I consider myself pretty clued up on politics and government, but would say I still wasn't sufficiently knowledgable on EU to cast a meaningfull vote on the UK's membership. So if you think 67% of voters knew what leaving EU would mean to the UK, you are living in cloud cuckoo land🤣🤣 1

I know people at the place I worked at the time who were not unintelligent people and who followed the news who just said they were voting leave because “we give them too much money” and didn’t understand what the basics of freedom of movement for goods, services and people even was or meant or the reasons why their passports didn’t get stamped or why they could buy alcohol and cigarettes or expensive clothes or their holiday in the algarve and no one at customs checked it 1

Perhaps. But then they play the PR game extremely well. Which brings me to my next point... ...I think the bolded was the exact point being made, and I wish that they didn't use their PR savvy to imply in any way otherwise. The lack of honesty of purpose is rather sickening, especially when so many people clearly buy into it. 1

Yes because people who have that are all liking to kill their parents and keep them dead in the house without anyone asking questions.. Supposed mental health played a part too. Important of course and those who suffer need help but cannot excuse stuff like this.

They already couldn’t apply for bachelors students so these are masters and doctorate students which means highly specialised people that very likely aren’t taking any jobs away from your average Joe in the street. I work at a UK uni and when the new rules came in (in 2022 I think?) we saw a big increase at our place and I believe many others of postgrad students who frankly had no interest in studying coming over with dependents. I think that's the uni's fault as much as the government tbh and it ended up with applications from one particular region not being accepted as it was so bad. Clearly that route was being massively abused. I think from figures I saw recently visas for family members are down like 90% but for students overall it's like 15-20%, so I don't think honestly it's going to put off too many genuine students. I agree with obsession over numbers but 3/4 of a million net is obviously a pretty huge figure and whether those people are coming for work/study/love whatever they still need to find places to live, use public services etc. 2
