They're not, but one of them, which wants to spend on public services and public good, has to balance the books to avoid being sneered at.

The other party, who historically have run bigger deficits over the last 50 years, are believed to be economically tighter, and are quite happy to keep pushing versions of austerity and his economics, despite the fact austerity leads to stagnation and terrible public services. They can spend what they like in the form of tax cuts and nobody bats an eyelid.

I think you’re too far into your left wing bubble to look at this objectively. There is very little to separate the two, particular now Labour has moved to the right since Corbyn.

Well yes.  And others right to tell him he is a tit.

Why would you think I'm in a left wing bubble?

85% of British media is right wing. Social media is utterly filled with reform bots and fake accounts. It's kinda hard to avoid right wing talking points.

Labour absolutely are economically wedded to similar economics to the Tories when it comes to following neoliberal dogma, yes. The same was true under Blair/Brown but it's pretty easy to see that their spending priorities were different to the Tories. And current labour have brought back sure start, are spending on school dinners, prioritising green energy, making different choices than we've seen from a Tory party that has lurched rightwards in recent years.

Robert Jenrick: I didn't see another white face when I was there (in Handsworth)

Also Robert Jenrick: it's not about the colour of someone's skin

He's hiding behind his racist tropes by saying 'I want to see a well-integrated community'. He might as well join Reform with his line of thinking. Straight out of their playbook but they won't actually do anything productive for society to help people integrate, but instead target them and belittle any non-white person.

Yep.

Also, as has been mentioned here before, if someone like Jenrick clearly doesn't make any distinction between types of "brown faces" that he sees, why would anyone expect anyone else who thinks like him to?

I feel more for the residents of Handsworth.  Imagine if the only white face you saw was Robert Jenrick. Having to see that would make you sick.

Just another dog whistle politician, who doesn't actually have any beliefs, but  follows his nose to the latest, smelliest extremes of political discourse, in the hope that it gives him a semblance of power.

God the standard of the bulk of politicians these days.

Jenrick so too right wing for reform 😄

he’d be apoplectic at Stansted arrivals in August …….

On the subject of the Conservatives more widely, I don't see what they think they've got to gain by continuing to pivot to the right. Reform have got this vote pretty much tied up now.  They ain't getting these people back.

Surely there are more votes they could gain by looking to move more back towards the centre. Lib Dem territory.

Feels that they are angling to be a minority partner in a Reform government, which is a sad indictment as to where the greatest election winning machine in our history finds itself these days I suppose.

In the same breath, if someone with a voice like Neville who said '' angry middle aged white men'' and instead said ''young radicalised brown men'' there would be uproar.

He is really daft sometimes in what he says - he's the biggest champagne socialist going - he's better just to keep his nose out of stuff but he can't help himself.

Why does he have to keep his nose out of stuff though?

Surely he can have his own views and be able to air them, like any of us.

I don't think it's daft what he was saying. Perhaps he could have been more nuanced but it's quite obvious what the sentiment is behind it.

A further inconvenient truth is that those (nonwhite) groups and individuals, while (sometimes) a big threat in terms of incidents caused, are among the furthest away from actually achieving their political objectives and causing their brand of lunacy to be institutionalised in the UK. Other groups with similar nefarious aims are, sad to say, rather closer.

I guess it comes down to whether the beholder thinks the individual incident or the less common but eventual monolithic and absolute threat is more dangerous.

Think this is relevant to current discussion.

Thanks for that one, as you say, mixed news but good to see that landmark being reached.

Also lots of reasons in there why China is leading the way and the Anglosphere is lagging behind while still looking down their noses at them.

especially when people say all the time "why bother in the UK when China............"

what this REALLY does by the way... is potentially shift more of the innovation and growth over to the sun belt countries where they can easily access cheap energy and manufacture at lower prices.

geopolitically, it's quite an interesting shift....

Is china really way ahead or are those numbers skewed in their favour due to the lengths they have to go?

Yes that reads they have put in more solar/wind capacity than x countries combined but that’s only reduced their fossil fuel consumption by 2% does the UK for instance have to put in the same amount of ‘farms’ to reduce it’s fossil fuel consumption by 2%?

Is the goal to put in the most or reduce the most 🤷‍♂️

Not trolling because it’s great they are doing what they are doing and if their numbers lead other countries or in the case of USA out perform thus embarrass them to try and beat them in the next quarter for installations so they can have their name top of the pile for installs, then it’s a win win either way.

Yes surely he's allowed freedom of speech....

I think he knows he will get flak for this but has stood up and said it anyway. I don't see what his financial situation has to do with anything and he is not making an explicitly socialist point, it's more around the mis-use of patriotism and he is quite right about that. You are just using the 'champagne socialist' tag as a stick to beat him with.

He is a champagne socialist - that's my view, if we are on the topic of freedom of speech....

Haven’t really followed what’s been happening over there, but from what I do see, it seems like a bit of a shit show of people hating each other? Is that what it’s actually like? Or are most people just going about their business as normal?

Also why is Gary Neville doing any sort of social commentary? And why is anyone listening to anything he has to say?
