Cast the net a bit further like Palace or Brighton

But the board can't do that because we have an inept owner and clueless DOF.

They only heard of Maresca because 2 years ago firstly Southampton wanted him and he said no and then Celtic wanted him and he said no there also

actually amazed that they  landed Maresca when they did , that appointment was imaginative and suggested some sort of due diligence , not exactly something the dunces running the club are renowned for

The board only went for Maresca when he rejected offers from Southampton and Celtic

We are 38 pages into a new manager thread but you we know if anyone at the club has even spoken to Ruud about the future in recent days? I didn't get that impression listening to the press conference.

The impression he gave was that he wants to stay but hasn't been told either way by the club and is frustrated at their radio silence. It sounded like he's now expecting to be given the boot and is waiting for confirmation, but nobody has even spoken to him about it. It backs up what the Dutch journalist was saying the other day - that Rudkin doesn't even know what will happen until Top picks up the phone and tells him. They all just wait around for Top's signal...

It could be a random appointment similar to both Raneiri and Puel. Both were named pretty much out of nowhere. Is there any manager out of work yet to be mentioned... most likely could be them.

He doesn’t want to stay or wants to entertain a future. He’s implying it so top knows it’s “pay up in full or I’m not walking”.

Pretty certain Russel Martin could get us promoted again with a small clear out and bit of investment in key positions and going back to Mavididi fatawu winks etc. however we would be in exact same position if we got promoted and players would not be good enough to play that style in the prem without huge uplift in quality. So there needs to be a better answer that is more future proof i think.

Let's be honest here. The only way we make the right appointment next is if we effectively do it by accident. God only knows what horrors would have awaited us in the summer of 2023 if Maresca had gone to Saints or Celtic.

We've got to hope that Martin wants Rangers or someone in the CFG, that the right person applies in his stead and impresses at interview. It won't be strategic or judicious, it'll be blind luck.

Care to explain how he has ‘improved’ Southampton? Because my Southampton-supporting friends certainly don’t see it like that…

Point taken, he may not have improved them but he improved their style of play and got them promoted at first attempt.

Looking back I bet many saints fans would have rather kept him that employed Juric

I doubt he would. Southampton had a pretty strong side last year and got 87 points losing 11 games.

He's a proven manager.  Proven to be terrible at PL level.

Russell flaming Martin I ask you.  Bring on the dancing horses!

Plus if you look at his teams goals for v goals against statistics it’s extremely poor and shows up his kamikaze style of build up play at all costs from the back.

It has been ever since Brendan left…

If we look at the managerial appointments and sackings since Vichai's tragic death, it does make for grim reading.

Puel - Right to sack, team going nowhere.

Rodgers - Very good appointment for the first two years, but should have sacked him a good six months earlier. Had they done so in October 2022, survival would have been very achievable and a far better replacement could have been found.

Smith - Port in a storm and given an impossible job. We did at least look like scoring and winning, but too much to do. And too slow to appoint him, meaning we lost a critical game against Bournemouth under two woeful caretakers.

Maresca - Good appointment who had a good summer transfer window. We were a little fragile mentally, but the players clearly loved playing under him and I do believe he has quite a high ceiling. He should have been backed more in January. He may not have left if we had and, while he probably wouldn't have lasted the season in the PL due to stubbornness, you can guarantee the transfer window would have been better than....

Cooper - Atrocious appointment. Blind panic after Potter, who would have represented a clear transition and future planning, turned us down. The playing style couldn't have been further from Maresca's, the players weren't having him, the transfer business was criminal and talented young players like Nelson and Alves weren't given a chance to step up despite youth development being one of his key strengths according to supporters. They sacked him at the right time, but...

RVN - Sounded good, seemed to have the right ideas and started well. But that game at Newcastle was the turning point. Ward being on freaked the defence out and was a key part of the collapse, which would have alerted a more able manager to the fact that he wasn't it and Stolarczyk should have been played for the crucial Wolves game. The team was beaten the moment Ward was picked for that one and we've never recovered. The board also failed to back him in January despite it being clear that he had been promised otherwise- same as Maresca. He's been stubborn, clueless and lacking authority since and must leave as soon as possible for his own sake as much as the club's.

So it's fair to say it has been a mixed bag under Top's tenure. Right on Puel and initially right on Rodgers, it's all been horribly and steeply downhill since 2022. The one correct managers decision since then, Maresca, appears to me more of one that fell into their lap rather than one they actively sought out. And they still did wrong by him.

The depressing truth is that we're reliant on the right man falling into the club's lap again and them doing right by him when he does. But the record isn't great, to say the least.
