We were very, very unfortunate to have Oliver Skipp because to have him cost us 25 million quid.  Nothing fortunate about that.  You can't say we're fortunate to have him while ignoring the cost of having him.  A hall of famer among the long list of recent disastrous signings.

We should also remember that he was signed to play in the Premier League.  Thanks Steve!  How fortunate we are!

The fee was 20M not 25M

I will always dislike him as a player if the performances don’t match the fee, by all means blame the club as well but he did have a level of expectation when we signed him.

As a bloke comes across nice but it makes me sick seeing the money thrown at players that don’t turn out well, and I don’t even mean just players signing for us!

It’s a stretch that we are fortunate to have him?  Did you forget which league we were playing in?  Or do you still think we are in and around top 4 or 5 prem?

Why not read what people have written?  Who’s actually written anything even approximating to  ‘always rated him’ in the last few pages?

‘He’s been pretty good recently’ is the general theme…. At least try to disagree with something that that actually being said…

Fully aware of what league we're in and taking that into account, I'm fully aware it's more of Skipp's level.

Forget the fee, he is an ordinary footballer who does very little to impact games. Just a bit of a nothing player who is happy to "make things tick" or to me, often shy away from responsibilities. He doesn't drive with the ball, he's not a great tackler, doesn't really get involved in attacks, rarely looks like scoring.

I just don't rate him that's all, so when someone goes the opposite and says we're "lucky to have him", it just felt too much.

At the end of the day, as a Premier League club we paid £20m for a Championship level midfielder who has spent most of this season behind Soumare in the pecking order and his signing is just emblematic of the terrible governance at this  club that continues as we learn nothing from our previous mistakes.

The fact that we are finally getting a tune out of him now and then at Championship level and his putting in a shift against a league two club are not things we should be wetting ourselves about and saying how 'fortunate' we are to have him, it is the bare minimum we should be demanding.

A level of expectation? Everyone knew he was shit even back then.

I guess the principal point I was attempting to make is that the forum makes their mind up on a player and then that line is simply trotted out again and again….  with, what appears to me, very little consideration to what they’ve actually just viewed on the pitch

Maybe not you specifically,  but I see it quite a lot….

That is a very patronising assumption you're making Ben.  I can think of a much simpler explanation.

Hilarious that some people think we have the new Pirlo because of a performance against a struggling L2 team. Some people have short memories and have forgotten his honking performances V  QPR, Watford and Sheff Utd recently...

Consistency is key, and we can expect a decent game off him at times but there's too many game he looks the pits still.

Rewind 15 years or so, remember that midfield of Williams and Hughes? Both on their day could look good but ultimately they were mid to low Championship quality because of lack of consistency. Skipp reminds me of one of them.

Give me a limited Skipp trying his hardest over a Winks or Soumare any day of the week.  I'd do a 400 mile round trip to watch Hughes and Williams no problem as they were decent pros, as I would with Skipp.

I used to moan about having to walk a mile to see Hughes give the ball away, so fair play lol

Skipp and James are remarkably similar players tbh. The latter’s injuries cemented his reputation as far better than he actually was. He was neat, tidy and circulated the ball well without being particularly impactful in the final third - just as Skipp does.

Genuinely thought I'd opened the Braybrooke thread for a sec.

The obvious mistake of course being that he's Modric, not Pirlo.

Amazing that people think he's now some kind of cross between Xavi or Iniesta on the strength of one reasonable performance against a very poor Cheltenham side

Nobody has said that :dunno:

The criticism if you're not nihilistic about absolutely everything is a bit tiring.

I miss Leicester being good, but more than that I miss when supporting us used to be fun.

Feels like you're at a political protest now.

He gets the same treatment on here; that Ayoze Perez got.

If they’d both cost £1m then they’d get rave reviews.

Neither decided the transfer fee that was agreed for them, therefore it’s always harsh to beat them

with it.

Skipp does a steady job, whilst not exactly pulling up any trees. If we had more more with his commitment and determination though, we’d have more points.

Football is such a close game at the top level. Injuries can knock %’s of ability off you and that’s why we have seen such a drastic falloff from the likes of Ricardo. If they’d both cost start semi injured, then they’ve got no hope of adhering themselves to internet forum posters, as they become scapegoats.

People were far too harsh on Perez

Slightly different from Perez in terms of Perez the obvious weak link in a very good side and some of the criticism latterly was because he was the most lightweight player around, but yes, had he been even £20m he'd have been a good signing on the whole.

But couldn't agree more with the bold bit. Apart from a very few who are the elite of the elite, a massive chunk of professional footballers are separated by very fine margins; often what is between the ears in a footballing sense or a lack of physicality in some way. And of course luck/timing is most important as it is in all walks of life. It's why we won the PL with lots of 'rejects', misfits and football league career players, sometimes it just needs those fine margins to fall into place.

Obviously James' contributions are standout but his overall performances in recent weeks have dipped to the point that Skipp has probably been the most consistent player recently. Losing James is a bigger deal but to lose Skipp at the same time is brutal.

I think you're going to have to quote someone saying that as you regularly seem to attack points that no one is making.

In a similar vein, I can't believe you think that scotch eggs should be banned and that the colour yellow is offensive and that dogs should be round up and shot in front of their owners.

Do you see how tiresome it is?

Can someone else pick the baton here please? I don't like punching down. Do we have a 6 year old who can try to explain it to him?

In truth mate, that's on me since I don't know why I expected anything different (spoiler; I didn't).

Must be nice in your world.
