It’s make or break for both Martin and ourselves.
If we don’t go up next season I fear we’ll be in this division for a while.
Martin’s reputation or lack of it will take an even bigger hit no matter what nonsense he comes out with on podcasts and interviews.
There’s only so much he can claim his only achievement of taking Southampton up.
The rest of his managerial career to date is distinctly average at best.
He’ll have a pre season and get the players he wants within reason.
I sincerely hope he has learnt and changed his ways.
Being flexible enough during matches and changing the shape/system has to be a priority. If not I genuinely don’t see him lasting very long here.

There's plenty of people out there who would have taken the job knowing that they could get us back to the Championship without too much effort.

Foreign managers and Good Coachs just looking for a break to show their talent.

Personnally I liked the sound of Hake, A Dutch Coach with some proven backround who's been around the block.

I feel giving someone who's failed in his last few jobs a 3 year Contract is just further evidence that we are still not learning from our mistakes.

It should be a 1 year contract with a Bonus and further year based on league position or promotion. Any Manager who feels he's good enough would back himself.

If he doesn't then he's only a shister and we've had enough of them lately.

Martin is going to have to put together a new young team and yet he has to hit the ground winning, Otherwise he'll be under early pressure and trouble.

The same Rene Hake that has a managerial win percentage of 35% against Russell Martin with a career win rate at 38%?? That Rene Hake?

Two fishy records in fairness

Listened to WYS with Mike Stowell on it and find the comments about Tom Cleverley interesting. How he went for a possession heavy approach and it was on course to take them down for a second season running. He switched things up around December and they ended up missing the play-offs due to a last minute goal. Interestingly their strikers form massively improved, Aribim Pepple scored 15 times after Christmas, Lorent Tolaj scored more consistently throughout the season but did get more goals per game in the second half of the season as well as he had a run out injured.

Doesn't bode particularly well IMO. Now a lot depends on the recruitment but I think we've really got to get it right for this to work. If we go to Plymouth early season, given Martin's generally slow starts I expect us to be beaten quite heavily.

We are where we are, are you going to spend the next season moaning constantly about it?

Certain sections of the fanbase will criticise the ownership whatever happens.

Absolutely i am because with the resources we have, we shouldnt be where we are and its unforgivable.

A few wins against tinpot teams isnt going to change that.

How many times in the past 4-5 years have we heard ‘they’ve got to get recruitment right’

As a fan whose club has been in L1 for the last five years (Wycombe) I can offer a positive and a negative to appointing a manager who even crosses the road sideways (and I don't rate at all):

Positive: Birmingham absolutely walked this league a couple of seasons ago being very possession based, though it took them half a season to even begin to pull away, and they spent a record amount on players. They were so expensively put together that they were almost promoted in spite of a quite boring style. So maybe you make good personnel decisions, throw a bit of money around (not sure how much you can) and get promoted in spite of the manager.

Negative: Generally, trying to play PL-style sideways football - especially the 'bad tribute band' version that Martin employs - simply does not work in L1 as a general rule. You are going to get physically bullied week in, week out, unless you have some serious steel in this division.

The two points sound like they contradict each other, but it is basically a case of whether you can spend and wisely transfer your way from the negative to the positive. If not, Luton this past season may be the best comp.

I think once the season starts, most people will give Martin a chance (we dont really have much option) but even if we do win the league/get promoted, it will not stop the protests to get Top and Rudkin out. The damage they have done to this club will take many years (if ever) to recover from and winning league one Will not all of a sudden give them a free pass. I can support Martin, I can support the players, I won't support this owner and his board of clowns!

I’ve just watched the interview. Ten minutes of:

“Energy amazing togetherness win in the way we want to win and 22500 season tickets.”

Kill me now.

Fantastic quotes from a salt of the earth bit the spooky similarities in the Southampton link and the season ticket sales lauded as a big ticket item 😂😂😂

I thought the comment from Mandy about instilling a winning mentality was interesting. Haven’t compared side to side but feels different from the MBA Buzzwords for Breakfast about alignment and synergy and all that bollocks I’ve come to expect in the modern era. Straight and to the point - let’s win some shit.

On average twice a season, typically coinciding with the start of the season and then immediately upon the sacking of that season’s incumbent manager.

Still, getting the recruitment right THIS summer is absolutely critical. And probably the winter window for Martin’s replacement, to be fair…

In what way do we all want to win? I’d be happy to stick to the “score more goals than the opposition” method of winning but open to suggestions.

Is this a veiled reference to winning in a court of law rather than on footballing merit? Is he having a dig at our financial misdeeds already?

Lovely preview of whats to come for us next season with that 2nd Norway goal

Didn’t see it; but assuming the Iraqi’s were fannying about in their own box with the ball?

I think he has alluded to being a little bit dynamic depending on the squad strengths earlier in his career

At MK Dons we had two strong, powerful centre-forwards so played two strikers and found a way to score goals. At Swansea we didn't have any wingers so we had to play defenders or midfielders.

"Last season we had so much attacking power for the Championship we scored a lot of goals.

"Now the guys are doing what we were told we couldn't in terms of having so much of the ball in the Premier League, but there has to be the same mentality there was last year.

"Whichever style of play you have, the game is about beating your opponent and dominating your opponent, and we don't do that quite enough yet."

How long til we see the first inkling of broken promises by the board?
he’ll be no different in being sold a lie

When we get the ‘outgoings before incomings’ interview.

Although you would expect he has a bit of sense. We are in league 1. He’s hardly going to have a 30 mil kitty to sp4nk on ball playing center backs.

Or to the comment below when he’s lining up with the same washed out coaches we have now
