmas about signing this summer (presumably on a free) and was part of the fall out that occurred. Seems odd that would be happening if both parties were aware on an extension. I suspect they'll agree to rip it up unless we have indeed reduced his amortisation over 4 years rather than the initial 3.

He’s been wanting out for a while. At the start of this season he was trying to manoeuvre a move to Spain or Portugal so I’m told, though he’d get a pittance of what we’re paying him. Fascinating to see what his next contract will be.

I get more and more bemused by the decisions made by this club every day. I vaguely remember supporting this club bringing me some pleasure - although I may be imaging that!

Just remember as well that Winks was in the aftermath of the 2022/23 debacle where we had supposedly reviewed our errors.

Conspiracy theory:

The club want to re-sign Winks

Winks has realised he is not going to earn as much elsewhere after looking around in January.

The club has released a story that Winks was extended automatically in 2023 to avoid backlash from fans when he's still here next season.

Well, there's always the hope he puts a shift in in all of the remaining league matches, so we could potentially sell him instead of letting him go on a free...

It's a weird one to be honest because I'd sort of attributed his attitude to him not giving a shit because he'd be off next season, which isn't the case.

Yeah seems a bit strange we are only hearing about this extension clause now

I don't think this is all bad, standard FT reaction.

It will give us options in the summer

Definitely not a standard FT reaction because almost everyone is aligned with the same, correct view.

Let's say he's on £45k a week, being burdened with that for a player with no long term future, nor can he be bothered, is absolutely bad news. Bizarre to try and spin it any other way. £45k a week at this level should be for an absolute statement player, not for somebody who's performances have been relegation fodder.
