He's not jumping ship, he left Barnsley at the end of the last season by mutual agreement. So he's looking for work and hopefully Rudkin hasn't won't pay silly money, should he end up coming here.

Thanks, didn't know that.

Sound appointment

Just need to get rid of King, Sadler, Hughes and Reeves and bring in proven GK and fitness coach(s).

Sal Bibbo could be an option.

Stuart Reid too.

As I've said before, I'm still willing to give him a chance. Every manager deserves that. Right now though we're back in Cooper territory: everyone's judged him before he's started.

I still feel the frustration with the ownership for this move. I get the anger and resentment at how the club's being run. But FFS, let's at least see how he pans out. The negativity's all-encompassing at the minute and I can't be arsed with it. We will forever be in this negative death spiral otherwise.

I'll give him time. And if it doesn't work out, I'll throw all my vitriol back where it belongs: at the ownership.

But he does have great hair.

And "everyone" were proven right about Cooper, it was a disaster. He's since been found out in Denmark as well.

But either way, it can't have been "everyone". Because judging by the video images of the stands towards the end of last season, there were still PLENTY of supporters clapping the truly abject performances that the team served up. If anything, this fanbase has been slow to pick up on the coffee smell.

C'mon, do you really think Scott parker would come to us?

I can guarantee you the names listed you wouldn't get a good reaction either from the fans base on here. I am not over the moon with the appointment, but I don't think its as bad as some people are making out.

He is young, has a massive point to prove after his short spell at Rangers (hopefully he has learnt a fair bit) he has clear identity, wants an "all in" attitude or you won't play - we have let standards slip massively over the last two years since Maresca, he will hopefully bring this culture back. He is clearly a good man manager, would get the youth playing and on side also.

I might be wrong, but in typical Foxestalk fashion, there might be a few people with egg on their face come the end of the season

Why wouldn’t he? We just handed someone a three year contract on presumably top level Championship wages. We’d probably pay more in wages than Burnley was. We must be paying a fair amount or why would Russell Martin with all his experience in the top two divisions want to drop to the third tier?

And you’re right - that bin fire of a list would have wound people up no end if any of them turned up here. But the point remains - one promotion from the Championship to the Premier League does not make this appointment some kind of coup.

Promotion is the absolute minimum objective for the season. It’s a financial imperative. But promotion alone won’t be enough to consider the season a runaway success - anything less than champions is our lowest ever final position in the league.

I’m operating under the assumption he will get us promoted. He has to. How he does it remains to be seen. And whether he sees out his three year contract is the real marker - if he’s any good, he’ll still be here in May 2029.

Definitely some hyperbole about how bad the appointment is, but you can’t really blame people with all the warning signs that exist.

I certainly don't remember Cooper being completely written off at the start either- underwhelming certainly, but most were willing to give him a chance.

Those of us who know ball, knew from the start

Pooper was a very poor appointment and was rightly called out at the time.

Shouldve been Corberan.

Indeed, the bare mimimum for Nigel Pearson in his very first season with us was to achieve immediate promotion which he did with a great aplomb, the same can only apply to Russell Martin now too, anything less will be deemed as a massive failure. Howveer I fear we don't have anywhere near the quality of squad now in L1 as we did last time in 2008-09 when we romped to the title!

Martin is definitely not able to command the same wages and jobs that Parker is

Parker will be able to get himself a job at a Championship side aiming for promotion - no chance would he have come here

I would be amazed if we hadn’t given him the job whether Martin would get anything higher than mid-table/bottom half in the Championship

Make your own mind up - perhaps marginally less opposition than for Martin, but still no enthusiasm  (apart from usual optimism of 'give him a chance'). It is interesting looking at initial thoughts and most were spot on.

I think Martin would have ended up abroad somewhere. He wouldn’t get a top championship team and his football isn’t designed for a relegation scrap.  He would have had to take a random job like cooper did

Yeah I certainly wasn't optimistic and it didn't feel like a good fit, but it wasn't as strong a reaction as it's been towards Martin- any last remaining goodwill towards the ownership has long-since eroded too, so that's probably a factor.

Far more favourable than the Martin thread to be fair- 41 likes on the post compared to, erm, zero lol

The Cooper appointment was the worst I've ever felt in my personal or professional life

You have my sympathy. I’m afraid to say you can expect disappointment on a massive scale several times over a personal and professional life. Sorry to be the bearer, and all that.
