Why is it baffling that Alves has played predominantly as a left winger? When the player was interviewed earlier this season he said left wing was his strongest position. It shouldn’t be baffling that a player is frequently played in their favoured role. He’s not slow anyway and when he’s dribbling with the ball he’s actually rapid. Quick touches, keeps the ball close and can trick a player either way. He was very good in the RWB role yesterday btw. He is rIght footed so he looked balanced in that role where there’s less requirement to cut in but he can do so still and hit the crossbar with his left foot effort.

Doyle was also outstanding in the 8 role today, I was happy that Martin found a way to play them both in a back 3 formation that negates wingers.

I said it was baffling that he would try Doyle in the 10 but not Alves.

I messaged my mates who are on holiday and missed yesterday's game and the response was " deck me is that a positive message from you"🤣🤣

I dont like this manager BUT for lcfc I pray this is the start of some form.

I'd like to think hes learned some6 and changed it abit.

Dont get me wrong, we ain't turned into PSG and Donny were sh1te but just clutching at anything.

A win is always followed by a shit draw and then a loss we are not consistent enough to go on a winning run , getting promoted under Martin is not happening in my opinion and we need to get promoted for the sake of our future as a club.

There are better managers out there , so we should make the change.

Alves has been a very bright spark and I want him in the 11.

He just isn’t quick enough for the wing, for me.

He definitely is. He's a lot quicker than you're giving him credit for. It's probably the first 5 yards but he's basically past his man straight away every single time

Desparately needs a follow up win tomorrow or it’s back to square one.

Yes. The clock is reset with each win and set ticking again with every draw or loss. Meanwhile we are running out of time.

We definitely played more direct against Doncaster didn’t we? I haven’t just made that up

Do we think Martin has finally realised that his management career is likely over if he continues this life long obsession with possession at all costs football?

I guess we will find out over the next few games, but you are not making it up, as it certainly seemed like he mixed it up more and we went more direct.

Incoming 83% possession with 0 shots on target tomorrow… 🤦🏻‍♂️

We definitely saw a change in approach against Doncaster. There was a change in formation and there was definitely not as much emphasis on playing the ball around the back, particularly between the goalkeeper and the central defenders. We even saw the keeper going long from goal kicks. It wasn't a great performance but we still had plenty of opportunities to have scored more goals. The approach was certainly more pragmatic, but we still give away many chances. It seems to me that he just knew that he had to win and that him having to abandon some of his principles to do that is very telling. It will be typical if we go on a 4/5 game winning run being more pragmatic and then he starts to feel comfortable and reverts back to type. In the championship playoffs he went to West Brom with a back 5 and got a 0-0 draw and then beat them comfortably at home in the return leg and then won a play-off final against Leeds with <40% possession and then reverted back to type once they were promoted.

Definitely saw Page & Braybrooke play a few quicker forward passes.

Cardiff top the possession stats in the championship (64.1%) and are currently in 19th in the table.

This playstyle is finished in the modern game. Gerrim out.

Brighton have averaged 60% possession this season and are third in the premier league. Having more possession than the opposition isn't in itself a play style. There are many different ways of playing that involve having more of the ball than the opposition. I do think that Russell Martin's brand of football is largely ineffective though.

Watched Bournemouth's highlights this morning and a tinge of jealousy washed over me hearing Tavernier talk about how good it was playing direct and on the front foot.

Top three in possession stats in the Premier League: Man City, Arsenal and Brighton.

Personally I don’t think it’s the playstyle that’s finished. It’s about flexibility and making it work for the players at your disposal. The real skill is looking at the players that you’ve got and utilising their skills to the full potential - as we did so ruthlessly in 15/16.

If you look at many players in the lower leagues or women’s football they don’t have the technical skills to retain the ball and play through a press. That’s our real issue. We’re asking the likes of McCarthy, Thomas and Souttar to both be able to control the ball, but also have the football intelligence to use it properly.

I don’t think it’s the style that’s finished. It’s the obsession that’s it’s the best approach for all players, irrespective of ability and technique and at all levels of football.

Sadly, any comparisons to us and Brighton are miles off it.

They signed players based on data and build a squad ready to be replaced.

We sign manager’s mates or agent led signings.

A prime example of Brighton’s model they had the following starting as CM’s (before cashing in and having a ready made replacement) Bissouma, Caicedo, Baleba and now Andres.

It’s like comparing apples and pears.

What you have successfully argued is that Brighton are well run and we're not. I didn't need to be convinced of that. I was just presenting contrary evidence to the idea that you can't be successful by having significantly more possession than the opposition.

His post match interview said it all, we might change back for Bromley, we might not. Which means we will.

Think it means he's not giving anything away - will be surprised if it's not the same team and the same tactics - worked well enough on Saturday.

Tbf to them they also topped the possession stats in Div 1 last season and got automatic promotion.

Don't disagree however that at below the very top level, this style just doesn't make sense, especially as your sole tactical set up.

From yesterday’s Mercury.

I’d politely suggest this proves his critics are right, not wrong - I’ve seen plenty on here criticise RM for being too rigid and playing the same formation and tactics over and over again with the same dire results. Changing things up can only be a good thing, and about time too.
